Let me preface this with one little statement: I hate packing.
Honestly, I would rather just teleport myself to my destination, buy all new clothes, and wear all of them home Joey style so I wouldn’t have to pack a suitcase.
I don’t know when this all came about either – especially since I used to be a suitcase packin’ loving freak in my younger years (don’tevensayanythingaboutmestillbeingyoungthankyouverymuch). I was “that kid” who packed their suitcase at least two weeks before a big trip. I made lists, I laid out every outfit, I had my suitcase by the door at least a day before we actually went on a trip. My sister, on the other hand, has always been a last minute packer. On our first trip to Mexico when I was 16, I was in bed around 8:00 at night (some things never change) since we were leaving at such an early hour the following day. She, however, started to do laundry at midnight. HER LAUNDRY!!! We were leaving in three hours. That. Just. Makes. Me. Stressed.
Somewhere along the lines, I’ve become a “last minute packer” – well, for me at least. Instead of packing two weeks before a trip, I now pack two days before a trip. And instead of loving it, I loathe it with every fiber of my being. The real reason I started packing today though is because I am staying at my parents’ house tomorrow night to make getting to the airport easier for my mom and me.
Today, I started with a list – one for me, and one for the Husband.
Aaaand after looking at this picture, I realize I am the culprit to the Husband’s learned helplessness when it comes to feeding himself. Honestly, if the man does not have food made for him, he will not eat – and no, I am not joking. One of my activities tomorrow will be to make him some food for lunches and dinner while I am away. #wifeyduties
Aaaand if you’re wondering about the three lines under the orange juice that is written in all uppercase letters, it IS a big deal. As I told my mom the other day, “I would rather the Husband (okay I said his real name) not kill me from not buying his orange juice than him getting a little arsenic in his system every morning”.
The other list for myself was much more… extensive.
Yes, every day is broken down and yes the expected temperature is written next to each day. No, I am not psychotic. I’m also planning on wearing three outfits on Saturday by the looks of it. And apparently I am only wearing leggings on Sunday. Do you think they’ll let me fly home?
The most important part of that list was the food (obviously). Whenever I travel, I always bring my own snacks and breakfast items because 1) it’s cheaper and 2) eating breakfasts away from home is very difficult for me because of all my dietary restrictions. It’s easier to round up some food to bring along with me to make my life easier!
Check out that love – can’t leave home without it!
As for other foods while we’re gone, my mom and I used a service her business partner told us about – Garden Grocers. They deliver groceries to most all Disney resorts, so we decided to stock up on perishable items like salad ingredients, almond milk, fruit, and hummus so we could save some money eating a few meals at the hotel.
Confession time – I am either a chronic over packer or under packer. I am never “just right”. I think this trip I am falling into the “over packer” category.
In my defense, the last time I was in Florida in January, we had 30 degree weather all week and there is a major cold front moving into Orlando right now. What if it really doesn’t leave like the weather man says it will? I’m just being paranoid prepared.
In 24 hours, I will be in Sunny, but less than warm, Florida! Did I mention we’re hitting up Harry Potter World before we even step foot in a Disney park? HARRY POTTER! And no, I did not read alllllll the books – I’m just very excited.
Question: What is your packing strategy?

Are we the same person? I used to the do the EXACT same thing when I was younger!!!!!! No, for reals! I remember going to summer camp, around 15, and being packed at least a week before and being in bed like, well, probably way too early to even mention. And now I hate packing. maybe I used all my packing abilities all before I even reached 20?!?! Have fun in Florida!
ha! We are one in the same!
Hear ya girl! Packing is the worst but unpacking is even more awful. Oh well, all for good reasons right!
Have a safe trip and see you from sunny FL!
Glad I’m not the only one who detests packing…bane of my existence really! Making lists as you have done always keep my stress levels at bay! Apparently “more is less” doesn’t really work for me because I am always overpacking, and praying that I don’t have to pay for excess luggage….better safe than sorry, methinks!
ha! I’ve had to transfer some of my things to another’s suitcase many MANY times!!
Oh my god that shopping service is so cool! I don’t go as far as noting the temperatures when backing but I do have a general idea. I’m the worst packer in the world, I always over pack, never under. If it’s under it’s intentional as there is obviously shopping planned. Got caught out when went to Barcelona as arrived on a festival weekend and all the shops were closed..the whole weekend!!!
I don’t leave home without at least one snack or meal, so when I going away I’m exactly the same. Whatever about the variety in America, Ireland is the worst in the world. It’s hard enough locating stuff in the supermarket and health stores! Have a great trip!
Oh my gosh. Were you stuck wearing the same thing all weekend? That would be bad! haha!
Not quite but I did have to wear the two outfits I had with me a couple of times and there was no dressing up in the evenings! Flip flops to the restaurant…luckily enough it they were having a late heatwave back in late September so I didn’t look all that out of place!
I am definitely a ‘two weeks before’ packer—I just get so excited!
Make sure you don’t forget the chocolate
I always over pack! Mike teases me about it too!
Yay for Florida and for the disney race!
I would like for you to overpack, have to transfer things to my suitcase, and me get to keep all your clothes because they rock. Yup, that’s what’s going to happen.
haha! Love you! We can do that ; )
Wow you are organized for someone who hates packing! Just a question: Why do you right R instead of T for thursdays?
Because T=Tuesday! I don’t know where I learned the R trick from.
Harry Potter is way cooler than anything I’ve ever seen at Disney, honestly. Go right when it opens and race straight to the Hogwarts ride! We did it that way and got to ride it twice in a row without waiting!
Well we’re getting there around lunchtime since we’re going after we arrive around 10 tomorrow. But I’ll be sure to go there first!
I literally could have wrote this post. When i was younger i LOVED to pack. Now.. i put it off to the very last minute, and always over pack.
The expected temperature written down next to each day and outfit?!?
The OCD girl inside of me just fell in love with you.
I literally LOL’ed reading this!
I am the exact same way! I used to pack weeks in advance as a kid-I think I just loved going places, that’s why I enjoyed packing. Now, life is so hectic with working full time, that packing is usually a last minute thing. Before we left for our honeymoon, we were at Target at 8pm getting sunscreen, and started packing at 10pm that night-for a 5am flight. I was stressed, tired, and overwhelmed-never again!
I rely heavily on lists for everything-you should see my grocery list-it is embarrassing since there is a list for each store.
Well, with the honeymoon I’m sure you were thinking about other things - THE WEDDING!
you don’t even want to know about my packing strategy! three day trips to new york yield five huge samsonite suitcases. 4 for me. 1 for the puggle. ridiculous! your list is Adorable! can’t wait to view photos of the race running outfit! travel with cheer!
x
I am an over packer to the max- using up part of the husband’s case for a few of my things. I like to think I don’t go overboard but if I’m being honest, I do. You are ontop of things, I bet it will be ‘just right’ this time! …… Have a wonderful time!!!
I have had to use the Husband’s suitcase many times as well.
We are leaving for Florida tomorrow too. I am running the full on Sunday and I’ll be cheering on my friends running the 5K and half marathon. My 5 year old is packed and I should be by noon! I was always much more of a planner but given that I’ve worked the last 11 out of 12 nights I knew this would be a rush at the last minute. I figure there’s got to be a Target somewhere in Orlando.
Good luck and have a wonderful trip.
Awesome! Cheer for me - ha!
I definitely will if I spot you
haha I brought tons of food with me to NC too, I’ve eaten more granola, apples and home made trail mix than I ever wanted. Apparently all food in the south is either carbs or processed (with soy). Winning. And you haven’t read all the Harry Potter books!?!?!?!?? I’ve read them all. Several times, each. Several.
I totally believe you - haha! I haven’t even seen the last movie, and my mom told me what happens the other day. I was shocked!!!
You’re going to have such a good time! I happen to enjoy packing, which is odd. It’s the unpacking that I dread and put off for waaaay too long. Have fun in Disney! (How could you not!?!?)
hahah I actually love packing for different things! I make to-do lists all the time
I have the same kind of packing lists! And then I always end up adding way too many extra things — you know, just in case the weather is different than what I expected, or I don’t feel like wearing what I packed, or…
Good luck with your race!
Thanks, Lauren!
I didn’t read HP either but the ride is one of my favorites at the park…even though butter beer tastes like butt!!!
Everyone keeps telling me how awesome that ride is - I can’t wait!!
When I pack, I break it down by each day as well. And sometimes I have it broken down like, Monday morning/afternoon outfit and Monday evening outfit. Like I really change outfits twice on a normal day? So as you can imagine - I’m an extreme overpacker.
HAVE FUN IN FLORIDA! Oh, and have fun with that half marathon thing, too
You should run 13 miles on Saturday too - you know, so you can knock out thirteen of your 1006…
I used to be just like this, completely meticulous with my packing with lists that were pretty much a novel. I think all the traveling I’ve done for work though has tamed me because now I’m the night before packer that does it from memory. It’s so bizarre because in every other aspect of my life I’m super organized in planned. Hope you have great weather and don’t forget anything!
I hate unpacking way more. I am still unpacking and I got back on the 30th. blech.
i’m a total list maker too… for everything. my life is compiled of lists, i swear. i feel lost without them. ha. as for packing, i am terrible at it. you’d think i’d be a pro after packing every single week of my life to go back and forth between my mom’s and dad’s houses growing up, but nope, i either underpack or overpack like you. good luck!
Oh goodness, going back and foth every week - I would have lived off of lists too!
I make IDENTICAL lists when I travel and am also a serious overpacker…I guess overpackers are the ones who need lists the most! And amen to bringing your own food- I never regret doing that.
Now I feel WAY under prepared! I am also leaving tomorrow at 5pm and have yet to make a list, look at the forecast, etc. (thanks for the weather info at least
!!) I will be lucky if everything is packed between the hours of 3-4pm tomorrow after I rush home early from work - lol!! But at least my laundry is done - well… most of it anyways…
You’re going to Disney too!? Are you running the half?
Yes, and YES!!! I am so excited as well! Have fun!
1. I hate packing too! So many details and I always fear forgetting something.
2. Youre going to do awesome.
3. I really really wish I was running with you!
I wish I were running with you too! We need to schedule a chat soon.
Good job getting the packing done! I actually love packing cause it gets me excited for the trip. I always forget stuff anyways though! Once I went camping and forgot my pillow. It was not fun. Anyways, have an amazing trip!
My strategy is shove everything I might possibly see myself wearing into the suitcase, then shove the overflow into the boyfriends suitcase. Then get the head shake from the boyfriend for over packing. Happens every time!
Good strategy. I should try it sometime.
im same way with makin my lists my fam thinks im crazy! and harry potter world?!?! sooo jealous! have so much fun
Awww, I totally don’t mind packing, but I’m a little “Monica” about the things I do…organized, clean and gett’er done! I find enjoyment in piecing my case together…in 9 days I’ll be doing the same to Miami
I write lists dayyyyys before to make sure I remember everything and Make and Bake food for about 1 day before - the morning of. Always bring plastic utensils
Have a blast! xxoo
Do you give yourself “checks” when you do something good?
I SO want to go to Harry Potter! You’re so lucky!
I booked my trip home (to the Cayman Islands) in March and this is the point where I sit back and am grateful I keep a bunch of my clothes back home so I don’t have to bring everything sunny. I never have enough clothes up here when summer comes because most of them are in Cayman, but hey, it stops me overpacking. Because I am a total overpacker!
Have fun!
I’m so jealous that the Cayman Islands is your home!
YOU WILL LOVE HARRY POTTER WORLD.
My packing strategy is to be totally neurotic, make a list, try everything on, and roll it up as tightly as possible
Weee! I’m so excited.
Haha I love that episode of Friends! No matter how many times I’ve seen it, that show always cracks me up.
You are SO organized when it comes to packing! I tend to just fill my suitcase with clothes until it can barely zip up anymore and hope that it’ll be enough to get me through my trip. That strategy almost always results in me wayyyy overpacking though.
Have an awesome trip!
im a mix of last minute packer and overpacker…in other words, im an overpacker bc i leave things to the last minute. annoying for my husband i think. haha. you are gonna have a blast!!
I definitely read all the HP books multiple times, I’m so jealous!! I hate packing. Every weekend I pack to visit the boyfriend and I end up shoving everything into my big pink bag (I call it my Barney bag), and I bring far more than necessary for two days. Way. Too. Stressful.
I agree I wish I didn’t ever have to pack! I am terrible at it! You will do great in your race! Best of luck!
Disney Parks ROCK!!!
Go on the Tower of Terror for me
Strategy is for about 2 weeks prior to a trip, random things like spare chapstick and a bottle of stevia drops and the charger for my this or that electronics…stuff that I would ordinarily forget, I throw it into a bag in my closet and then when the trip comes I have all those loose ends tied up and can concentrate on just the major stuff, clothes, toiletries, etc.
Have fun!
my comment just went into moderation…and I didn’t even say anything that good
Oh my gosh, I LOVE your list! I can never pack correctly for any trip…even just a one nighter. It’s always too much or too little. An exact list-day by day, like yours-could possibly be the cure for this!
Oh, HAVE FUN IN FLORIDA!
I used to love packing, making lists, having everything organized, etc. Now I have to pack myself, husband and 3 kids…ugh. Hate it!
I actually really like packing. I just think about how much fun I’ll have on my trip the whole time. Plus since I don’t have much clothing it takes all of the decision making out of it. I just pack practically everything I own and I’m good. I actually can’t start packing too early though, because I can’t just walk around naked for a week. lol
I literally have NO packing strategy. I wait until about an hour before departure to throw everything into a bag. Typically I end up forgetting underwear, socks or both!
Good luck in your race. I love how you pre-packed a lot of food. I need to do that more often. For sure.
You are very busy!! …… : o …..
It’s never any fun getting our stuff together when we are no longer teenagers. The excitement wears off. To a teen ….. a 25-er is old! Ha.
Well, I never make lists. Not for packing up things anyway. Get the suitcase(s) on the bed/ottoman …. then go for it. In the old days, I would put pants, shorts, etc. into one sc. Tops, sweaters, jackets into another. Not to forget ….. there is nothing more helpful than clear Hefty zip bags for undies, etc. Use all sizes too. Keep socks separate. Makes things easy for yourself. Always travel w/extras. But then, you knew that already Chelsey!
Cannot imagine all those moms that must pack everything for their families. I’d go nuts. A whole lotta concentration!
My cousin is moving back to USA next week from London! She/they have been living in another world for almost 4 years. How they are doing it all ….. bringing it all back …… who knows? A big headache.
Have fun in Florida Chelsey. A cold spell was predicted this mornin. It should be brief. Bring a few warm pieces of clothing. Socks too. Just in case.
Hahah I love how you use “R” for Thursday! It reminds of scheduling classes for college
Ha! You and John sound like me and Shane as far as food goes. It’s like unless I put it on a plate in front of him, he just won’t eat! Orrrr he’ll grab chips for a meal or if he’s out maybe Taco Bell. /handpalm
Having grown up in Florida, I think you are very smart to over pack! You never know what the weather is going to do and of course there is always the possibility of a thunder storm (that wasn’t in the forecast and of course you don’t have an umbrella.) Of course, 30 minutes later the sun is shining again but you still need a change of clothes because you are soaking wet! Good luck on your race!
I am SUCH a list person like you when it comes to packing—and everything else in my life!
You’re brilliant, although you might want a top to go with those leggings
How nice to have the option of having groceries dropped off at your hotel - and even better that you can pick how green or yellow you want your bananas!
Do you mind me asking what you usually pack for food:) I can not have gluten as well and was wondering what worked for you.
Thx
Heather
Oh, packing. I’m not friends with that, ha. But when it comes to a getaway or a race… especially a race, I won’t bring anything I haven’t used during training. I’ll bring my broken in sneakers, and this includes favorite fuel too. For clothing, I try and keep it simple. I’ll pack bottoms that I can put with any top, but I want to feel stylish. Sometimes it’s having that nice handbag that pulls it all together.
Urgh, i have always been a last minute packer. I just hate it and try to put if off for as long as possible. My worst habit is that whenever I travel in a car, I tend to just grab a pile of whatever clothes happen to be there and chuck them on the back seat!
