just a couple of muggles

January 5, 2012

The first day of Florida was a success!

I’m usually a fairly nervous traveler (remember what happened with my friend’s wedding?), but that’s because I always feel like I have to “be in charge” when I travel alone or with the Husband. However, with my mom, I kind of feel like a little kid, so I didn’t have too much nervous energy going into today’s traveling. I didn’t get much sleep on Tuesday night, but what I got was pretty restful!

We were up bright and early at 3:00 in the morning so we could be at the airport at 4:30. We both planned ahead and packed a quick breakfast to eat once we were waiting to board the plane. I packed cinnamon raisin bread (which was kind of blah because I guess it was freezer burnt) with peanut butter, banana slices, and chia seeds. On the side, I had my other half of banana.

I also was lucky enough to get some coffee from a shop that brews Starbuck’s coffee and had soy milk. Hallelujah.

Once we got to Olando, the first thing we noticed was that it was COLD! Apparently a cold front came through a few days ago, and the temperatures are slowly creeping back up – not fast enough.

My mom and I had plans to go to Universal Studios today with one thing in mind – Harry Potter World!

We arrived around lunch time, and to say we were starving is an understatement. We had eaten breakfast around 5:30, so by the time 12:30 came around, we were ravenous. We quickly found some food before we even headed into the park, so we were limited on our choices for something fast and fresh. We found a Moe’s Southwest Grill, which is no Chipotle, but it did the trick and kept our stomachs from growling any longer.

I had a burrito bowl with rice, black beans, tofu (so surprised to see this on the menu!), grilled vegetables, a variety of veggies, and guacamole. It was meh.

We quickly headed over to Island of Adventures so we could be with the other zillion people who were in HP World this afternoon. Seriously.

Upon first glance, Harry Potter World is without a doubt the greatest thing I have ever seen. And upon further glance, it is just that. Honestly – how freaking cool is this park? I went on a roller coaster by myself first thing, and I always forget that my stomach doesn’t like roller coasters as much as I remember liking them when I was a teenager. Yikes, it makes me feel old.

After, my mom and I looked around and found some pretty great finds – pumpkin juice!

We even waited twenty minutes just to get into a store to see the merchandise – these people were crazy!

And unfortunately, we soon became the crazies when we waited in line for two hours to go on one of the rides – Harry Potter and the Forbidden Journey. The two hours felt like four hours to be perfectly honest with you. It did not go quickly, and we really felt like the line was never going to end. However, I have to say it was worth the wait. It ended up being a really fun ride, and we had a lot of fun. Unfortunately, we both felt a little queasy after it – we are such wimps.

We ventured over to the other side of Universal Studios to visit the original park for a few hours before we both felt our energy levels waning. By 7:00, we were both ready for dinner and to sit for a few hours. We ended up going to Hard Rock Cafe in hopes of finding something that we could both eat on a gluten free diet. We ended up with THE WORLD’S BEST SERVER! Sam is also gluten free, so she knew exactly what we could and couldn’t have and made our experience amazing. My mom and I both ordered the same meal, and we loved it.

We started with house salads and drizzled them with olive oil and vinegar.

For the main meal, we both ordered the grilled vegetable sandwich on a gluten free bun with a side of gluten free fries (!!!) on the side. Typically when we go out to restaurants, I never order French fries because 1) fryers are usually contaminated with gluten ingredients and 2) I don’t like to make a habit of ordering fries because they aren’t the healthiest.

These could have been the best fries I have ever eaten – maybe I was just really hungry?

Whatever the case was, my mom and I were back in our room by 9:00 watching Modern Family and relaxing with some late night snacks. Time to hit up the Disney parks today!

PS – I’ll try not to make future posts this incredibly long.

Glad you made it to Florida safe, well both of you!

How fun your mom is with you too! Universal is awesome! I love it there! The Harry potter world looks cool, I have not been to that! The Simpsons ride though, so cool! If you go again, you have to go on it!

Woo glad you are having a great time! I’m shocked you found such great options at Hard Rock- all sounds yummy! I have this image of Hard Rock cafe only serving up greasy grub! Perhaps carbo-loading will happen in the form of gluten-free fries? #doit!

It was pretty decent too - usually tofu that’s not organic/sprouted will give me a stomachache, but I was fine!

This looks like so much fun! It makes me want to go to Disney with my mom! We both love it, but can never seem to rope anyone else in to wanting to go there for our vacations. I got my husband to agree to have our honeymoon there, so he probably won’t be making any trips back with me in the next few years!

Erica @ For the Sake of Cake January 5, 2012 at 9:53 am

Well… neither of us are beach people so they idea of going to a beachy place for a week was out, but we still wanted to make sure there was stuff to do. It poured for a good portion of our trip, & when it wasn’t pouring it was 94* & 100% humidity, so I’m sure he was cursing me as I was dragging him from ride to ride! haha Poor guy!

Reply

we couldn’t figure out what butterbeer tasted like (since we figured neither of us could drink it without getting major stomachaches) and someone said “butterscotch and sugar cookies” - but other ppl have said it tastes gross!

I adored every part of Harry Potter world - I agree that the Forbidden Journey ride can be a little motion-sickness-inducing, but the dragon coaster was pretty intense too!

Those are the two rides I went on, and I felt so icky the time the day was over - nothing a good night’s sleep and some dinner couldn’t fix!

Did you do the Cat & The Hat ride? Yes, it’s a little kid ride, but way more nauseating! Between the spinning and the colors we barely made it through!

I got out of Florida the day before that cold front hit (although going to Canada is always way colder than a cold front in Florida lol). I told my husband that the next time we go to Florida, I must go to Universal Studios. We always hit up Disney, but I’ve never been to Universal and I’m dying to see everything Harry Potter. Glad you got to enjoy it!!!

DO make these posts that long - I really want to read more! I love HP and am so excited to see your pictures of the park. You have to try the butterbeer soon (if it’s gluten-free and vegan, which— I hope so!) Love that you’re “just a couple of muggles” - we can’t all be Harry, unfortunately, but at least we can enjoy his world ;) .

I LOVE Harry Potter World. I went last year when I ran the Disney Half Marathon, and it was more amazing than I ever dreamed it could be. Did you go inside the Great Hall dining area?? I must say my favorite part of HPW was definitely just walking around…that 3D ride made me sooo nauseous. I had to close my eyes and plug my ears the whole time, and even then I didn’t feel great afterwards!

What a fun trip! I get sooo nervous dining out. I have gotten burned by gluten one too many times. But with a server who is gluten-free, I would feel much more comfortable.

And I totally know what you mean about having to be “in charge” on vacations now. On the one hand, I love it because I don’t have to do anything I don’t want to. But on the other hand, I realize I actually have to plan everything!

The best fries ever, eh? I haven’t actually eaten at Disney in ages but everyone raves about the food and people who are GF say that Disney does a really awesome job at keeping things truly GF and for not cross contaminating, either.

I love rides like roller coasters. Not a wimp with those. But spinning rides like the tilt o whirl…no, cannot handle those!

Your trip to Harry Potter World looks fun (never been,) but I am even more envious of your mother-daughter trip. As much as I love traveling with my husband, we have very different styles - he prefers to sleep in, relax and not over-schedule our days, whereas I prefer to get up early and see everything on my list. My mom, sister and I went to Italy last spring (it was the first time we’ve ever traveled just us girls) and had the best time. We were so in sync and all wanted to do the exact same things - I will remember it forever. Enjoy!!
