Is there anything better than a good night with a great friend, good food, and amazing conversation? I’m going to go with no.
After work today, I met up with Lauren so we could do a little retail therapy and go out to dinner (our favorite pastime). Lauren needed a few new outfits for some of her new jobs, so we hit up Woodfield Mall in Schaumburg. I never typically go that that mall, so it was fun to walk around there for a while. Although as I was telling Lauren, it is incredibly easy to get lost in there. You can see a store, you can have a plan as to how you’re going to get there, and instead you end up on a completely different floor than you were going to. It’s a maze.
After we shopped for a while, we joined the senior citizens for an early dinner. Lauren suggested we go to Big Bowl, a restaurant I had never heard of before. Big Bowl is a Lettuce Entertain You restaurant and has an Asian theme – most dishes are either Thai or Chinese. Big Bowl is different from the rest – they are committed to buying local ingredients and naturally raised meat. I can tell you one thing – you can tell the quality of their ingredients is superb. The food speaks for itself.
Upon arriving, I asked the hostesses if I could have a gluten free menu. I was pleasantly surprised there were a handful of vegetarian gluten free options (doesn’t happen too often), and Lauren and I quickly agreed on an appetizer.
We ordered the Summer Spring Rolls, which were filled with fresh vegetables, wrapped in rice paper, and served with a spicy chili sauce on the side. Both of us agreed that this sauce made the appetizer. It had a bite, but wasn’t so spicy it left our mouths burning. This appetizer was gone quite quickly.
For my main dish, I ordered the Vegetable with Tofu Pad Thai.
Don’t be deceived by this picture. After sharing some with Lauren and putting a major dent in it myself, I still have about half left for some much anticipated leftovers. This dish was wonderful. It was a rice noodle base willed with tofu, egg, beans and coated with a light peanut sauce. Apparently I wanted some heat tonight though because I coated this dish with the chili sauce our server brought to the table.
Just looking at that picture makes me want to eat my leftovers for breakfast.
Big Bowl is definitely a place I would love to go to again. The service was great, the food was wonderful, and it would appease so many different palates. Great choice, Lauren!
After dinner, my date and I decided it would be an awesome idea to go get frozen yogurt in 20 degree weather.
sidenote – when I got home, I swore to myself that I left my cashmere scarf at Red Mango. After I frantically texted Lauren, I discovered I had hung it up in the closet five seconds before the freak out. ::sigh:: I need more sleep.
We could literally see the Red Mango sign from our table at Big Bowl, so we headed over there shortly after our food digested. We’re both sampling queens, so after we carefully decided on what flavors to get, we made our desserts.

Red Velvet and Vanilla frozen yogurt with a plethora of toppings – including (but not limited to): pomegranate arils, strawberries, coconut, chocolate chips, strawberry fruit bursts, mochi, and a lone peanut butter cup.
This definitely hit the spot.
After, we parted ways, but not after setting another date! I am loving having this girl so close to me. I am definitely going to enjoy this time she is here to the fullest.

I can’t wait to go back - it’s delicious!!
You can’t ever beat a good fro yo date!!!
Never!!!
It sounds like you had an absolutely terrific evening filled with great food. That restaurant sounds amazing. I always have great appreciation for restaurants that have several vegetarian and/or vegan options. And the fact that they had gluten-free options for you is great. You can’t beat that!
Red velvet frozen yogurt? Um…sign me up!!
YUM! That all looks delicious. Sounds like a perfect night to me
Big Bowl is my favorite restaurant from when I lived in Chicago/traveled there for business. It’s relatively inexpensive and the food is very high-quality and delicious! Also a fun atmosphere. Glad you guys enjoyed!
I loved how inexpensive it is - especially for the portions they give you. They’re huge!
That pad thai and frozen yogurt look drool worthy! Pad thai is by far my fave Thai dish!
I think my favourite thing to do my my girlfriends is meet up for a long, lazy brunch!
I really can’t tell you how blessed I feel to have you here and now so close in my life. This was just so meant to be. On a totally separate note I was thinking, maybe we should start a weekly date where we get together, dressed in full fleece PJ’s, curled up n a big comfy couch, catching up on The Bachelor episodes. Of course, it might have to start at 4pm in order for us crazies to make it through but no matter.
Can’t wait to see you again soon!
Um that sounds pretty much perfect. I’d be there in a heartbeat if I could.
There’s definitely nothing better than good food, good friends, and good conversation… especially when you throw froyo and shopping into the mix.
Amen sister.
Ah, what a fun blogger meeting! Especially when you become such close friends. Awesome. I totally wish there were more bloggers where I live, I don’t think there are any actually. That place sounds fantastic to top it off! Yum, impressed also by their gluten free and vegetarian options! That doesn’t happen to frequently!
You ladies are gorgeous! It can’t get much better than food + friends!
Whenever I see photos of you two together, I get slightly jealous.
Wish I could be there!!
This all looks so yummy!
Shopping and eating out
Though I love going for a nice hike! The food looks amazing!
Big Bowl’s Pad Thai is one of my favorite dishes-but I haven’t had it in years. I really need to get back there! I love trying new restaurants in new places with friends. It’s a little adventure!
Agreed!
Anything with friends, spending time with friends is so special. A lot of my close friends live far away and I cherish every conversation we have!
Dinner and fro yo is pretty much one of my ideal nights with friends!
That fro yo looks good! Even in 20 degree weather! My favorite things to do with friends are go for runs and walks, go to dinner and dessert, or just hang out and talk!
Shopping and dinner dates (especially ones that end in froyo) are definitely some of my favourite ways to spend time with friends. Nights with movies and a bottle of wine are pretty high on the list too!
pomegranate arils on fro-yo?!! yum!!
So true - I wish pomegranates weren’t such a pain to get those arils out!!
I love pad thai!
My favorite thing to do is a girls night in! Four of my friends and I had a sleepover over Labor Day weekend and it was seriously the best thing I’ve done in years, haha. We watched movies, had girl talk, snacks, painted our nails, etc. Loved it!
I never wear cold-weather hats because I feel like they look awful on me…hers looks super cute!
I really like Lauren’s hat
A sleepover? That sounds so much fun!
What a fun night! Date nights out to dinner with a girlfriend really is one of the best things ever! Next to wearing sweats, getting comfy on the couch watching romcoms with a glass of wine in hand
mm I love pad thai and fro yo! I like shopping, eating and walking with friends!
You were in my neck of the woods!
I totally agree, Woodfield Mall is like a maze (and parking is a pain) and I almost never go there. My boyfriend and I frequently go to that Red Mango though. Delish! I’m craving some Big Bowl now too!
Those spring rolls look so yummy, and so easy to recreate! I need to attempt that at some point!
I agree - it would be easy. Although that chili sauce I would need to just buy in bulk!
Red velvet yogurt?! YUM!
My friends and I have monthly wine nights! Nothing better <3
That sounds like THE BEST.
Those summer spring rolls look amazing!
Oh yummmmmmy. I always get like 6 flavors & 10 toppings. How I roll.
With friends-usually dinner, games, manicures, fro yo or just plain old girl talk.
Nothing wrong with 6 flavors!!
so much yummy going on here. love it
Looks like the ideal friend date! Whenever my friends from college visit from out of town we do something similar, shopping + sushi + froyo + night out at the bar. It never gets old!
Oh my, now I am totally craving rice noodles - that dish looks sooo good! Sounds like you had a great time!
Favorite activity with friends … going out to eat or coffee and just chatting.
Going for a walk or run is always great, too!
Finding a place with gluten-free options is like finding the perfect top in my size. Finding a place with multiple gluten-free AND vegetarian options? Well…you’ve just found Bigfoot.
I need to get on this fro-yo train. There are no comparable places near me!
