fitting in fitness

December 17, 2014

Fitness and I had a little bit of a tiff this fall. Over the summer, I really enjoyed working out. The girls and I went on a 3 mile walk most days, and when they were taking their morning naps, I would pop in a video to complete (most days). Once I went back to work in August, that fitness routine obviously took a nose dive. Long gone was the time during the day to fit in fitness while the girls were napping!

For a few weeks, I got up in the morning to head to the gym. That meant before I went to work, I would be getting up around 4:00 AM some mornings to get in a good workout. Over the fall, however, we went through a major sleep regression with Emerson. Whether it was due to teething or not, this mama was tired and couldn’t fathom getting up at such an early hour.

This led to a few months of not working out for a few weeks, maybe doing one workout every few weeks in the morning, to not working out at all again. I was pretty hard on myself during this time because I had finally built up my endurance again and was feeling stronger.

It took me a few months to realize my attitude needed to change.

So what if it’s cold outside and I can’t take the girls for daily walks anymore?

So what if I can’t get my butt out of bed at 4:00 AM?

That was really no excuse. Finally a few weeks ago, I resolved that when possible, I would work out when the girls went to bed. I say when possible, because some days I just need to plop my behind down and relax after those two wild children head to bed. 😉

Whether that meant popping in a video or going to the gym, I was going to make it happen. I had to make it a priority again, and I had to make it fit into my life right now… not my life in a few months.

I’m finally back in the groove. Right now, I’ve been taking about 25-30 minutes a few nights each week and am fitting in fitness. I realize a lot of you might be in the same boat as me. My (non-trainer, non-medically trained) advice is to make fitness accessible in your home. There are so many workouts available out there ready to go at your fingertips if you are willing! I have a laptop, a few workout videos, workouts pinned, a resistance band, and a set of 5 as well as 10 pound dumbbell weights.

Right now I am enjoying switching my workouts up. Because I am only working out for 25-30 minutes a day, the workouts I complete need to pack a punch - cardio as well as strength training all rolled into one!

Here are a few links to some home workouts I love (or have been wanting to try!)

I hope if you’ve been in a rut this has inspired you to get back on the fitness bandwagon. I know I could use all the help I can get to get my butt moving! 😉
