scenes from a blizzard weekend

There is now $3,025 in the pot for my DietBet challenge! You can sign up by clicking HERE. The challenge doesn’t start until tomorrow, so you still have time to sign up. If you’re interested but not sure how it works, read my post here first on all the details. I’m hoping it will be a 4 weeks full of motivation, community building, and making healthy choices regardless of where we are all at in our health journey!

Well, that little winter storm I mentioned yesterday turned into a full on blizzard by the afternoon. We’re sitting in about 12-15 inches of snow right now (some places even more!). Go big or go home, Chicago! But before we get to that, let’s back up and talk about the weekend!

Saturday

Ugh, I was in a baaaaaaaad mood on Saturday morning. The girls had a rough night – Brooklyn was up at 11:30, Emerson was up at 2:30, and Brooklyn was up for the day at 4:30 AM. With the added bonus of a snoring husband, I was a force to be reckoned with come morning. Thankfully after some coffee and an attitude adjustment, I was able to go on with my day just fine. ;) On Friday night, I learned that my father in law would be coming over during the day to fix our ceiling in the master bedroom, so I planned to run some errands with the girls in the morning so we could be out of his way.

photo 1 (47) girls’ tunics are from Old Navy – we just got them, and I am OBSESSED!

After some Saturday morning #selfies, we headed out the door around 9:00 to go to Costco. We’re transitioning into one nap most days, but sometimes the girls still need a little something in the morning, especially when they are early mornings (::ahem:: Brooklyn) so I was counting on them sleeping for a little while in the car. They fell asleep almost instantly, so once we got to Costco, I hung out in the parking lot and listened to The Girl on the Train for an extra half hour or so.

After Costco, we went to Berkot’s – a local grocery story – for some other weekly staples before we got home in time for lunch. Grandpa was still working away on the ceiling. Unfortunately, it was taking him a lot longer than he thought it would – but we didn’t mind! We loved having his company all day – especially Brooklyn. She’s a grandpa’s girl!

Once John got home, he jumped into help his dad get all cleaned/packed up. I tried to entertain the girls, but they were both not happy about the fact that Grandpa AND Daddy were in a room and they couldn’t go in. It was a crazy hour or so trying to keep them happy!

After dinner, we played with the girls for a bit (they love to roughhouse with their daddy), and after they went to bed we took it easy. With the snow storm coming, John knew he would be up in the middle of the night to start working, so we watched a few episodes of Criminal Minds on Netflix before calling it a night. Okay, in reality, I watched one episode, and I fell asleep on the couch at 8:30. #truth

Sunday

Sunday started at a much more reasonable hour – 6 AM! ;) John must have slipped out quietly, or I was dead to the world because I didn’t even hear him get up, get ready, and start his truck whenever he left. We had a pretty lazy day to be perfectly honest with you.

The girls napped while I washed floors.

We played and looked out the windows a lot at the snow coming down.

We played and played and played some more.

I did some food prep – including some hard boiled eggs, almond butter, and a batch of turkey chili.

I took and submitted my pictures for my DietBet challenge that starts on Tuesday!

The girls took a tubby and splashed the entire tub of water out onto the bathroom floor.

You know, the usual.

Going out for the Superbowl wasn’t even an option. With the snow and the wind, the roads were horrible – plus, babies have to sleep. :)

As I’m typing this, I just got the call for a snow day! It’s probably for the best as my car is absolutely buried in snow. Plus, I have no shovel here as the Husband has all of them. Whoops!

All in all, it was a great weekend! Hope yours was too!

Yikes, that’s a lot of snow! My mom lives just south of Chicago and they seem to have gotten more in the 8-10 realm. Seems like she must have lucked out. Enjoy the snow day! :)

The official snowfall total at O’Hare was 19 inches! This storm was weird - some places got 10 inches, some got 18! We got around 14-15 I think. I still ahve to do an official measure this morning. ;)

We’re dealing with the same blizzard. The city is pretty much under shut down! Hope you’re staying warm today!

Thanks - you too! I did not think we would get a snow day, but the streets still are barely plowed. Today people have to dig themselves out! ;)

Enjoy your snow day!!! My brother always says it’s hard to take off of work if daycare isn’t open, but he LOVES the days he can spend with my niece. Although it’s less money, it’s such a great time to get an extra day to spend with her. :) I’m sure you understand it, too!!!

I know - John and I were talking my last snow days about how if I weren’t a teacher, snow days could get a little hectic when the girls are school aged!

LOL! At first they told us only 3-5 inches… then 5-8… then 8-12… then 12+. Yikes!

Just out of curiosity, how are the girls doing with your dog? We have an 18 mo old little boy and he has just started trying to terrorize our dog. We are constantly redirecting him, but boy is it a battle!

They love Charlie! They don’t terrorize him - thank goodness! They will go in for an occasional kiss or hug. A lot of times I do redirect them though because I want them to understand that Charlie needs his space. He has never shown any sort of aggression towards them, but I want them to understand that dogs in general shouldn’t be bothered all the time.

Oh, but B DOES love to go by him when he’s eating because she knows she’s not supposed to. I constantly have to bring her away from him when he’s chowing down!

So much snow!! Your chili looks really good! Our friends had a “Souper Bowl” chili cook-off party last night. There was a really good, unique chili with pumpkin!

Yum! I’ve made chili with pumpkin before - it makes it so creamy and hearty!

Are snow days just as fun when you’re a teacher as they were when you were in school?!

Reply

cleaneatingchelsey February 2, 2015 at 9:53 am

I’m pretty sure they’re better. ;)

I’ve been known to jump on the bed to wake up John because I’m so excited. HA!

That’s quite the downfall of snow. Glad school was cancelled. No need to go out if the roads are no good. Now you get to have a fun day with your two cuties!

p.s. snoring husbands can be the worse. Haha!

Agreed - I was pretty surprised when schools started calling off, but there’s no way that anyone could have safely made it in today. Everyone is digging themselves out!

We are getting hit with snow right now! Another snow day and more time with my babes! Madeline and Ethan LOVE those blocks that are pictured above. Once of their favorite toys!!

Awesome! Is it the same storm that we got hit with?? Enjoy your snow day!

Yes, those blocks have been a favorite since they were 12 months - and now we’re getting into puzzles. It is so cool seeing them match the puzzle pieces to the pictures!

We got hit hard, too! I let Abbey out this morning and had to wade through thigh-high drifts! Poor Abbey, she’s only about a foot high to begin with… it was interesting for her to do her business!

My dad lives just outside of Chicago and he was texting me every 10 minutes about all the craziness of the snow! Is it worse than that blizzard we got in 2011? That was crazy, I think I was off school for like 2-3 days! I’m pretty happy over here in England with the tiny amount of snow we got in the last couple of days ;) Enjoy your snow day!!

Haha that’s so funny that you hung out in the Costco parking lot and listened to your book! But I guess you gotta take the peace and quiet when you can get it. ;) I’m sure I would do the same thing!

LOL - it seems just normal to me, I guess. You gotta do what you gotta do for sleeping babies!

You guys got so much snow! I hope it clears up soon for you! My husband always steals my snow scraper so I am usually left out with nothing to clean my car off with! You had a busy, yet productive weekend with your two sweethearts! I love the matching shirts!

Reply

cleaneatingchelsey February 3, 2015 at 3:12 pm

Oh no!! I stole my mom’s scraper for a few weeks because I couldn’t find mine. I’m pretty sure she almost killed me the first time it snowed and she was without it. Ha!

Wow. You guys got dumped with snow! O_o We have been really really mild this year in Colorado. That chili looks yum! :)
