I’m still trying to figure out just why people come and read my blog. It’s been a hard long journey, but I’ve come up with a few reasons. I’ve come to see the light (pun intended when you keep reading).
1. You like to laugh at my life
2. You like granola
3. You like oatmeal
4. You’re just a really nice person and can’t leave me now that you know what you’ve gotten yourself into.
It’s okay – the Husband is guilty of the latter. It’s a cryin’ shame too because he’s stuck with me for the next 60 or 70 years (perhaps even more if science is on our side).
I’m guessing you all don’t come to my blog for my ridiculously beautiful photos. If you did, I’m sorry. You should probably go here, here, or here if you want to see some pretty pictures.
I can promise you I have been working on my photography skills. For the majority of my life, I have always wanted to get into photography. Other factors have gotten in my way, but I have been spent the last few months trying to figure out my new camera (Rebel EOS). I could have gotten further in my experimentation too, but apparently the sun liked going down at 5 PM for the last 4 months.
That kind of cramped my style.
Last week, Ashley gave her readers homework to “play around with light”. I, of course, in natural “Chelsey” style was a little late to the game. The teacher would turn her homework in late, right?
So, here’s the set up:
Please don’t laugh at my subpar paint skills. Those blue squiggly lines are supposed to be arrows. Yeah – I know.
Basically I took photos in 4-5 locations which are numbered in red on the chart. I took some pictures with a light bounce (a white sheet) and many without to see if it made a difference.
Meet Exhibit A – an orange.
All of the following photos are without a light bounce.
Position 1:
Position 2:
Position 4:
Position 5:
For this round, I think my favorite was position 2 and position 5. I can’t believe how different the coloring of the orange is just based on where I was standing while taking the photo.
The next photos of the orange are with a light bounce.
Position 2:
Position 5:
I think there is more of a glare in these pictures, but I think the light looks much better.
Exhibit B – an onion
All of the following are without a light bounce.
Position 1:
Position 2:
Position 4:
Position 5:
I love love love the last picture in position 5. It has everything to do with the angle of the onion, and I love how there are shadows casting behind it. Awesome.
The next photos are with a light bounce and at a bit of a higher angle.
Position 1:
Position 3:
Position 4:
Once again, my favorite is position 5, but I like the one without a light bounce better. I really like the shadows in the one without a light bounce.
With every lesson, it’s important to reflect upon what has been learned.
I learned this: I don’t have it all figured out.
It’s going to take a lot more practice for me to really understand how the light is actually working and why it changes the pictures the way it does.
My next goal is to focus more on angles. What angles work best, which ones don’t work at all, and how light and angling works together to make a good picture.
If you’re a master photographer, feel free to chime in. However, I can without a doubt tell you that I don’t learn unless I experience. So jibber-jabbering facts at me won’t work because I won’t understand it.
Teachers always make the most horrible students.
Question: Which one of the photos above did you like the best? Did my Paint abilities blow you away? Have you ever tried any “light” experiments?

I agree with you, I think position 5 looks best. What a fun experiment!
I tried using a light bounce for the first time today. I definitely don’t have it figured out yet. I have a lot more to learn.
I like all of the position 5 photos.
I haven’t tried any special light tricks with my photos…
my husband is the photo guy…sometimes I just get him to take the pics for me. That, and he probably gets nervous when I touch his camera
Great shots, Chelsey! Assignments like this are fun because you can actually see the difference each adjustment makes.
I like position 2 with the light bounce for the orange. I like 3 and 4 with the light bounce, too. I do like pos. 5 with the light bounce, which you mentioned you preferred the one without. The one without it is a little blown out on the left side of the onion, which is the first thing my eye goes to. Were you allowed to change your settings for this “assignment,” or did you have to keep everything (shutter speed, aperture, WB, ISO) the same to really see what the effects of the light were? I think just letting a stop more light in for the one with the light bounce would make the onion pop even more; or trying the one without the light bounce stopped down one.
The best thing about photography is that you’re never done learning. There is always so much to experiment and play with depending on what you’re trying to accomplish. This can be frustrating but at the same time, it keeps it interesting! Who wants to decide they’ve learned all there is to learn about any one thing after just tinkering with it for a year, anyway?!
I knew you would be proud of me! I totally see what you mean about that picture being washed out on the left hand side. I agree that changing the f-stop would make that better, but I wanted to keep my settings the same for all photos. Wee I’m having fun!
Position #5 in all were my favorite, except the onion #4 was nice too. Was that the same exact position as the orange #4? Lighting is so amazing. I shot most of the time by my large kitchen window, I also have a mini studio setup with a softbox, but I don’t like the colors of my pictures when I use it.
PS: I read you because you’re funny, all of your posts give a good read, and you have inspiring ideas!
I did Ashley’s homework and she put it on her post today about it. I was honored to have my lettuce pics on her blog
I like orange in pos. #1 or #5
What a fun post! I will have to try these out too! I am still trying to figure out the whole photography thing. I like the last one of the onion!
Girl, you are like 1000 steps ahead of me! You seem to be doing quite well with your photos! Good job with the shadowing
(aaaand that’s all I can say b.c. I don’t know many terms dealing with photography…)
haha!
That made me laugh!
Thanks!
You’re such a good student doing your homework.
I wish I had more time to spend on my photography skills but I just don’t right now. I get inspired by great food pictures, though!
My favorite is 5 as well , but I like 4 too!
Oh girl, your paint abilities blew me away like the WIND. Slash I need a canon rebel, it would make my life. Your pictures are gorg, I especially like the onion ones!
what a great experiment- thanks for the lesson
Right now I don’t even have a camera. This is a pretty sad/embarrassing fact for a blogger. My camera (which was not too fancy to begin with) decided that it did not want to turn on anymore, so I’ve been using my camera phone…and I have an ENV2. I’m sure I’ll look back at laugh at this one day when I have a career, and money to buy a camera. As for now, it’s something I can live with
. I like photo #5 of the onion without the light bounce!
ohhh, I’m impressed. Love the lighting! And you are too cute, too funny, and I love your GF recipes. thats why I read!
XXOO
Oooh this looks fun
I love your blog no matter what light you play with haha! I still think your pictures are beautiful - especially the ones of your face
Happy Thursday!
I love this post! I JUST got a new camera from my guy tonight as an anniversary present and I’m nervous with a big, new, professional toy! Your pics definitely helped! Thanks, teach!
I just got a new camera this week too!! It’s sooooo overwhelming! But I have been playing around a ton too. Perfect lighting is hard to find! Especially since I haven’t been home when there’s daylight in a while. It’s so nice to know I’m not alone in this goal of learning to use a professional camera, and that there’s help in the blog world!
If you want some tips, I highly advise you to head over to Ashley’s page - she has been doing tutorials in a series called photography 101.
I have no photography skills, I kinda just wing it.
haha, wicked great paint skills! Maybe only I can surpass that ; )
I just take a crap ton of photos from all kinds of angles and lighting and hope at least one or two look decent. So far, so good.
How’s that for scientific?
You are the scientist, no doubt about it!
I definitely need help in the photography area. I just might try some experiments like you did. It was cool to see the different angles and how much it changes the look!
I read your blog because you are AWESOME and you are absolutely hilarious. Your writing style is so much fun to read.
Way to go with the photography experimentation. I’ve been working at better photography too… but it’s definitely still a work in progress. Sometimes I’m just too lazy and I want to eat the dang food!
I love reading your blog for your recipes and your taste tests.
I have a basic Canon point and shoot but I’ve learned to really use the natural light instead of my awful kitchen light. I don’t nearly have the fancy camera that you do, but someday….
Very impressive! Love your blog-and your photography must be great because I’m usually hungry after I read your posts.
Photography is a whole new world to me as a new blogger-fun but there’s a lot more to it than I thought! I hate how my dinners always look worse than my breakfasts because of poor lighting. Although…maybe my breakfast pics just look better b/c that’s my favorite meal?
Who knows….
I love taking pictures from different angles, in different lights, etc.
IT is so fun!
I’m adoring the #5′s too!
xoxo
Kathleen
The first part of your post made me LOL. I doubt people will keep coming just to be nice…time is precious and people don’t spend it constantly on pity! You must have some unique attractive power.
I like position 2 for the orange, and position 5 for the onion.
oo i like 1 on the orange and 5 on the onion! very very nice chelsey! i am TERRIBLE with photos— i just dont have the patience to get a photo of my food.. i wnt to EAT IT
Learning about photography lighting is challenging and invigorating at the same time. I’m been giving it a lot of study as of late, but I still have a long way to go! I am lighting-challenged. It’s a process.
I like onion #5 the best.
I know I come to your blog because I love you and you ALWAYS make me laugh!
The photos look great! You would definitely get an A on this assignment.
Thanks Lauren!
Photography confuses the crap out of me too! And it doesn’t help that I’m still stuck using a point and shoot.
It’s interesting to see the effect that different positions have on the picture. I like number 5 best too!
All 4 of the above reasons describe why I love your blog so much! And the fact that you’re just gorgeous and an amazing blogpost writer:) Hope you’ll check out my blog sometime too:)
Of course I will!
The photos look great! I’m still trying to figure out my new camera and working on my photos as well. You are several steps ahead of me, so this really helped. I need to try a light bounce set up.
I know I come to read your blog because you’re hilarious, you have good insight into things, and I feel like we share similar personalities. Keep it up!
Orange 2 and onion 5 are my fav! And I come to your blog because you’re funny and from reading your posts, I feel like I’ve known you for years!!
Have a great day!
wow, your paint skills are amazing!! (lol, a lot better than mine!)
Loving the different angles! I’m not much of a photography pro, I just snap away at my food, choosing whichever photo/s looks the best to me - they’re probably rubbish to any ‘real’ photographer! Yours are great though
Ha ha I love those “arrows.” That picture of the onion is my favorite too and I like all the light bounce-less pictures better than the ones with the light bounce. Is that weird?
You’re such a rebel.
I don’t know boo about photography, so can’t chime in.
I’ll have to go with you on the onion 5, no light bounce.
I would wax poetic about why yours is one of my favorite blogs, but I’m afraid I would scare you…lol.
I think u did an awesome job! Ur a great photographer!!
Chelsey, I am with you. I am trying to take better pics for my blog, and right now I have a higher-end point-and-shoot (Canon SX 130 IS). It actually takes some pretty great pictures, but it’s night and day when it comes to low light vs. natural light shots. The natural light really adds something special to the photo- makes it clearer, sharper, and all around much more appetizing looking (since 90% of my shots are of food! lol)
Because of the stark difference in photo quality, when I do have access to natural light (basically only on weekends since I have a 9-6 job) I will literally carry the dish I want to shoot over to the one spot in my apartment that does get a lot of natural light. Of course its about as far from the kitchen as you can get in my (admittedly very small) apartment. But it’s worth it!!
All that said… I can’t wait until daylight savings time this weekend! hopefully I’ll have at least an hour from when I get home from work to whip something up and take some good shots come summer time.
I’ve been waiting for Daylight Savings for MONTHS!!!
I still haven’t found the light lol My house has such weird lighting which is why I always take my pic in the same place
I’d take it outside but my family would think I was crazy lol
i read your blog because YOU ARE SO AWESOME duhhh!!! plus i like oatmeal baha. i love you. i hope you have an amazing weekend!
And you are awesome - I miss you!!
I have alot to learn about taking good photographs! Maybe I will have to try out some different lighting experiments instead of just taking the photo without thinking much about it.
I want to improve my photography skills, too, but I think I’m just to lazy to make a light bounce (that and it’s tough in an apartment with only one major window). I definitely like photo 5 of the onion without the light bounce; I think the shadows give it character.
