“more is better” apple chips

September 22, 2011

A few weeks ago when the Husband went to Michigan with his cousin, I requested that he bring me home some fruit – specifically peaches and apples.

September 21, 2011 015
And those three apples are about 1/20th of the amount of apples he brought home. I kid you not. I love my Husband, even in his “more is always better” mentality. I’m not sure where he got it from, but I’m sure I could figure it out if I went into his father’s tool shop and confiscated 25 of his screwdrivers (I <3 you, Dave.). Even though this isn’t really my mentality, this usually works out in my favor – he’ll stock up on dish soap or toilet paper when it’s on sale. He’ll hit up estate sales to buy tools that he doesn’t necessarily need. And he never gets mad when I buy the same shirt in five different colors.

September 21, 2011 020
When does this not work out in my favor? When he brings home 60 apples and plops them on the counter. Um.. sixty apples is a lot. What am I supposed to do with 60 apples? Can one even freeze apples? (Answer: yes.)

I do love apples though – coming from a girl who eats at least one a day (sometimes two), I couldn’t stand to complain about my plethora of apples on my kitchen counter.

September 21, 2011 023

So, I thought to myself: what can I do with all of these apples? And I thought: I cant make apple chips!

And then I thought… well, that takes care of four apples.

“More is Better” Apple Chips

Difficulty: Easy
Prep Time: 15-20 minutes
Cook Time: 10-12 hours
Serves: 4-6 snack sized portions

  • 4 medium sized apples, any variety
  • cinnamon

Directions: Begin by cutting your apple into eighths with an apple corer or with a sharp knife. Using a sharp knife, carefully slice each apple eighth into 6-7 slices, making them about 1/8 inch thick. Toss your apple slices in a large bowl with cinnamon and spread single layers onto dehydrator sheets. Turn your dehydrator onto 135 degrees Fahrenheit and dehydrate for 10-12 hours, depending on the consistency you are looking for. I like mine crunchy!

**If you do not have a dehydrator, set your oven to its lowest setting and cook until crisp.**

I’ve got apples coming out of my ears over here, folks. Why can’t these apples be new shoes?

Question: Do you have a “more is better” or a “less is more” mentality?

Ohhh yum, I don’t have a dehydrator, but I could try this in the oven!

I don’t have a more is better mentality, but my mom does! If I ask her to bring me one of something, she brings me two… always… without fail!

The more I read your posts…the more I realize I need to invest in a dehydrator.

I have very little patience for coreing/chopping apples, but these look so good. I love the prepackaged kind, but they almost always have added oils. Wish I had a dehydrator!

It wasn’t too bad! Only took me about 10 minutes!

I never even thought to make my own apple chips! I am adding this to my list of “apple” to do’s” I am going back to PA to visit family in a week and I plan on bringing back as many apples as will fit in my suitcase… I can’t wait to see the look on the guy at the xray scanners face when I come through with my bounty.

My mom probably has the “more is better” mentality, but I think I’ve grown to be a bit of a “minimalist.” I will accumulate a lot of stuff, but then it doesn’t end up getting used. The common stuff I use though, I tend to not stock up on either, but I think if I were smart though, I would, with watching sales and finding coupons!

Oooh, great idea for extra apples!! We used to do the same thing when we lived in Indiana- we’d go apple-picking, and come home with about 40 apples. They’re just so good!!!

Indiana and Michigan both have such great fruit farms!

Oh. My. Gosh. I LOVE apple chips! I have never made them at home. I totally need to get a dehydrator! Any recommendations?!

I might give it a go in my oven today and see what happens!

I am totally a “more is better” type of gal. I am Southern, thus I think it is mandatory to be this way. Have you seen Paula Deen?! More butter, more love, more dessert. Word.

I have an Excalibur dehydrator and I love it! Granted I’ve never used anything else, but it’s a great product!

We’re going apple picking this weekend, this is a great idea to get rid of a handful of them! I might give it a try in the oven (no dehydrator here).

I love, love, love dehydrated fruits! Apples and bananas are two of my favorites. I didn’t even think about doing them in the oven (I don’t have a dehydrater)…I’ll have to try it!

Reply

cleaneatingchelsey September 22, 2011 at 11:42 am

It would - I haven’t done it, but if you put your oven on the lowest setting and cook them until they’re crispy (I’m thinking maybe a few hours?) it would probably be about the same.

Since I live alone I usually go with less is more. If I run out o can always stop into a store but I hate seeing things go bad because I can’t finish it, or I’ll over-eat trying to finish it! No good.

Anna @ The Guiltless Life September 22, 2011 at 10:46 am

Well, I’m living with my mom right now and we’re moving this weekend. I am a less is more and she is a more is less (with some things, not everything to be fair). But as we move I am trying desperately to DE-CLUTTER and it’s like fighting a losing battle, honestly. You get a bit tired of arguing over EVERY book that hasn’t been read in 5 years (oh but so and so gave it to me OR you never throw out books)! Anyhoo, these apple chips look delicioso and will hopefully save me from any moving meltdowns :) .

Katy September 22, 2011 at 11:57 am

We love apples here too! I haven’t tried apple chips (but am now dusting off our dehydrator) but love to make homemade apple sauce, chutney, and speaking of dehydrator, have you tried making “fruit roll ups”? Just use the hole-less liner on one of the trays, pour in your apple sauce and in a few hours you have wonderful fruit roll ups! My kids love them!

glad to know i’m not the only one who likes to over do it when it comes to apple consumption…

Kaitlyn@TheTieDyeFiles September 22, 2011 at 12:08 pm

I’m definitely a less is more kind of girl. I feel like it’s better for the environment, better for my wallet, generally better for all involved. Though I don’t mind that my roommate bought an industrial sized pack of toilet paper in May from BJ’s, meaning we have yet to buy TP since. I’d be willing to splurge on 4-6 apples to make these! Perhaps I’ll confiscate the boyfriend’s dehydrator.

Reply

cleaneatingchelsey September 22, 2011 at 3:13 pm

Oh if my boyfriend had a dehydrator, it would permanently be mine! :)

That’s so cool that you can freeze apples! I never knew that. And I don’t have a dehydrator, but using the oven method is sounding pretty good because those look mighty tasty :D

I like the more is better with a lot of things… Chocolate stocked in the house, fruit, hours of sleep… But not things like dishes, dog poop to pick up or laundry. Those last 3 should be outlawed.

Love apple chips!!!

I love apple chips! Every time I go to the bulk food store I buy some… but I can never keep them around very long. They’re usually gone by the next day! :P

I have a less is more mentality. I hate having too much “stuff”. Unless that stuff is clothes of course. ;)

I love apple chips! I put them on salads all the time.
I can’t wait until my area gets good honeycrisps, not sure if they are in season yet. Last time I bought apples they were sort of mushy still.

I must be weird, but I do not love the texture of dried apples. Maybe if I did it long enough to be crispy - but alas, I don’t have a dehydrator… And I’m sure the hubby would be convinced that I were burning down the house if I did it in the oven.
