what attracts readers?

September 22, 2011

Oh, I’m going there today.

A frequent question I get from readers who are starting out blogging or have been blogging a while but would like their blog to grow is: How can I attract more readers to my blog?

While I am not an expert, I have definitely seen my blog steadily grow over the course of the last year or so. And while I also don’t have all the answers, I would like to share what helped me and what I did to increase my readership. Over the course of the last year, I have shifted my thinking of CEC from “just a hobby” to a part time job. This has really helped me to keep my focus, create a professional appearance (I hope.), and learn from successful bloggers.

1. Don’t focus on the numbers. Seems weird, right? But just don’t do it. While I would be lying if I didn’t get a little giddy some days when looking at my blog stats, it doesn’t tell the full story. What were those posts about? Were they quality pieces or was I just “blogging to blog”? I feel like if you focus on the numbers, others will start to notice. Once numbers are involved, blogging with passion will decrease dramatically.

2. Quality over Quantity. There are some days where I just don’t feel like posting twice a day, or even at all in a day. When that happens, I have two options: don’t post or schedule a guest post. If I were to post when I really wasn’t “feeling it”, chances are you would notice really quickly. Gabriela and Tina both recently did posts on their “blogging mojo”, and both are a really great read.

3. Get involved. And now I sound like my mother when I went off to college. In all seriousness though, getting involved in the blogging community really helps. I am involved in a number of different communities that help me stay involved and get CEC some more exposure. Some communities I am involved in are:
- Foodbuzz
- Wellsphere
- Fit Blogger
- Foodgawker
- Teaching Street
- Love Grown “Love Blogger”

4. Guest Post. I have gotten a lot of my readers through guest posting on other blogger’s sites. Obviously you should discuss guest posting with a blogger you already have a relationship with instead of e-mailing someone you do not really “know” though. Create a guest post swap for the two of you to complete at the same time!

5. Utilize Social Media. Social media is HUGE, and I really did not realize this until this year. I cannot tell you how many people come to my blog because of a tweet I sent out or because of a link I shared on Facebook. With that being said, if you don’t have a Twitter account, get one. If you have been toying with the idea of getting a Facebook page for your blog, do it (and use it, unlike me for about 4 months! #guiltyascharged). Social media has helped me to create relationships with other brands, with other bloggers, and with all of my readers!

6. Focus on the relationships. Blogging is no fun without my readers! I love interacting with everyone in the comments section and on Facebook and Twitter – it’s probably my favorite part about blogging! I have also focused on making long lasting friendships with other bloggers – it makes blogging that much more worthwhile!

7. Slow and steady wins the race. Give yourself time. You can’t expect your blog to grow 1000% overnight! It took me a a lot of time and hard work to get to where I want to be!

Are these the only things you can do to try and get your readership to grow? Absolutely not! They are, however, what helped me the most during my blog’s “growth spurt”.

Question: What have you found attracts people to read certain blogs?

I write a book blog, which is a little different from your area, but I think I really saw my traffic increase when I started commenting on other sites (don’t be shy) and taking part in some of the less-cheesier memes. And I definitely agree about quality! Once in awhile a “writing about writers block” post is okay, but not if it’s once a week!

Great post, Chelsey.

I think that if the writer is authentic…that can be serious, deep, funny, one-liners, but if what words come out of their mouth & onto the page and that feels authentic to the reader, that’s huge.

Another thing…photography. I do not frequent blogs anymore with tiny, hard to make out pictures. There are so many blogs to read; I focus on ones that inspire me personally and for me, that includes having nice pics. They don’t have to be “amazing” pics of course, just not tiny squares, dark lighting, or food that looks like brown mush every time I go there :)

Great set of tips!

Thank you for this! So well timed for me. Feels like you’re reading my mind! I started my blog in July and am loving life as a part-time blogger. I admit to getting frustrated though, because I’m wishing it would just grow more quickly. So thanks for the reminder to keep it focused and be patient.

Your honesty and ‘real’ personality come across and that is why I read your blog without fail. You make it worth the readers time to read what you’re saying! …. I love that about you, CEC! :)

Some people read blogs they think are popular. However the thing that keeps me as a reader coming back is connection through twitter and other group/media.

Great tips. I think people are attracted to a blog that gives them something useful-whatever it may be they are looking for. For busy moms that’s going to be quick recipes, for people with allergies that might be GF recipes, for others it may be design inspiration. Bottom line, most successful blogs provide some type of “service” to their readers in a specific niche.

Is it weird to say I’ve been waiting for you to write this post for so long? Not that I would know much about gaining readers, but I do know what brings me back to others’ blogs and that being genuine. Take the fact that I read your blog religiously as you will :)

I always love posts like this! I am still very new to blogging (And finally consistent with my posts!!) so I’m trying to learn as much as I can! I’m a little nervous that my school is going to become overwhelming soon and I’ll have to cut back, but c’est la vie! Blogging isn’t something that I want to give up any time soon!

Great post Chelsey! I was wondering about how you became more involved in those communities. I tried to join Foodbuzz but people that have “.wordpress.com” in their URL are not allowed to do that.

Being mentioned on CEC always ensures a good stats day! Relationships with other bloggers and companies is huge. If you’re blogging and forming relationships isn’t a priority for you (and you want to have actual readers) that’s just silly. Oh, and I don’t check my stats daily. Maybe once a week? That’s me not focusing on numbers. I know people like funny and motivational posts from me. So when I deliver those, I know it’ll be a “good” day ;)

Hi Chelsey! Great post. I was just wondering what plug in you use to get the stats for your blog? Ever since I moved to self-hosted, I haven’t used one. I was so used to checking it every single day and now I kind of forgot about it. The only thing I read about was Jet Pack but it wouldn’t let me install it for some reason! Any help would be awesome :)

clean eating chelsey September 22, 2011 at 9:30 pm

I use jet pack but I didn’t do the installation myself so I can’t really be of any help! Anyone else?

I love that you and Tina posted about this the same day! Seriously, I love it - I could read this stuff forever :)

For me, on my blog, I notice the posts (recipes) that get the most buzz are the ones that get picked up from external websites (e.g., Foodgawker, Pinterest)… just goes to show how helpful those places can be!

cleaneatingchelsey September 23, 2011 at 5:55 am

I love to read blogs where I feel like I’d be friends with the blogger in real life. Then, whether they are talking about their family, workouts, friends, interests, I feel like I’m having a conversation with a friend. :)

Great post! I have been debating when I should switch over to a self-domain. I have only been blogging for about a month or so but I know the .wordpress.com isn’t really a great name that people would want to visit. When do you think is a good time?

Reply

Rita @ Fitblogger September 23, 2011 at 11:27 pm

So true Chelsey and not just because Fitblogger’s up there ;) People can’t find you if you’re not “around” and being vocal. It all feels very lonely in the beginning but the community is amazing if you start to be less of a wall flower and start dancing!

Another tip I’d have is letting go of any insecurities you might have about telling people you know that you have a blog. At first, it might be a little embarrassing (some people just don’t get the whole “blog” thing!) but if you tell a few people, then they might share it with others, and it will go from there!
