Sometimes, your life doesn’t go as planned. Okay, all the time your life doesn’t go as planned. If you even tell me yours does, please tell me your magical secret or be ready to accept the fact that we won’t be friends anymore. Sometimes, situations just drive me bananas. You may not have used that phrase since you were in the 5th grade – however, I have an excuse because I’m around 5th graders all day. Therefore, I am allowed to use the same vernacular as them.
Just so we can say we played, let’s just imagine (totally hypothetically of course) that the snow that was said to hit Chicago last night didn’t hit until rush hour this morning. Thus ruining any chances of my much fantasized snow day.
Just for kicks, perhaps the woman who usually works at the gym wasn’t there this morning. No, I don’t have a crush on her – she just gets there at 4:30 instead of 5:00 when they’re really supposed to open. Loss of 30 minutes of a workout? BANANAS!!!!
You might even figure out during the day that you secretly have “jealous parent syndrome” or as I like to call it, JPS (okay, I’ve never called it that before – let’s hope it sticks). Pretend your child sits at the door and waits, cries, and whines when your significant other leaves. However, you know for a fact said child does not do the same for you when you leave. You would only know this because you secretly peered in through a window after you left for work. Not that I would know or anything….
You’re right – that drove me bananas.
Not to mention my dirty rug… let’s not talk about that.
Luckily for me, whenever something drives me bananas, the only thing it really does for me is get the word “bananas” stuck in my head. Thankfully, I have the perfect cure for such a situations.
Perfect Grilled Bananas
- 1 banana (ripe = caramelized sugars)
- cooking spray
- cinnamon
Begin by picking the biggest and ripest bananas of the bunch. Unfortunately for me, this day was kind of on the less ripened side. However, you want a riper banana so the sugars caramelize together and make an ooey gooey (technical term) mess.
You only need half of a banana – unless you like a whole (who am I to tell you how to eat your bananas?). Slice the banana in half length-wise.
Spray a small skillet with cooking spray and heat to medium. Do not heat your skillet too high as no one likes scorched bananas. Sprinkle cinnamon on the inside slices of the bananas and lay facedown in the skillet. Heat for two-three minutes and flip. Before you flip though, be sure to sprinkle cinnamon on the other side as well. Heat for an additional 2-3 minutes.
What you end up with is a sweet and delicious grilled banana that will make you forget your world’s troubles.
I think I might start feeding Charlie these bananas until he realizes he loves me more. Because let’s face it – not being able to control any said situation drives. me. bananas.
Question: Is there anything that drives you bananas? OR Have you ever tried grilled bananas?

Sorry your snow day didn’t work out. I’m hoping for one tomorrow…. hopefully the snow keeps up overnight
And I just recently started to make grilled bananas & I love them. I usually use them as a topping for French toast. yummm
When the roomies leave their things lying around for me to clean up….totally drives me bananas! Love grilled bananas. Since you are a big fan you must try Banana’s Foster! Superb Louisiana Dessert!!
Oh my goodness, YES, the very same snow that chose to come at RUSH hour is what drove me bananas today!! Why, why, why?? What a mess… and I don’t know about you, but I just drove home from work, and the streets around me still aren’t clear. This is Chicago, people — we’re supposed to be GOOD at snow!
Oops, sorry for the rant… but you did ask what was driving us bananas!
No problem – I was sad all morning when I looked out my window and saw the snow becoming bigger and bigger.. all I wanted to do was be at home.
Grilled bananas are amazing! And yes I also have issues with unequal puppy parent love – so not fair!
I secretly think he sucks up to the Husband more because he knows I’m a softie and will love him no matter what he does.
I had kind of a bananas day today too…I think I need to go to bed, NOW!
I have yet to try grilled bananas–but they look fantastic!!! I think they would be awesome on top of oatmeal!
Grilled bananas sounds amazing!!!! Yes, certain things do drive me bananas…mostly when I mess things up or someone else messes up my plans
I see you put grilled bananas on your oatmeal and I always tell myself to try it but then I forget! Boooo I have to put a sticky note on my forehead so I remember!
That looks soooo good!!! I love grilled bananas.
What kind of oatmeal did you make.
YES! I hate when my mom asks me 9887564576345876 questions everyday! It drives me bananas. A whole stash of bananas.
Also when people chew with there mouth open. gah.
I love grilled bananas!
So yummy!!!
Yayy for grilled bananas! And I laughed out loud about the dog thing… I’m sure he loves you both equally!!
“Sometimes, your life doesn’t go as planned. Okay, all the time your life doesn’t go as planned. “—
And once you have kids, this is 1000x fold increased!
And chicago traffic/rush hour + snow = horrid. Lived in that scene for years. Ugh. didnt know you lived in chicago!
the grilled bananas NICE!. I make bananas JUST like that, i sprinkle w/ cinn & sugar and nuke for 30 secs. I need to bust out the pan, dont i. To get the full on sear/carmelization. Thx for the tutorial!
Whoa! I am now on board for trying this simple, yet delicious-looking, banana idea.
As soon as I saw these, I ran from my computer and made them as dessert. I topped my bananas with PB and granola. Super yum! Also, I gave you “The Stylish Blogger Award”. I recently found your blog and now I come to it every day!
Thanks Melissa!
I have actually never tried to make grilled bananas. It has been added to my “to-make” list.
It’s unfortunate, but lots of things drives me bananas… The biggest thing that can throw me from the banana tree is when people don’t follow directions! FRUSTRATING!
Story. Of. My. Life.
I’ve never grilled bananas-perfect idea!
I wish I hadn’t just used my last banana today. That sounds delicious!! My lack of motivation to be productive today drives me BANANAS!
meh – snow day!
Loosing precious gym time would definitely bum me out! Making grilled bananas is officially on my to-do list!
I tagged you with an award!

You are too funny!!
A big snow storm prediction and then getting none seriously drives me bananas! And the hope of a snow day and then nothing is awful!!
Grilled bananas=delish!!
you work out at 4:30 in the morning!?! What time do you go to bed at night?!
9:30!
Things that drive me bananas:
-Having someone at work email me a project, only to change the entire direction of the project hours after I start working on it…
-When I pick up everything except the one thing I was really craving from the grocery store
-Forgetting my sandals for the gym shower
-When the sweaty woman on the bike next to me at Spin Class sings quietly under her breath to every song that is played
-When I call someone on their cell just seconds after I missed them, and they refuse to pick up!
Grrrr!!!! Now I need to go eat a banana to chill out
Hahaha do you have any idea how much I LOVE reading your posts?! Seriously. (Even though I now have that Gwen Stefani song in my head. hahahaha) But things that drive me bananas: forgetting to put a banana in the freezer so I can make banana soft serve in the morning! For real, that’s a sad thing when I open the freezer and realize I forgot
I’m TOTALLY trying the grilled banana thing though!
Rush hour snowfall was ridiculous. I creeped the whole way to work. Creeeeeped.
Luckily for me, I left a little bit earlier so it wasn’t too too bad.
Lots of things drive me bananas. Mostly people, but you’re not one of them. Let’s just leave it at that. I need more grilled bananas in my life. Maybe tomorrow??
I think that would be an excellent idea!
I just made sauteed bananas for dessert tonight, but I have never tried grilled. They look great, though, so I know what I’m doing with my last banana tomorrow. Thanks!
Mmm! Grilled fruit is delish. It brings out the flavors so much and it creates a totally different taste! I love grilled bananas
b.a.n.a.n.a.s!! Ha – I love your post…our snow here in MD was LAME!! im going to try melted bananas tomorrow…but maybe grilled bananas will be on my to do list for the day after
Perhaps you will still get more?
I don’t think 5th graders use the word vernacular. Just sayin.
I posted this summer about grilled plantains. On a real grill and everything. I never thought to do it on the stove. I bet broiled bananas would be even better.
I say “that’s bananas” all the time. Or things “drive me bonkers”. I don’t teach 5th grade, so I don’t even have an excuse.
No but they totally say “bananas” – no excuse necessary.
this looks delicious!! i have a banana obsession so i need to try this. and yes, you are totally right – we are wimps in south carolina. at least i grew up in massachusetts and used to know how to deal with snow. now i suck. haha
I just realized how long it’s been since I’ve eaten a banana. That’s problematic.
This looks absolutely delicious though!
Also, forget if I’ve introduced myself, but I’ve been reading your blog for a couple weeks now and am slooowly starting to comment on things
Looking forward to reading more!
Welcome Nicole! So glad you’re speaking up!
grilled bananas taste like heaven! Oh the things that drive me bananas to many to name. The one that takes the cake though is myself!
That is TOTALLY me!
I still have yet to grill a banana! I really need to jump on that bandwagon!
I can’t believe I haven’t tried grilled bananas yet! Definitely soon.
It drives me bananas when my roommates eat my food!
Ahhhh! I used to hate that! Although I’m pretty sure I have done it before too!
I’m singing Hollaback Girl in my head right now.
You know what drives me bananas? Lateness. Not once or twice, but when the same person is ALWAYS 15 minutes late. CLEARLY IT TAKES YOU LONGER THAN YOU THINK TO GET YOUR BUTT OUT THE DOOR, SO LEAVE SOONER! Sorry. I’m really, really impatient about that.
Okay, Gabriela. I must tell you to NOT marry someone like this. It causes many many arguments. Not that I would know or anything…
Being snowed in for the THIRD day in a row drives me bananas!
i LOVE grilled bananas.. why i love best though is how versatile naners are… you can make soft serve, grill them, mash and microwave them or eat them plain and they are all so different!
It drives me bananas that our dog follows the hubs around and could care less about me at all. Even though I am the one who feeds and pets him! BANANAS!
Girl, I feel your pain!
Being late for anything. My parents were both notorious for making us late to school events, and now I can’t stand to even be 5 minutes late to a movie. It’s ridiculous.
Grilled bananas with pb and waffles are my favorite weekend breakfast!
I totally have JPS (I’m going to help you make it stick). Our pup generally treats me like I’m his consolation prize. The ‘best’ is when we’re cuddling on the couch but the second my husband comes in the room his head pops up, his eyes follow him around the room and within about seven seconds he’s jumped up and run to hubby. Not exactly feeling the puppy love. But we love them no matter of course
Grilled bananas?? Where do I signed up!
I think we (Chicago) got enough snow for you to play around in now!)
BUMMER ABOUT NO SNOW DAY!!! Crazy that you get to the gym that early….too bad we can’t meet up at the gym and motivate me to get there at 4:30 a.m.!!! Charlie is the cutest thing in the world. I want him now. Those banana’s made me drool….I have always wondered how you make them so beautifully:) My stupid blister is driving me bananas ha! Hope you are having a great day!
You DO get up early! You’re there at 5!!!
mmmm grilled bananas!! Those sound so good.
If it makes you feel better, my dog walks me to the door in the morning when she thinks its time for me to leave. Every. Morning. Its like she’s telling me “ok, you can go now”. Im never sure how to take it.
That would make me sad.
The thing that is driving me bananas right now is that I’m out of bananas! I’m going to have to change that soon as I’m now craving grilled bananas. Mmmm… food love. Thanks for the reminder!
That. Is. No. Good.
Hi Chelsea! I just found your blog and love it! I absolutely love bananas and have it in my oatmeal daily, but I’ve never tried a grilled banana. I am doing this for sure this weekend!
And I’m sure it also drives you bananas when people misspell your name! Sorry about that Chelsey!
Oh my god I loved this post! My sister has “jealous sibling syndrome”. When I leave the house my pup whines and cries and scratches at the door, and I sadly know that he doesn’t react that way when she leaves… Guess I’m the favorite! O:)
I found your blog awhile ago, but recently re-stumbled upon it and I’m so glad I did. I really enjoy reading it
I get really riled up by people dawdling on busy sidewalks. Like, really riled up! I need to work on that haha.
I need to try grilled bananas – those look great! Pancakes coming right up
You must be impatient like me!
Those look good!
Them bananas, that is.
Oh, and I say Bananas an it may or not be my penchant for watching Rachael Zoe Project (past your bedtime probably and not really worth your time)
So no — you are not 5th grade you are trendy!
My dog knows enough to love me best
Although when I get home, she’s just like “Eh, whatever” and when my husband gets home it’s like the second coming of Jesus or something. I’m pretty it’s because he feeds her when she gets home
This post was so well written, I love how you worked your theme into every part!
Those bananas look amazing! I recently got a veggie wrap with plantains in it and it was the best thing ever, and since then I’ve been thinking about how to recreate it. These grilled bananas would be a great swap for fried plantains!
And driving me bananas right now is the grocery store only had green bananas when I shopped on Sunday…they’ve been hanging on my banana tree all week and still aren’t ripe!!
I have never heard of grilling bananas till this moment, feel like this may be a life changer
These sound so delicious! Topped with some nut butter=a delicious dessert!
