bananas

January 11, 2011

Sometimes, your life doesn’t go as planned. Okay, all the time your life doesn’t go as planned. If you even tell me yours does, please tell me your magical secret or be ready to accept the fact that we won’t be friends anymore. Sometimes, situations just drive me bananas. You may not have used that phrase since you were in the 5th grade – however, I have an excuse because I’m around 5th graders all day. Therefore, I am allowed to use the same vernacular as them.

Just so we can say we played, let’s just imagine (totally hypothetically of course) that the snow that was said to hit Chicago last night didn’t hit until rush hour this morning. Thus ruining any chances of my much fantasized snow day.

January 8, 2011 023
That drove me bananas.

Just for kicks, perhaps the woman who usually works at the gym wasn’t there this morning. No, I don’t have a crush on her – she just gets there at 4:30 instead of 5:00 when they’re really supposed to open. Loss of 30 minutes of a workout? BANANAS!!!!

You might even figure out during the day that you secretly have “jealous parent syndrome” or as I like to call it, JPS (okay, I’ve never called it that before – let’s hope it sticks). Pretend your child sits at the door and waits, cries, and whines when your significant other leaves. However, you know for a fact said child does not do the same for you when you leave. You would only know this because you secretly peered in through a window after you left for work. Not that I would know or anything….

You’re right – that drove me bananas.

Not to mention my dirty rug… let’s not talk about that.

Luckily for me, whenever something drives me bananas, the only thing it really does for me is get the word “bananas” stuck in my head. Thankfully, I have the perfect cure for such a situations.

Perfect Grilled Bananas

  • 1 banana (ripe = caramelized sugars)
  • cooking spray
  • cinnamon

Begin by picking the biggest and ripest bananas of the bunch. Unfortunately for me, this day was kind of on the less ripened side. However, you want a riper banana so the sugars caramelize together and make an ooey gooey (technical term) mess.

January 11, 2010 002 banana

You only need half of a banana – unless you like a whole (who am I to tell you how to eat your bananas?). Slice the banana in half length-wise.

January 11, 2010 005 banana

Spray a small skillet with cooking spray and heat to medium. Do not heat your skillet too high as no one likes scorched bananas. Sprinkle cinnamon on the inside slices of the bananas and lay facedown in the skillet. Heat for two-three minutes and flip. Before you flip though, be sure to sprinkle cinnamon on the other side as well. Heat for an additional 2-3 minutes.

January 11, 2010 008 banana

What you end up with is a sweet and delicious grilled banana that will make you forget your world’s troubles.

 January 11, 2010 016 banana

I think I might start feeding Charlie these bananas until he realizes he loves me more. Because let’s face it – not being able to control any said situation drives. me. bananas.

Question: Is there anything that drives you bananas? OR Have you ever tried grilled bananas?

Oh my goodness, YES, the very same snow that chose to come at RUSH hour is what drove me bananas today!! Why, why, why?? What a mess… and I don’t know about you, but I just drove home from work, and the streets around me still aren’t clear. This is Chicago, people — we’re supposed to be GOOD at snow!

Oops, sorry for the rant… but you did ask what was driving us bananas! :)

No problem – I was sad all morning when I looked out my window and saw the snow becoming bigger and bigger.. all I wanted to do was be at home.

Things that drive me bananas:
-Having someone at work email me a project, only to change the entire direction of the project hours after I start working on it…
-When I pick up everything except the one thing I was really craving from the grocery store
-Forgetting my sandals for the gym shower
-When the sweaty woman on the bike next to me at Spin Class sings quietly under her breath to every song that is played
-When I call someone on their cell just seconds after I missed them, and they refuse to pick up!

Grrrr!!!! Now I need to go eat a banana to chill out ;)

(Even though I now have that Gwen Stefani song in my head. hahahaha) But things that drive me bananas: forgetting to put a banana in the freezer so I can make banana soft serve in the morning! I don’t think 5th graders use the word vernacular. Just sayin.

I posted this summer about grilled plantains. On a real grill and everything. I never thought to do it on the stove. I bet broiled bananas would be even better.

I say “that’s bananas” all the time. Or things “drive me bonkers”. I don’t teach 5th grade, so I don’t even have an excuse.

Reply

cleaneatingchelsey January 12, 2011 at 5:51 am

I totally have JPS (I’m going to help you make it stick). Our pup generally treats me like I’m his consolation prize. The ‘best’ is when we’re cuddling on the couch but the second my husband comes in the room his head pops up, his eyes follow him around the room and within about seven seconds he’s jumped up and run to hubby. Not exactly feeling the puppy love. But we love them no matter of course
