grocery shopping blues: week 1

January 31, 2011

The Husband and I recently hit a milestone in our marriage. It was big – it was huge. I wasn’t planning on advancing our marriage quite in this manner until we had kids, and I really needed him.

Up until yesterday, we had never gone grocery shopping before. Mainly it was my doing – he likes to use the cart like a two wheel bike, throw sugar-laden products into the cart, and drive me crazy by getting lost within five minutes. Let me just tell you up front that telling your Husband to “be quiet and hold onto the cart” doesn’t work out so well. Not that I would know or anything…

But, believe it or not, we actually had time between church and our family party to go to 4 out of the 5 stores I needed to shop at for our weekly groceries. He had no idea how much actually went into grocery shopping – the coupon cutting, the meal planning, the deal scouting. He actually told me it was “not as easy as he thought it was”. I’m telling you ladies – you want your husband to appreciate you? Take him grocery shopping.

I’m apologizing in advance for the horribly yellow toned pictures I am about to show you. It was late, I was hungry, and well, my walls are green so it happens.

Week One Loot:

January 31, 2011 001

January 31, 2011 002

Half of the groceries:

January 31, 2011 005

Please don’t judge me on letting the Husband buy Captain Crunch. He originally threw Cocoa Crispies into the cart, and I yelled at him. I think my exact words were: “I don’t work this hard to save us money on groceries so you can throw it away on crap like this!” We compromised on Captain Crunch.. if that even is a compromise.

Some more food to last us through the week:

January 31, 2011 007

This afternoon after school I went to the last store on my list, and it was crazy. I am so glad I didn’t wait until today to do the rest of my shopping as everyone seemed to be out today getting last minute items before the blizzard (!!!!!) hits Chicago tomorrow.

Are you ready for the verdict? Did I meet my goal?

January 31, 2011 021

I’ll tell you right off the bat that I did not make my goal. I’ll explain more in just a minute.

Store #1: 14 items at Trader Joe’s for $28.04

January 31, 2011 011

Store #2: 9 items at Jewel Osco for $18.67

January 31, 2011 016

Look at those savings – $15.75!!

Store #3: 4 items at Dominick’s for $8.94

January 31, 2011 013

With a savings of $3.34

Store #4: 7 items at ALDI for $14.99

January 31, 2011 018

Store #5: 2 items at Wal-Mart for $3.35

January 31, 2011 019

With a savings of $0.50.

Week 1 Stats:

Spent: $73.99

Saved:  $19.63

You’re probably wondering how I was able to spend more than $65 when I clearly said in the plan I was only taking $65 with me to the store. I start off the month with hundred dollar bills, so that was not feasible. I also knew I would more than likely spend more the first week. This is a step in the right direction for me though, as I usually tend to spend more towards $100 on the first week because we need so many items.

I also bought some items we only buy once a month or bi-weekly: saltine crackers, a 5 pound bag of potatoes, a 5 pound bag of onions, pasta, ketchup (who are we kidding? – I buy one a week), gluten free flour, eggs, creamer, raisins, and salad dressing. All of these items will last us a few weeks, so I know our grocery bill next week will even out.

I am almost positive next week I will only spend in between $40-50, which would even out the score for my grocery challenge for the month of February.

My plea? Don’t lose hope on me yet. I know I can make it out of the month without spending more than $250.

Are you wondering what the next milestone in our marriage will be? We’re going to get manicures together – you know manly men do that these days. Clear coat only please.

Question: How did I do?

I’m saving all of these posts to keep in mind when I move out. I need to make a budget and stick to it!

You did so well! I asked the husband to go pick up a few items from store #2 for dinner tonight, and he forgot…so, you win. Next time I’ll just take him with me. :-) And for the record, he always throws the generic brand of cocoa puffs into the basket when we go shopping together. All boys are 8 year olds at heart. :-)

:) That made me smile. I know that boys never grow up. It’s a fact of life.

Girl you are supawoman, no one in my family (nor myself) has the patience to go to more than 2 stores for all of our shopping desires. So you basically beasted. Esp with those savings holy shiz girl, yous a coupon queen! Teach me your ways?

You totally crack me up Katelyn. Your comments make me laugh so hard.

Lauren January 31, 2011 at 7:32 pm

Haha, this is so funny because the hubz and I NEVER go grocery shopping together because I’m pretty sure it would end our marriage. :) LoL. But it’s also funny how similar our shopping trips are as well. I come back with tofu and bacon and quinoa and capn’ crunch. It’s such a contradiction but always gives the bagger a good laugh. ;)

I think you did verrrry well :) I can definitely understand the reasoning of having “big spending trips” as well as smaller trips. That’s how I function, too. I mean, I don’t need to buy huge containers of nuts, oats and cereal every week! It looks like you got a lot of great produce, too!

Lauren @ Coachlauren.net January 31, 2011 at 7:38 pm

You did awesome! I agree with Katelyn above I don’t know if I could handle more than 2 grocery stores in one day…
You are my grocery shopping idol (new reality show…? Hm.)

cleaneatingchelsey January 31, 2011 at 7:41 pm

The people in line behind us in Trader Joe’s tried to convince the bagger I should be a consultant for the company. The Husband told them about the blog and they were trying to get a business deal for me – HA!

LOL! You go get your manicures!

I think you did great — and your husband is right, it IS a lot of effort. The amount of planning that goes into saving that kind of money is really unbelievable… until you do it yourself :) Great job, can’t wait to see where the rest of February ends up for you guys!

Yeah, whenever I go shopping with my dad, I feel as though I need to put a leash on him and hold on tight!!! :)

Great job!! Yeah, I find that when I am stocking up on stuff, I spend a little more, and then the next week, I just have to get the things we ran out of. :) It usually balances out. :)

Hehe, enjoy your manicures! :)

Reply

Katie January 31, 2011 at 8:47 pm

I hate shopping with people. I have my system, and don’t like to talk with others; it distracts me. I got to 3-4 stores too, but I never do one big trip like that. I probably spend more, but I can’t handle shelling out over $30 at a time!

You might hate me for saying this, but making your own salad dressing is about 100 times cheaper. Not that dressing is expensive, but the $3 you spent could make you dressing to last months.

Reply

cleaneatingchelsey February 1, 2011 at 5:50 am

I don’t really like shoping with others either – which is why I probably snapped at the cereal situation. Whoops.

I do make my own salad dressing – but the Husband doesn’t like it. So we have to buy HIM salad dressing.

I think you did great! I don’t take my boyfriend grocery shopping, or any shopping, with me. There is something therapeutic about grocery shopping for me and I go when I am in no hurry. He on the other hand is always in a hurry and endlessly complaining about how long I take. Every time I ‘have’ to run in and he is with me I regret it.

And I believe I was less nice than you and said “f that, I am not paying for you to eat me out of house and home. Buy it yourself or you’re taking me to dinner.”

The past two weeks I’ve sent Joey to the store by himself. The first week he came home without several important ingredients and the second week he came home with hot chocolate mix instead of cocoa powder. If the first ingredient is sugar, it’s probably not what I want. I think you did pretty darn good!!

Reply

cleaneatingchelsey February 1, 2011 at 5:47 am

That is so funny about Joey – hot cocoa/cocoa powder …. I can see the mistake! :)

Stefanie @TheNewHealthy February 1, 2011 at 12:02 am

I think you did fabulous!

And I think you also did pretty great coming out with only Captain Crunch! Sam and I have tried grocery shopping together–let’s just say we came home with more Little Debbie/Candy/Chips than I could handle. Never again.

He still occasionally stops at the store and picks up junk for himself–but usually he’ll just eat what I pick. :)

That’s what John does too – he’ll make a stop every once in a while for his junk. I refuse to buy it myself.

I think you did great!

Usually when my husband comes grocery shopping with me he says I’m buying too many vegetables. He thinks putting salad in the cart is all you need to make a big delicious salad. I normally send him off to pick out salsa and then load up on the essentials so he can’t complain about what I’m putting in the cart. Luckily he doesn’t like a lot of junk foods so we make it out of the sotre with mostly healthy foods.

I am in awe of your grocery shopping fortitude. I’ve considered using PeaPod before just to save time and stop impulse grocery buys. With 4 stores on your itinerary, though, that may not work for you.

re: Manicures. I will admit to having a pedicure once. I view it like going to the dentist. When I leave the dentist, my teeth feel smooth and crisp, and there is this sense of accomplishing some vague health necessity. When my pedicure was done, my feet felt less cumbersome, dry, and scaly, and I felt that it was worth doing every now and then. No clear coat though. That’s probably not allowed by the code of manly deeds. Unless they make a type that is impact resistant? THEN I’d get it for sure.

I think you did really well! I can relate on bringing men shopping. I have had to scold my boyfriend in trader joe’s several times. He stays as far away from the produce isles as possible. Although it’s nice to have someone to carry the heavy bags, it is way more stressful shopping with him!

I ABSOLUTELY LOVE going to the grocery store. I actually still live at home with my parents and my “chore” is to go grocery shopping each week. My mom hates going to the grocery store and as I love it I said that I would do it. It does require alot of planning on my end as I have to sit down with my mom every thursday night to write a list and then I have to go through the fridges and freezers to check what we need for the week. I usually stop at 3-4 stores each week and I CANNOT leave the “main” store we shop at without spend 170-180$ a week. I NEED to figure out how we can spend less!
