Someday I’m going to learn to bite my tongue – hard.
It seemed like a perfectly acceptable thing to tell the Husband this morning that I was starting to go a little “stir crazy” with Cabin Fever.
Someone should have stopped me because this snow day was anything BUT low key.
Today was one of those days where if I was a drinker, I’d have pulled out the wine by 11 AM and not looked back. Thankfully, I’m not a drinker because I had some driving to do today.
My day started innocently enough – my niece and nephew came over to keep me on my toes company while my sister went off to a doctor’s appointment. Between my already pounding head and no patience whatsoever, it didn’t really make for the best babysitting time. I probably could have won the Worst Aunt of the Year Award in no time.
Clearly they are not phased and love me anyways, but still – I stunk today.
Then at about 11 AM, for the third morning in a row, Charlie threw up his breakfast. All of his breakfast. My goofball pup also threw up two socks yesterday. Did I forget to mention that?
Needless to say, I got scared. Does everyone remember my history with sock lovin’ doggies?
Meet Duffy Jr.
After an hour in the vet, three x-rays, and $200 later, it is determined that Charlie’s intestines look “suspicious”.
SDLKFSEDKJWEOIRUEWR (frustration inserted there)
What is suspicious exactly? Suspicious means Charlie will most likely have to have surgery tomorrow morning because of an intestinal blockage.
Stupid sock lovin’ pup. Goodbye dreams of a vacation in 2011 – doggie surgery doesn’t come cheap.
As mad as I am that Charlie thinks my casual socks are treats, I’m also really sad. He won’t eat, looks pathetic, and is curled up on the couch next to me sleeping with a fever. I feel like a bad mom.
Thankfully, I have the cure to the “my dog ate my socks and now has to have surgery” sadness. It comes in the form of chocolate – because everyone needs a little chocolate, right?
Chocolate Banana Oatmeal Cookies (inspired by Eat, Drink, and Be Vegan)
- 1 cup oats
- 1/3 cup sweet sorghum flour
- 1/3 cup GF all purpose flour
- 2 tbsp cocoa powder
- 1/2 tsp cinnamon
- 1/4 tsp salt
- 1 tsp baking soda
- 2 tsp vanilla
- 2 tbsp unsweetened shredded coconut
- 1 banana, smashed
- 1/4 cup maple syrup
- 1/4 – 1/3 cup unsweetened applesauce
Directions: Begin by gathering your dry ingredients. You might want to place them on a cutting board and slowly walk to your guest room where light is good and take a pretty picture before getting started. Pray you don’t drop it on the floor.
Combine your dry ingredients in a large bowl and lightly whisk together.
Today’s recipe included another great gluten free flour I have never used before – sorghum flour! Swanson Health Products also sent me this flour to try out and review as well. Of course, I have to tell you what a steal it is to buy this flour from Swanson – $2.91 for the 22 oz. bag of flour! I’ve bought many gluten free products in my day, and this is a great deal.
After your dry ingredients are mixed together, add your banana, applesauce, vanilla, and maple syrup. Begin by adding 1/4 cup applesauce and gradually increase the amount if needed. The batter should be a little thicker than muffins – it has a much different consistency than regular cookies.
Using a large spoon, divide the batter into 16 equal cookie and place on a nonstick baking sheet. Bake at 350 degrees for 12-13 minutes and let sit for 3-5 minutes before transferring to a cooling rack.
I loved the addition of the sorghum flour in these cookies – it was a successful first time using it!
If you have no self control like me when it comes to chocolate, you might burn off half of your taste buds eating one of these straight from the oven.
That’s okay – just remember the day you’ve had.
Sometimes a girl just needs some chocolate to forget her troubles – Worst Aunt of the Year? You mean BEST aunt of the year, right?
My dog is going to get cut open tomorrow to get foreign objects taken out of him?
It’s a good thing you can’t get drunk off of chocolate.
I’d be wasted by now.
Question: What is your go to comfort food?

Poor thing!
I hope the surgery goes well- I’m sure he’ll feel better in no time!
Girl, your photography has gotten phenOMENAL! It looks like you have a lightbox, kudos:)
Slash I am making these cookies tomorrow on Indulgence Friday, aka finishing the batch of cookies I just made and then eating all of these. Kkkkkay cool.
p.s. Your doggy is adorable, I guess it makes up a bit for the fact that he eats socks?:)
Chocolate is the perfect antidote for any bad day. I’m so sorry about poor little Charlie!
I’m sad for him and you.
Poor Charlie!!!! I hope the surgery fixes whatever is making him sick!!!
You cookies look DIVINE! One of my favorite comfort foods is peanut butter — SO good.
Awwww, oh no!! Poor Charlie!!!! I am so sorry to hear about that. Gosh, the things we would do for our pups. They are so worth it but its still not easy realizing how expensive they can be. Hope all goes well with him. Keep us updated.
Oh no, poor Charlie!! Puppies get into everything, don’t they? I cannot tell what is going on in that last picture, it seriously looks like that cookie is suspended mid-air and although chocolate is pretty magical, I don’t think that’s possible.
hahaha – that totally cracked me up. It’s on a glass cake stand.
the cookies look great!
they combine tons of things that i make and roll them into one…bananas, choc, oats, coconut…that would be comfort food for me too.
soooo sorry about charlie. and the dream vacay of 2011
I’m so sorry to hear about you pup!
I know what it’s like to have a sick puppy and its not fun!
Those cookies look awesome! I love your recipes
My comfort food is definitely something carb heavy like cookies/sweets, ect.
Aw, oh my gosh that is horrible! When I first got my pup (a wiener dog who lives with my parents)–she ate a bunch of Christmas ribbon. Yep, Christmas ribbon. Luckily she threw it all up and didn’t need any type of surgery. Good luck to Charlie!!
On a better note, I think these cookies will be perfect for a treat next week during the vegan challenge!
Aw, I hope all goes well with your sock-lovin’ pup tomorrow! I always feel awful when you can tell animals obviously don’t feel their best, you just don’t know what’s wrong. Best mom of the year award for taking him right to the vet, though!
Thanks Jess – I’m glad I caught it!
Poor Charlie! I hope everything goes well!
Your treats look like the perfect pick me up!
We all have our moments when we’re the worst ____ in the world. I’m sorry you had a crummy day. I hope your puppy has a successful surgery tomorrow. Now, get back to that chocolate and eat up!
Awww!!! Poor doggy! Sorry it’s going to cost so much though. :/
The cookies look delicious. I may make them…like…now.
Oh no, I’m sorry about Charlie! I hope he is OK through surgery and everything! We will be thinking about the lil guy:)
Those look fabulous!!
Hoping Charlie’s okay!!
definitely chocolate!! I can relate, today was one of those days!!
Poor thing! Hope all goes well with the surgery and he’ll be back to his bad ass sweet loving puppy self in no time! (and lock socks in safety deposit box!)
I bet they loved every.single.minute. of being with you…it was their “treat” to be with Aunt Chelsey…even if you were blah.
Let’s just be certain we keep the pup away from those spoons!
I’ll pray that he won’t need surgery…doggies are remarkably resilient. And yes, doggie surgery is ouch on the wallet, time off work and all that.
Comfort food? Carbs, basically. I haven’t the sweet tooth to it’s more like noochy popcorn and noocchy rice or quinoa. Anything in a bowl!
Much Love, Missy
Yum – I love carbs too. Thanks for the prayers. I hoe he doesn’t need surgery either!
I am so sorry to hear about Charlie. I watched our dog Fletcher eat a nylon knee high when he was about six months and I freaked out. We took him to the vet immediately to induce vomiting. One expensive bill later we learned our lesson, but he hasn’t. We try our best to keep socks and the like away from him but we are often finding the remnants in our backyard after they’ve worked their way through his system. At least he must have a powerful digestive system.
I’ll be hoping for the best for you and Charlie tomorrow and eating chocolate with you in spirit.
Oh no! He must have the gut of a chamption!
Sorry to hear about Charlie.
I hope the surgery goes okay!
Those cookies look phenomenal though. Chocolate and banana is definitely an amazing combination.
Poor Charlie! My comfort foods are dark chocolate and cereal.
mmm i love those cookies. cookies are DEF my comfort food!
Dogs aren’t cheap, are they? But SO worth it! Hope he feels better soon. Don’t let him near the chocolate!
He is so worth it – unfortunately you can’t put a price on pup love!
Wow those look delicious! do you think that I could use Spelt flour instead of the Sorghum one?
Yup! You can actually substitute allpurpose flour for the entire GF flour selection I have.
Aww poor pup! I hope he feels better and you do too!
I hope your dog’s surgery goes well! That’s so scary
Girl, the peanut butter jar is my comfort food. Me + a spoon + a jar of PB= mega comfort!
I’m so sorry to hear about Charlie! At least what he has is curable! Praying that all goes well
Yeah, because what he has is a bunch of clothes in his gut. haha
Oh no poor Charlie!
I hope his surgery goes well today.
I hope the puppy will be okay! He’s so cute!
Amazing looking cookies!!
My comfort food is more savory but I don’t know if I could pick just one!
Awwww Charlie!! It’s so sad to watch pets when they’re sick because they can’t even complain or tell you what’s wrong. I remember when our old lab was dying of a tumor my dad and I would take turns just cuddling with him because he looked so miserable all the time
Sending lots of love and prayers to your doggie baby!
That is so sad – I know, I just cuddled with him last night. Update though: he doesn’t need the surgery! It’s passing eventually…
Chocolate chip cookies with a glass of milk…hands down!!! Dangerous but delicious!
Oh my goodness, a sock? Poor baby! I hope everything goes well with the surgery today!
Loved this: “You might want to place them on a cutting board and slowly walk to your guest room where light is good and take a pretty picture before getting started. Pray you don’t drop it on the floor.” I do that all the time!
I love the inner workings of a food blogger and how they take their pictures! Hopefully your doggie is going to be a-okay!
CHARLIE….no!!! Intestinal problems…seriously, so expensive for doggy surgery! Your niece and nephew are adorable. Those cookies look amazing. My comfort food=potatoes (mashed or baked) and pizza! Have a great day gorgeous!
LOOOOOOOOOOVE potatoes!!! They’re my favorite!
My comfort food is anything pasta, whether it’s with with marinara sauce or with cheese.
Hope everything is ok with Charlie!!
ahh choco nanner cookies… i can taste that nanner sweetness already!! my ultimate comfort food is OATS!!!
Poor Charlie
I hope everything goes well and he gets back to being a happy puppy!!!
poor Charlie!! Hope it all goes well
Love the idea of oatmeal cookies. Funnily enough oatmeal and chocolate are my two comfort foods fo sho, so this recipe is pretty much perfect!
I’m so sorry to hear about Charlie!! I hope he feels better soon! Peanut butter is my go to comfort food! Peanut butter oatmeal cookies anyone??
Yum – those are some of my favorite too!
sorry about your puppy at least you have those delicious cookies!
Those look so delicious! I can’t believe your dog eats socks!
Poor Charlie
I hope he’s ok!!
Those cookies look delicious. Always a surefire way to brighten a day!
Those look just like the cookies my mom used to make my sister and I for our birthdays! I hope that Charlie is okay.
I hate it when my puppies are sick because they can’t tell me where it hurts. I’m sure everything will be just fine! Puppies are very resilient.
Aww prayers for Charlie!
Your niece and nephew are adorable, but I always feel like I’m on my toes when I sit for kids as well
haha!
Oh lalaaa anything with chocolate is right up my alley too, girlfriend
They sound delicious! x x
Oh no…I am so sorry!!! I hope the surgery goes well and I also sory for the dent this is going to make in old bank account. Grrrr!
Poor Charlie, and poor Chelsea’s Bank Balance!!
Those cookies look DELISH!
I don’t have any sorghum flour though, and I’ve no idea where to get that in the UK! Do you have any ideas for substitutes?
If you can have gluten, any all purpose flour will do – or any gluten free all purpose flours will work as well!
Test
test.
These look absolutely amazing… I love chocolate
And oats. particularly together!
amazing cookies!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I made them right away..it was hard not eating all of them!!!! so simple and delish..thank you!!! and..p.s sorry about Charlie…
Charlie turned out to be okay – he passed it the next morning, Thank God!
I’m glad you enjoyed the cookies!!!
Chelsea,
I am SO glad I stumbled onto your blog I can’t even tell you! I’ve been sitting here with my peanut butter and chocolate craving all evening and this just called to me….Can’t wait to make it AND eat it!!!
I just made these the other night and posted them on my blog! The boyfriend has had to taste lots of gluten free baking fails but he said this one was a definite success
Oh Good! I’m glad you enjoyed them!
