the perfect bowl

February 12, 2011

I’m hoping you will accept my public apology.

It has been twenty three days since oatmeal has made an appearance on this blog.

Food 006

If you’ve secretly been in a fight with me about it for the last twenty three days, I’m sorry.

Can we be friends again?

I promise it won’t ever happen again – I mean it this time.

Food 004

Perhaps the cold weather is slowly but surely destroying my brain cells.

It could be the fact that my God forsaken early arising is sucking the creativity out of me.

I might just be lazy at breakfast time too.

Let’s pretend it’s not that though.

Maybe I think it’s not too exciting to stare at a bowl of oats every day. However, then I remember how excited I get when I see bowls of oats on everyone else’s blogs each day. Of course you’d be excited to see my breakfast. Even if you weren’t, you’d still pretend for me.

I’ll never deprive you of the oats ever again.

Because you don’t see my breakfast every day, I thought I would show you the steps to success if you will.

That’s right – how to make the perfect bowl of oatmeal.

The Base:

  • 1/3 cup oats
  • 1 tbsp. flax seed meal
  • 1/2 banana, sliced thinly

Food 035

A few weeks ago Swanson Health Products sent me a few gluten free baking products, including Bob’s Red Mill Gluten Free Oats (only $5.39 – I usually pay $7.00!) and Flax Seed Meal ($3.09 – I usually pay $4.00!). These are already staples for me, but I couldn’t believe how much I had been paying for them until I went to their website.

February 2, 2011 023

Then I add:

  • 1 cup water
  • 1/3 cup almond milk
  • 1 tsp. vanilla

Food 051

I always add more liquid than you’re directed to – I’m a rebel without a cause. Or, I just like really voluminous oats. If you know me, you’d know it has to be that latter because I’m a rule follower with every fiber of my being.

I cook my oats a la Kath style – heated over the stovetop and gently whisked until all the banana is whipped into the oats. I then let the liquid absorb (this usually takes 2-3 more minutes).

The Stir-In’s:

Some days when I’m feeling adventurous, I will stir in 1 tbsp. or peanut flour or cocoa powder to liven the bowl up a bit. And let’s not forget the pumpkin – It never disappoints.

The Toppings:

My bowl of oatmeal is never the same. When I first started eating oatmeal four years ago (woah!), I always microwaved my oats (never again). I mashed up a banana and a tablespoon of peanut butter and cooked my oats that way. Boooooring. What good is oatmeal without a bunch of toppings? The possibilities are endless!

  • fresh fruit
  • dried fruit
  • coconut flakes
  • cinnamon (always)
  • granola
  • crumbled muffins/breakfast cookies (my favorite!)
  • nut butter
  • jam

Food 042

If you’re feeling really adventurous, you should try all of those at once.

I’m joking – that would be one hefty bowl of oatmeal.

Today I went for banana oatmeal with peanut flour stirred in. I topped it with cinnamon, coconut, a crumbled chocolate banana oatmeal cookie, and peanut butter.

Food 003

You’re right – it does look good.

And it tasted even better.

Food 002

I hope you’re not sick of looking at my oatmeal yet.

Food 001

You’re going to be seeing a lot more of it from now on.

Mainly because it takes a lot for me to choke out an apology.

Question: What’s the best oatmeal combination you’ve ever had?

Disclaimer: Swanson Health Product sent me these complimentary products to review. All opinions shared are purely my own – I was not reimbursed for this review.

Blueberries & strawberries in the summer, so fresh & delicious! I wish it was summer for that reason.

Love the opener to this post. It sounded like you were going into church for confession, haha. Anyways, that bowl of oats looks decadent. Did you use one of your new PB & Co. peanut butters?
For me, I love sweet potato oats. I’m pretty much obsessed.

Confession: I’ve only ever made oatmeal in the microwave…I think it’s time to change that. You convinced me! :)

I always use that flax seed they sent you- gotta “bulk up”, right? :)
My favorite combo to date is a “dessert oatmeal” of sunflower seed butter, coconut, and white chocolate chips. The savory sunflower seed butter is awesome with all the sweet….

Every morning I feel like i’m in heaven. I either eat bob’s red mill high fiber cereal or gluten free oats with almond milk with a melted banana, TONS of natural peanut butter and shredded coconut on top. So freakin goood! And occasionally I add the chocolate avocado mousse my sister makes into it or some cocoa powder :)

I went through a phase of eating pumpkin oats every. single. day. For months. 30-40 grams of oats with half a banana, cinnamon, pumpkin pie spice, and about 100 grams of pumpkin. After it was done cooking I stirred in a few Ghirardelli 60% dark chocolate chips and topped it with 365 creamy salted peanut butter. It’s really really good, even if it’s sort of like eating dessert for breakfast. :) [Sometimes I eat it for dessert too!]

me too! I have just gotten over my pumpkin phase, and fortunately the orange tint in my hands is going away.

Girl that sounds so good! It’s okay, we haven’t been fighting:) I’d have to say my favorite combo was cacao powder, coconut, cacao nibs, peppermint extract, and berries. It was like a thin mint!:)

I make mine a la Kath with 1/2 banana, milk/water, chia seeds, and vanilla. And my absolute favorite topping is peanut butter and chocolate chips. omg.

Haha! Love this post! And your oats look amazing!
I’m not a big cooked oats person, but I see oats on so many blogs, and I’m thinking that I need to give them another shot. I mean, you can dress them up just as much as you can yogurt.

Don’t ask me to pick a favorite combination of toppings, there’s just been sooo many good ones! This post is making me hungry. Are oats allowed for dinner?

Oats! I know some people get tired of seeing oats on peoples blogs but I never do. Maybe it’s because I like oats. Maybe it’s because I like pictures. I don’t really know.

My favorite combo is either oats, apple, cinnamon, raisins OR oats, pb, cinnamon, chocolate chips.

mmm – I love coconut! Soo good on oatmeal! Sometimes I’ll swirl in a Tbs of preserves (my fave is raspberry, or blueberry!) Soo good!

Oh my gosh, I have so many favorite oatmeal combos! One of the best ones was from this past summer: Oats cooked in almond milk/water with almond extract, 1/2 a peach stirred in in the last minute or so of cooking, and topped with crushed gingersnap cookies! Couldn’t tell if I was eating dessert or breakfast! It was heaven!

Gorgeous pics by the way!

I love crumbling cookies on top, such a treat! And I’m the sad girl who still microwaves her oats. I just can’t take the extra time to use the stove. Maybe I’ll attempt this weekend :)

YUMMY!! Hell I’ll never get bored of seeing your oats, or any oatmeal. Ever. I’ll also never EVER microwave my oats again. Stovetop rocks.

My fave combo is probably banana oatmeal topped with PB+J, with Dark Chocolate Dreams as the nut butter. It is AWESOME!! :D

Felicia February 13, 2011 at 7:28 am

Mmm that looks good.

To be honest, my favorite oatmeal combo has to be just oatmeal and brown-sugar. Simplicity at its best! I’ve only recently started experiment with oatmeal combos and I think I want to try to make a banana bread one filled with really plump raisins. Yum!

The supermarkets here charge ridiculous prices for GF oats too; £2.99 for 450g! Are there any companies in America which use “pure” oats anyway? I found that Mornflake, over here, guarantees all its oats are, which means I can buy them much more cheaply…
I was the same as you; nearly cried when I found out I could eat them again, three years after my coeliac diagnosis :-)

I cook my oats the same way Kath does for the first time today!!! I LOVED them this way. I will be doing this from here on out.
I also like to make them with pumpkin and add pumpkin spice!
My all time classic way, however, is oats, 1/2 milk (soy or fat free) 1/2 water, extra cinnamon, berries.
One time I added leftover acorn squash, pureed and cook the same way I do my pumpkin oats. I LOVED the acorn squash and I will be sure to use my left over squash this way again.

Just found your blog and I am in Chicago actually, so pretty close by! Great blog and I will be coming back again!
