There’s something that I love about the freshness of a new month (almost). It’s sad to say the thing I most look forward to on a week where the first of the month falls is grocery money. I love putting crisp new bills into my wallet, making a plan, and high tailing myself to the nearest (four) grocery stores.
Last week was the last week in the grocery shopping blues series. If you are catching up, I set out with a $250 budget, ended up spending $288, and we bumped our budget up to $300 a month for the two of us. We rarely eat out, and most breakfast, lunches, and dinners are prepared at home.
By high demand (by you!) I’ve decided to continue to share some of my shopping adventures. Let’s face it, I wanted a new experiment. I’m someone who is always looking to improve, to analyze, and to complete my tasks the best way possible. I’m not sure if that’s a good or a bad thing, but I’ll take it.
So, I bet you’re wondering what I did differently yesterday.
I frontloaded. I went to Costco. I wanted to see if buying some bulk items at the beginning of the month would pan out better through March.
We shall see.
Store 1: Costco
7 items = $54.50
That seems like a lot of money, right? I thought so too. Let me explain. I bought a 4.5 pound box of raisins for $7.29 (I usually buy one 1 pound box a week @ $3.00/box). That’s a monthly savings of $4.71. I also bought 5.22 pounds of chicken breasts for the Husband for $14.56 (that’s $2.79/pound) – that will last him MORE than this month alone. I also bought items such as: Crunchmaster crackers, dates, frozen broccoli, pears, and spinach – all items that can be used for weeks OR items that we go through very quickly.
Store 2: Jewel Osco
12 items = $19.97 (total savings $6.05)
See that big bag of potatoes? That was only $0.99! Not to mention we can use those potatoes for weeks. Chobani was also 10/$10, so I took advantage of it, even though I usually do not like eating flavored yogurts due to the added sugars. That gluten free flour mix will also last through the month, even though it is a whopping $4.00.
Store 3: Trader Joe’s
15 items = $22.65
All staples in our pantry – brown rice pasta, canned items, organic sweet potatoes, ketchup (although I buy one a week – no joke.).
And unpictured (though I am not sure why) was Aldi. I got 11 items for $18.12 (which prompted an interesting conversation with the register worker – War of 1812? 1812 Overture?)
If you’re hyperventilating by now, I understand.
If you’re screaming at me because it’s “not even March yet”, I understand.
Because, if you’ve had a calculator ready, you have already added up my total for this week.
$115.24
Yikes!!!
Surprisingly, I’m pretty calm. I’m pretty upbeat – and that’s saying a lot because I haven’t had coffee in three days. However, that’s another story for a different day (and yes, I will tell it and NO, I am not pregnant).
Question: Do you buy in bulk? What are your favorite items to buy in large quantities?

I have to buy my truvia in bulk, pancake mix and also fish. I can keep in the freezer forever. Other then that I tend to buy things weekly. Although cooking for one-it’s hard to justify much of anything in bulk.
Aah but if you’ve bought enough chicken to last a month and stuff like that, you won’t need to buy anymore..so next week, it won’t cost as much
I buy nuts/drief fruit in bulk, cos they keep so long, and I buy parsnips in bulk cos I get through them SO. Fast.!!
Jewel was having the same Chobani sale at the store by my house, and the WHOLE SHELF was empty. I was sad… Apparently people like their Chobani.
Buying bulk at the beginning of the month is a good strategy!
Uhhhh you’re going to cry when you read this but the last time my family (2/3 people living in the same house, depending on whether I’m home) went to Costco we spent over $400. Which means two things: 1) we hoard food (we actually really do), and 2) we suck at grocery shopping. Though I’m pretty sure about half of that bill was Sabra hummus, Kashi cereal and Maranatha almond butter…
That actually made me laugh – when I lived with my parents, we could drop 200 easily! We always had a plethora of food there!
I am so so happy you are continuing to do your grocery shopping series. I LOVE buying in bulk….I am going to have to copy you and buy raisins in bulk too. I buy my spinach, broccoli, apples and pears at costco. We also buy bread, eggs and milk there too (and burritos, corndogs and taquitos for Billy). GREAT job and you motivate me to not be lazy and go to more than one store to get the best deals. I hope you are having an amazing day!!
YOU motivate me!
I know you like to buy your broccoli in bulk there!
No COFFEE!! Ack, I’d be freaking out! Good for you, girl!
We do buy some things in bulk — chicken/fish, dried fruit (usually SO expensive), oats. Oh, and dried pasta. Costco is a fun place — especially when they have all the samples
Oh, the freak out ensued on Friday.
I think buying in bulk at the beginning of the month is a great idea, too! I buy in bulk things like oatmeal, some flours, spices, nuts, seeds, even sugars – those types of things. Spices can be SO expensive in the grocery store so I just wait until I feel like driving out to this restaurant discount store place thing (lol) that has stuff like that at a mega discount.
Does Costco have a good selection of natural foods and such? I don’t have access to one locally, but there’s one up in Burlington and I’ve been wondering if it would be “worth it” to join.
“restaurant discount store place thing” <- I got ya. It's a technical terms!!
Costco is AWESOME with organic and natural products. Seriously, most Kirkland brand (Costco brand) items are organic!!
I don’t currently buy in bulk but need to start. They are building a Costco close to my house so I foresee it happening in the future.
Oh my goodness WILL YOU SEND ME A GIANT 4.5 POUND BOX OF RAISINS FOR MY BIRTHDAY?! That would actually be the best birfday present, you know about my addiction:)
I should try budgeting my groceries again… I spend WAY too much money for one 22 year old girl…
Coffee, gum, and snack bars are my staples that I buy in bulk!
Wow! You got a lot of saving girl! I find that when I by bulk, I save money (on things that we use quickly or that lcan ast a while). I always buy apples in bulk, bananas, flax, etc.
I think your plan to front load at the beginning of the month is a smart idea. That way you are just pretty much buying produce (and ketchup) the rest of the month, since you already restocked your pantry.
xoxox
Kathleen
I really commend you on sticking with a food budget. This is the one area of my finances I struggle with, so I’m enjoying reading your tips
LOL “No, I’m not pregnant” , you’re too cute!
I don’t normally buy in bulk because I live alone, but once I get married – I think I’ll become more of a Costco regular
The prices there seem overwhelming at the time of purchase at Costco, but it all lasts so long!
Your crackers are back! Yay.
I like the idea of frontloading….maybe you can have a frontloading budget seperate from the weekly?
I, too, have drastically cut out the caffeine…I am eager to see what your take on it is…my initial noticings are a deeper sleep and more dreams.
I about freaked out when I found them there last month – I seriously danced in the aisle and held them over my head. My mom laughed, the Husband cried.
Costco is great for bulk! I always get veggie burgers for something quick to eat, huge bags of frozen veggies to save money on buying all fresh produce, and they have awesome 5 lb bags of organic quinoa.
I live in VA. But in the summer we go to Amish country up in OH. We hit several bulk food stores and I stock up on spices and baking suppies for a fraction of what I pay in VA. Our favorite is Walnut Creek which my some refers to as the Amish Kroger:) As for bulk at Costco (actually I go to Sam’s Club) I buy paper products, dishwashing liquid and laundry detergent there.
Keep us posted as March progresses.
Kathleen
Amish Kroger? I love it!
I love love love Costco! Even though I live by myself, I find myself going there at least once or twice a month. I try not to buy too much because I don’t want things to go bad, but anything that will keep for months I usually get at Costco.
Other than that, canned beans, yogurt, pasta, etc. are the types of items I buy in bulk if they are on sale. Great post!
Costco is definitely the way to buy in bulk. I love getting vitatops, Fage, and nuts from there. Plus nut butters are so much cheaper!!
I buy oats in bulk!
I would do more bulk shopping, but I don’t have a car so Costco is not really a viable option. Unless I cab it which kind of defeats the purpose of saving ha. Love these grocery posts; keep ‘em coming! You inspire me to pay more attention to my food purchases.
I really should buy in bulk because I know it will save me a lot of money in the long run, but seeing the big price tag scares me!
They scare me too!
Yes! I love Costco. The hubbs and I are meat eaters so we buy our chicken and pork at Costco. We also buy broccoli, fruit, olive oil, baking supplies and cereal from there. Everything (except the fruit) we get usually lasts us a good two months so I definitely think it’s worth it. And I just did my first grocery shopping for March too, love the 1st trip of the month!
i have the same feeling about grocery money too- so good to have a fresh month!
I don’t have a Costco membership anymore because I didn’t use it often enough to pay the membership fee. I always ended up just buying random stuff, too – and that’s never good!
I probably wouldn’t take advantage of it if I didn’t use my mom’s card!
I don’t like eating the Chobani yogurts, b/c of the sugar content either. Do you use a different yogurt brand and add something to it? I’ve bought the plain yogurt and added fruit to it, but it still doesn’t quite have the ‘sweet’ taste for me!
I honestly just like the stuff plain – sometimes I’ll add some berries or something to it or some peanut flour to make it a “peanut butter greek yogurt”.
I love Chobs, regardless of its sugar content. Whoops
I still think 115 dollars for all that is good! ESPECIALLY because you got staples!!
I get pancake/waffle mix and oatmeal in bulk. I think I have enough oats to last a year. Haha we also get our dog and cat food at costco because its nearly half of what petco charges.
Nearest big store like that is 2 hours away so when we make a trip, we get a lot of stuff.
I mean, we buy frozen chicken breasts and the like to cut costs, but otherwise, we don’t have a ton of space in the house to stash bulk-y things. Good luck with the budget this month!
I’m so happy to see you mention Aldi. It’s so underrated and misconceived, but it’s really such a great hidden treasure! I have just recently discovered it and although I wouldn’t get everything there, its a fantastic money saver for basic items and ingredients, as well as some bonus gourmet european snacks!
I agree – I did research on the store to see why the prices were so low. It makes sense!
Superior thinking dmoensrtated above. Thanks!
I just ordered 3 – 2 lb bags of peanut flour. Back in my serious nut butter days, I’d regularly hoard 5-6 jars at a time. I’m back on a more modest 1-2 at a time now though.
I need to take a picture of my “peanut butter shelf” for you.
Capt’n Crunch. haha I know how much you love it! When my mom goes to Sam’s she just stocks up cause you can get the 3 in 1. Shame on me.
I sometimes buy in bulk, but it is so discouraging when you look at your receipt, granted in the long run it saves you money.
l love costco to buy in bulk!!! Its an awesome feeling to get so much all at once and not have to go back so often to the grocery store
bulk, yes, to a point
stevia, paper products, non perishables but at some point it’s just overkill.
i never buy produce in bulk, i find it spoils too fast or i am “racing” to use it up…and i hate that feeling. Id rather pay a little more per serving and buy in avg quantity, rather than bulk.
another story??! i must KNOW! i love buying in bulk! not only do i save money, but then i dont have to worry about running out of my essential foods!
I don’t buy a lot in bulk because I only cook for myself and I have limited space because I have 2 roommates.
I think that you did great! I love to buy staples and meat in bulk. That way I don’t have to purchase them every week and it makes shopping a little bit easier!
girly, I just found your blog. I’m lovin’ it!
And for buying in bulk, that price is pretty impressive. I rarely buy foods in bulk because I live alone and have limited pantry space, but I definitely keep cosmetic items (shampoo, shaving cream, medicine, tp, paper towels, etc.) in bulk. I think they’re my biggest “omygosh I’m out of ___ and I’m gonna die!” items.
Hi Alyssa! I just check out your blog – loving those glasses, so cute!
I lived with my parents through my fiance’s deployment and they shop a lot at Costco so I enjoyed their purchases.
I think Costco has a lot of good products.
We are moving into our own place next month and I think we will still go to Costco for nuts (like trail mix, almonds), toilet paper and the like, and anything else that catches my eye!
I looooooove costco! I only go about once every two months, but when I go I get a massive bag of chicken breasts, broccoli, frozen fruit, and well whatever really catches my eye, I’m like a kid in a candy store there
When the BF moves in I joke that we will have to do all of our shopping there cause he eats like a horse!
I buy dried cherries and oatmeal in bulk; I eat those things every day and it saves so much money! That $22 box of cherries is totally worth it when I only have to buy it once every couple months!
Costco is the jam! We buy spinach, almond butter/peanut butter, chicken, and some fruits in bulk- totally worth it
Oh no – YOU are the “jam” for using the word “jam”!!!
Pretty sure Costco is the greatest thing ever! My mom and I make Costco trips every couple weeks…couldn’t live without it!! And their stuff does last for a long time, so I’m sure it will help you!
I love buying in bulk we have a sams club here although costco sounds so much cooler, I usually buy spinach (we go through 3 a week) and for organic its almost impossible to afford whole foods, I also buy apples, portobello mushrooms, and lemons there. Im obsessed with crunchmaster crackers had them for the first time over the weekend and I am dying to buy more!
I didn’t know there was a term for buying bulk foods and using them throughout the month, frontloading? Interesting. Sounds like a sport! I could get into that! You’re so aware of the money you spend at the grocery store. I need to be like that. I just pick up whatever [healthy] things I want and well, let’s just say our budget is nowhere NEAR $300 a month. Maybe it’s because you’re in US? Healthy foods in Canada are so ridiculous expensive. I bought that SAME box of raisins at Costco and it was $12.00 and I thought that was a steal of a deal.
PS: Maybe you’re so upbeat and awesome because you haven’t had coffee!? So happy you gave it a try and it’s working for you
I have never bought in bulk, but I think in the long run it could def save some money! It’s just a lot of money all at once…I guess you just gotta get over that!
I buy in bulk a lot from Costco. It really saves a ton of money!
I love my costco trips. Bread, tuna, beans (when canned), crushed tomato, salmon burgers and bananas are always picked up in bulk. It’s nice to have a stock at home for times I don’t meal plan very well or have already spent my monthly food budget.
I think this is such a good idea and I might have to do it when I get paid next (the 14th) although I think I’d be shocked; I bought something food-related six days out of seven last week and that’s not good! (I get through that much ketchup too
)
I buy GF oats in serious bulk – 3kg bags and that’s some serious oatage!
Costco is my favvvv – I buy all my fruits and veggie there! And I’m not afraid to say that I love to go for the samples
I’ve been lurking the last few days, but I really love your blog, so I am adding it to your Google Reader ASAP. My husband and I buy some things in bulk from Costco, but it’s not really cheaper because of the markup we pay in Japan.
We go the the grocery store every week and it’s pretty obvious we don’t buy in bulk because by Friday the shelves are empty!
I don’t know what I’d do without my Sam’s membership! I used to buy my 3lb container of spinach from there, but they just tried to sneak something over on me and started selling a 1lb pack for the same price! Uh…no! I still like going to get my bagel thins/english muffins, cheese, and berries. They are selling the juiciest strawberries right now! I’m loving it!
