soldier field 10 mile race

May 28, 2011

It’s funny to me that waking up at 4:30 on a weekday seems normal to me, but being rudely awoken to an alarm at 4:00 on a weekend just seems wrong and unfair. Luckily, I had good reason to be awake, and I was up and at ‘em quickly out of excitement.

Today, I was one of 15,000 participants of Fleet Feet’s Soldier Field 10 Mile Race in Chicago.

May 28, 2011 002

When I woke up, I quickly had an “oh crap” moment as I forgot to charge my iPod last night. Thankfully, I had about an hour before I left, so that was rectified soon after. I set out all my clothes last night and packed a bag of clothes to change into after the race. I also woke up to give myself time to eat before the race. I never ever evverrrr run races without eating. You’ve probably heard this from other runners before, but I will never “experiment” with breakfasts on days of races. I stick to plain banana oatmeal with peanut butter. That way, my stomach won’t act funny during the race.

My number one supporter (aka Mom) joined me this morning and happily (ha!) drove us downtown. I was greeted by a swarm of people.

May 28, 2011 005
Out of 15,000 people, I actually found one of my old co-workers who I have raced with before in the corrals. I was glad to have a running buddy, and we amused ourselves for the 45 minutes we were waiting to start running. Who knew having a plastic baggie full of dates down your sports bra could be so funny? (That was me, by the way).

Before we knew it, it was almost time to begin. But not until after honoring the service men and women in honor of Memorial Day weekend.

May 28, 2011 007
May 28, 2011 009
Once the national anthem was sung, the first of the racers were off!

May 28, 2011 010
Unfortunately, we were pretty far back in the corrals, so we didn’t get started until about 15 minutes after the first runner began. We started off really strong, averaging a little under 9 minute miles.

May 28, 2011 012
I’m here to tell you that was a mistake. I never go out fast – I usually run negative splits (get faster with each mile) or close to it. I have to start slow to find a good pace and keep it there. We were rocking it for the first 6 miles, coming in just under 53 minutes (8:50 pace). Just around this time, I began to get really horrible side cramps. I tried to keep up with my running buddy, but had to take a few walking breaks. I told her to go on without me while I tried to recover.

I have been getting side cramps a lot while running lately, and I don’t know what to attribute it to. Has anyone ever had this problem? What has helped you?

The last two miles were really hard for me – and I struggled – a lot. Next time I will definitely go out slower and not let my adrenaline get to me!

I came in at 1:32:44 – which was a 9:16 pace – not too shabby! My goal was 1:30, and I totally could have gotten that if I hadn’t had to stop to walk a few times.

May 28, 2011 016
I was laughing at myself though – the last two miles, I kept thinking: “uggh why am I doing this? I haateeee this right nowwww!!!” and the second I finished, I thought: “I can’t wait for my next long race! This was amazing!”

The most amazing part of this race? Finishing on the 50 yard line of Soldier Field and watching myself on the Jumbo-tron! Unfortunately, I was one out of 5,000 tall blondes wearing black, so my mom couldn’t find me in the crowd to get a good picture of me finishing.

May 28, 2011 018
After the race, my mom and I wanted to stay downtown for a while, so I had to pull out her secret weapon after running: baby wipes. When us kids were younger, we went on a lot of missionary trips for church, and my mom would go running in the mornings. There were no showers available until the afternoons, so my mom would “sponge bathe” with baby wipes until the afternoon. Not ideal, but it works.

I have to tell you, I’m kind of a stickler on hygiene, so this kind of freaked me out a little bit. There was no way I was going to feel comfortable changing into normal clothes after running 1o miles without showering. You know what? It did the trick for a few hours.

Which is why I look semi-normal on our lunch date at the Whole Foods in Lincoln Park.

May 28, 2011 021

All I know is my salad was about 1.5 pounds and I ate almost every last delicious bite.

May 28, 2011 019

I also discovered a DIY trail mix bar at this Whole Foods where I made myself a delicious blend to snack on this afternoon – it was fabulous.

We spent the next few hours browsing and shopping on North Avenue until I could barely walk or keep my eyes open anymore. I promptly fell asleep within about five minutes on the way home.

Let me tell you – taking a shower never felt so good when I arrived home this evening. Sitting on my butt on the couch is my next and only priority for the rest of the night – right along with eating my body weight in granola.

Someone may need to carry me to bed later – and I don’t think Charlie will be able to lift me. This may be a problem.

Question: What is the last thing you accomplished that you were proud of? Have you ever used the baby wipes trick?

After a long sweatty walk in Texas, nohing like that, you wonderwoman!
PS- Hope Mom paid for your $20 salad and that you snuck some extra goodies in the basket at WF.

Awesome run, Chelsea! I want to try and run a race where you finish in a stadium! That must have been so amazing!
Enjoy the rest of your weekend :)

Congrats on running a great race, Chelsey :] And geeze, you clean up well. I never would have guessed you went from running ten miles right to WF in that pic of you. Gorgeous, as always!
I can’t remember, though – are you in the process of training for a half and this is one of your training races, or was this the one you were training for? Just curious!
I’ll have to remember the baby wipes thing ;)

Reply

cleaneatingchelsey May 30, 2011 at 7:32 pm

That was the one I was training for – except I am looking into doing another half sometime this summer/fall!

Reply

BrocStar May 28, 2011 at 8:30 pm

Ha! That was my thought process during my marathons. I’m pretty sure that will be my thought process for a lot of future races, too. Sometimes, I really do love running while i’m doing it, but sometimes I just like it after it’s over. :D
I haven’t used the baby wipe trick. At the gym, I bring a wash cloth and get it soapy and use that as a temp. fix. I don’t like bringing all my shower stuff to school with me, so I just wait it out.

Reply

cleaneatingchelsey May 30, 2011 at 7:32 pm

That’s a good tip too! I think the baby wipes would be easier though – give it a try!

Haha, the baby wipes trick is too funny! :) I don’ thtink I’ve ever really used it but it doesn’t sound like a half bad idea… when my brother & dad did teh seattle to portland bike ride they had actual showers at the finish line, which was interesting. Not feasible for most races though ;)

You ran a great great race, congratulations!!! :)

Congrats on your race!! You rocked out there, eh?? I’d I read your blog tonight – everything happens for a reason right – I’m running the Ottawa Half tomorrow and needed a reminder NOT to go out to fast. It always kills me, and then I have an empty tank circa 17 km (= 8-9th mile id say).

Enjoy your post-race!

Congrats, girl! That’s so amazing. And you look so great in those post-race pictures! I would have never been able to tell that you just ran for an hour and a half.

I learned the baby wipes trick while camping when showers were scarce. It’s definitely not my favorite way to get clean, but it works in a pinch.

Reply

Ew, I don’t camp – which is maybe why I have never done the baby wipes thing. :)

Congrats on your race Chelsey!! You totally rocked it despite your side cramp issue. I had a long run last week, about 8 miles, where I got a side cramp which is super rare for me. I think it is because I usually ONLY eat an apple before a longer run or race and this time I ate and apple AND pineapple. Too much acid for me maybe.

Reply

cleaneatingchelsey May 30, 2011 at 7:35 pm

My stomach is really sensitive to acid as well!

Reply

Kim May 28, 2011 at 9:06 pm

Congrats!!! I live right by that Whole Foods, I would so love to run this race next year. As for the side cramps, I realized that people typically get them on the right side – as that’s where your liver is, and is kind of attached annoyingly to your diaphragm. I looked up how to deal with these, and it’s all about changing which step you in breathe in and out on. Don’t always breathe in when your right foot strikes the pavement, etc. Ever since I began switching this up during my run, I have had zero side cramps!!

Reply

cleaneatingchelsey May 30, 2011 at 7:35 pm

That is honestly the best Whole Foods in the Chicagoland area – I love it! It was my second time there.

Congrats on your race! I, too, have used the wipes trick. I don’t love not having options but it sure helps in a pinch!
Something to try when you cramp…every 8-10 breaths, blow on the exhale as if you’re slowly and steadily blowing out a candle. It’s important to keeping exhaling past the point you think you can. (The next inhale will be very deep and feel almost frantic.) It clears all the air out of your lungs and breaks the pattern of quick, shallow breathing. Don’t know if that will help you but it works for me! :)

Babs May 28, 2011 at 9:23 pm

Is running 2 miles something to be proud of? I say yes! Great job on the race, Chelsey!! I’ve always wanted to do a 10 miler. Running with a buddy can be good, but it can also be bad if you find yourself trying to match their pace instead of doing what you know your body needs to do. I know from experience! I’ve heard that if you breathe in and imagine your breath is filling up the spot where your cramping is it helps. But that also sounds a little ridiculous as I’m typing it…

P.S. A trail mix bar? YES PLEASE!

Reply

cleaneatingchelsey May 30, 2011 at 7:36 pm

Her pace was what mine usually is too, but later on in the race – it was just way too fast too soon!

Reply

Jess May 28, 2011 at 9:27 pm

That is a great pace, great job!! I get side cramps sometimes, and I have no idea why. Sometimes I do, sometimes I don’t! I think it’s partially when I am breathing “badly.”

Baby wipes can do wonders. We “bathed” with them a lot on our backpacking trip through Europe. M had one this week after our playground adventures. And I will SO use them after races in the future. :)

You did great even though it was rougher. And isn’t it crazy how the high of passing the finish line washes everything else away.

Nice job on the race! Sounds like a lot of fun. Two things:

1. Baby wipes – yes. I ran a 5k this morning and kept some in my car, as a just in case. [We went home right after the race though, so I didn't use them.]

2. Cramps – focus on breathing. I find that if I focus on my breathing by counting my breaths to my footsteps. I like to inhale for 5 counts, exhale for 4, so you always alternate. Or you could inhalf 4, exhale 3…whatever works for you!

I am so glad to read an honest post about having to walk and having moments of thinking, “Why am I doing this to myself!?” Just this morning, I had a long run of 8 miles and I found myself taking two quick walking breaks. It’s so nice to know it’s normal…I always feel like everyone is an elite runner and I shouldn’t need to stop! That’s ridiculous!
Anyway, again…congrats! :-)

Congrats on the run! To help the cramping you have to be well hydrated. Drink plenty in the days before you do a big run, and just before the run too (which is hard to do because then you’ll have to pee…) But what also works for me is exhaling when your right foot hits the pavement, I read it a long time ago on some runner’s website and haven’t had a problem since!

Great job at the race!! :) Don’t be too hard on yourself for going out too fast, that’s a lesson everyone has learned the hard way. It’s hard not to get swept up in the excitement and when the adrenaline gets pumping. But you were a trooper and gave it your all to the end and weren’t even that far off of your goal!

For cramps, what has helped me is to breathe in through your nose, and then out through your mouth. Try to keep it really controlled, sometimes that does the trick for me. Stitches are the worst. :/

And the best reward is always getting your grub on after a race! Oh, and I’ve definitely had to use the babywipe trick before, that and I’d keep a stick of deodorant on hand too. :)
