Before I went on my vacation to the Dominican Republic, I had mentioned we had no idea where we were going to be staying.
Sounds risky, right?
In a way, it kind of was. I was afraid we would end up at a resort full of kids – which of course sounds weird because I love children, just not on my relaxing tropical vacation where I want peace and quiet.
When we got to the airport last Monday, an Apple Vacation representative was there to give us our “resort assignment”, and she seemed very excited for us. I was excited too as I thought we didn’t get to find out where we were staying until after we landed in Punta Cana. We were told we were staying at Secrets Sanctuary in Cap Cana.
We stayed at a Secrets resort for our honeymoon, so we knew it was going to be very nice – on our honeymoon the service and beauty of the resort was absolutely fantastic. It didn’t hurt that we got to look up pictures of the resort before we headed onto the plane as well!
Secrets Sanctuary was exactly what its name says – it is a peaceful adults only resort that is hidden away in Cap Cana, which is a gated area of Punta Cana very close to the airport (short shuttle ride!).
Upon arriving, we noticed how authentic and rustic the buildings looked – open and airy (but not air conditioned unless in the guest rooms or restaurants) which was typical of the Dominican style.
The grounds were absolutely breathtaking. From the lobby to the pool areas, there was always something to look at or to take a picture of – we always felt like we were in paradise.
There were a lot of pool areas in the resort, which made up for the small beach area the resort had.
Our favorite pool was (of course) the pool that had the swim up bar attached to it. I had my fair share of fruity adult beverages in the last week of my life – I am pretty sure I am still getting the jitters from thinking about my high sugar consumption from last week.
While there was the swim up bar and staff walking around for drink orders, the service around the pool was actually kind of slow. No big deal for me though – I enjoy lounging in the sun and barely noticed.
There were also two other pools near that main pool that were more “secluded” and private – one was an infinity pool at the back of the lobby and another was on the lower level of the lobby with a waterfall attached. We like to be where the action is, so we never went to these pools, but they were beautiful nonetheless.
One thing that impressed me about Secrets Sanctuary was the size of their standard guest rooms – the Junior Suite. These rooms had a full walk in closet upon entering, a full sized bathroom with a Jacuzzi and large shower, an area for the bed/nightstands, and another completely different section for a couch and an armoire with the television and mini bar.
The room also had a balcony with an “ocean view” which we could see if we really got on our tip toes and squinted enough.
The one thing that was disappointing about our room was the air conditioning. Everyone we talked to was having trouble keeping their room at a comfortable temperature, and no matter how low the air conditioner was set, the room always felt muggy and humid. In fact, a few nights when we went to bed, I noticed the sheets actually felt damp because of the humidity in the room. It wasn’t that big of a deal, but one thing I enjoy about hotels is cranking the air conditioner up as much as I want because I am not paying for it!
Overall, the resort in general was really nice – and I feel like we kind of lucked out compared to some of the other resorts we could have ended up at.
Something missing? I suppose we must have eaten at some point (or a lot of points – all inclusive!) along the way – stay tuned for Punta Cana: the food!
Question: What “makes or breaks” a resort/hotel for you? What is the best resort you have ever stayed at?

Yay for a great trip! The photos of where you stayed look amazing! You both deserved that beautiful getaway ; )
I live for laying by the pool and enjoying fruity drinks! I did that in Maui, I know what you mean about how much sugar, I had soooooo much on our honeymoon! My body was SO happy to be back on schedule with regular healthy food at home! Its worth it though on vacation, and glad you enjoyed it too!
Stinks about the A/C problem though, but hey at least that was the only problem ; )
love ya girl!!!
I have yet to get away to a resort, or vacation of any kind…. 10 more days and I’ll be on my honeymoon re-do though!!! First real vacation!!!!
You truly lucked out on the resort! Looks awesome!!! Drinks, a nice view (even if you had to squint to see the ocean), and water! Glad to have you back but sooooo glad it looks like a relaxing vacation!
ps- pedicure? Red toes look great!!!
The resort looks wonderful!
Pool/patio/beach service, i.e. food, drinks, is always slow. Even in the U.S And go the Caribbean..and it’s…manana
But like you said, not like you were in that much of a rush.
And yes have had my fair share of barely working a/c’s while on vacay. Damp sheets, always nice.
Nicest resorts…based on the most we’ve paid for hotels..the nicest ones would be the Bellagio in Vegas, the Hyatt Grand Cayman, and the Hyatt Aruba. The Hyatt Aruba was so expensive that it’s what prompted me to BUY real estate there!
Oh wow! I am so jealous!!! That place looks amazing! I haven’t been to many resorts, but your’s looks like it must be a ton of fun!!
Do you still get your morning bowl of oats there?
I have never been to that resort before..I have read lots about it.
What’s a deal breaker for me? If it is too far from the airport. We don’t like to travel an hour on a bus to get to a resort. That is valuable sun time.
Love your pictures!
A great pool makes a great beach resort for me. Swim-up bar is a major plus! Looks like a good time!
Looks so relaxing! Swim up bar?? Awesome. I’m glad you lucked out, can’t wait to hear about the food!
What a beautiful place! Glad you two enjoyed yourselves!!!
I know of so many people that go to Punta Cana for their honeymoons and LOVE it. Glad you and the hubby relived a wonderful and romantic memory. <3 you!
The last night in Guatemala we stayed at an amazing hotel!
AWESOME! We may have to look into going to Punta Cana next time we are planning a vacation. We just got back from Cancun, and the resort we stayed at there was wonderful (Fiesta Americana Condesa Cancun). However, the resort where we stayed for our honeymoon was AMAZING. It was Windjammer Landing in St. Lucia. I’m so glad you had a great trip!
I love Cancun/Riviera Maya – it’s my favorite!
Can’t wait to read more about your trip– I’ve been looking into going to the DR so I’m excited to see how you liked it.
I’m super jealous of your time spent lounging pool side! This looks like it was such a great trip.
I’m excited to learn about your vacation food
Wow, what a beautiful resort!!
So excited to hear about the food!
Totally with you on blasting AC in hotel rooms – bummer that yours gave you trouble! Can’t wait to see the all the delish food
Looks like a beautiful place!
The ac would have bugged me too because I am one of those vacationers that spends a lot of time in the room watching MTV because we don’t have tv at home. WHAT AN AMAZING TIME and you and the hubby look SO SO good together!! Beautiful resort!! What did you EAT…did they have options for you? Did you workout while you were there?
looks AMAZING, I’d love a vacation giveaway right about now.
I remember the same exact thing about our room always feeling humid and the damp sheets when I went to Cancun. Hrmph…
-courtney
Air conditioning would definitely be a “break” for me, along with bad service!! if i’m paying quite a LOTT of moolah, I deserve some good service
looks beautiful!! can’t wait to hear about the food!!
Wow! The resort is gorgeous!!! You’re such a lucky girl! I’m excited to hear about how you managed to eat vegan in a resort atmosphere!
So funny, my girlfriend was just at that exact same resort for her honeymoon two weeks ago!! She raved about it!
Looks absolutely beautiful! I’m so jealous! I can’t wait to read all about the food!
What a gorgeous and relaxing vacation!! And I COMPLETELY understand about not wanting to vacation around a bunch of kiddos. Vacations are about getting away from the little stinkers.
Wow what a gorgeous location! Lucky you
The Hacienda Encantada in Cabo San Lucas was by far my favorite place! My honey and I went there for our honeymoon and it was just fabulous!!!
Looks like Punta Cana didn’t disappoint!!
That looks like a beautiful resort!! These recaps are making me verrrry excited for my honeymoon
Your resort looks amazing! The pool side area is so pretty. Sorry about the AC though – that would have driven me crazy. I NEED cold air to sleep!
Also a nice pool area, a good beach, and good food are musts for me! I once stayed at Catalonia in the Mayan Riviera and it definitely fit the bill. I wish I could go back there right now!
That place looks gorgeous! Can you believe that I’ve never been to a tropical resort? Usually when I travel, it ends up being to a big city. I like the idea of laying out by the beach, but I think I might get bored? With how crazy life’s been lately, though, I definitely wouldn’t mind an escape!
The food has to be good
I have been to Punta Cana before for my fiance’s brothers wedding a few years ago. We had a blast. I surprised how much their food was good
haha plus having good drinks helped!
Anyone that I’ve ever known come back from the Dominican Republic has loved everything, except the AC situation in the rooms! It must be a common thing at any resort, do you know why?? I would love to go someday, but will have to figure out why ACs don’t work or are just weaker down there. Beautiful pics tho! I want to jump in that pool right now.
We stayed at Secrets Sanctuary Cap Cana for our honeymoon in June, and I thought it was spectacular! We also got married in Punta Cana, but at a Dreams resort. I must say – Secrets is definitely one of the better resorts in Punta Cana. I posted some shots of our wedding and honeymoon on my blog if you want to take a peek!
I LOVE THE DR!!! I lived there for three years ending last month (booohoo). It’s totally believable about the a/c problem!! You’re lucky you didn’t have the power go out! Haha. I guess they probably control that better in the super nice resorts, but in the majority of the city….
I stayed at a few resorts just overnight while I was there, and I wasn’t a big fan. They had more of a “camp” type feel. So I’m really glad you got a good one so you could get a good impression of the beautiful country. Did you ever leave the resort?
We went to Punta Cana for our honeymoon. We stayed at Excellence Resort, which is one of the older ones there, but it was incredible. We were concerned about staying at an all-inclusive because we are both total foodies, but the food here was INCREDIBLE! Before we left, we were wishing we had a trip planned to come back. Such a wonderful place!
We also did a tour of Punta Cana which was so fun. And they served us a delicious, authentic, Dominican lunch. YUM!
Boy your photos made me wish I was in Punta Cana right now!
