I am really like a little kid when I get a new toy. While I used to be excited about hula hoops (okay, that’s a lie because I couldn’t hula hoop), American Girl Dolls, and skip-its, times have changed. Although the Husband might still wish I could get excited about getting a package of Silly Bandz because they’re only $1.00 at the gas station. Instead, I make him get me a $3.00 Smart Water and cleanse my palette to let him know my taste has matured.
Now my new toys include things such as food processors, pictures to hang in my bathroom, and food dehydrators.
YES! I said a food dehydrator! I know, I squealed a little too. Luckily I’m not like Charlie or else I would have peed a little. However, that is neither here nor there, and I’m pretty sure I’m not making my crackers seem appealing with that being said.
Or maybe I am – aren’t they beautiful?
Yeah, I thought so too.
While I will get into the specifics of my food dehydrator in another post, I have to say that preparing raw food is by far one of the easiest things I have ever done in my life. I love how quick and relatively simple recipes/processes are to make delicious treats.
If you don’t know too much about raw foods prepared in a dehydrator, what happens is the food is not heated above a certain temperature, and basically sucks all the water/moisture out of the food. Just like going to bed at 10:30 sucks the life out of me when I get up at 4:30. True story.
When food isn’t heated above a particular temperature, the food isn’t considered “cooked” and all the nutrients are preserved, as opposed to when they are heated up in an oven or microwave.
Now that I have officially made myself feel like a Minnesotan (is that a word?), let’s move onto the food. Because that is in fact what you come here for – that or my incredibly witty banter. I’m going to go with the latter, but the former sounds pretty good as well.
One of the first things I made in my dehydrator was flax crackers. I studied a few recipes online only to find that it is basically seamless and pretty darn easy. Believe me, if I failed to screw it up, you certainly won’t. I’m kind of a disaster in the kitchen lately, remember?
I’ll be honest – I created and made this recipe, and when they came out of the dehydrator, I thought “meh, the flax aftertaste is a little much for my liking”. When a co-worker also thought the same thing, I decided there was only one thing to do – and that was not to throw them all away.
Bring out the curry powder party.
Raw Curry and Flax Crackers (makes a LOT of crackers)
- 2 cups whole flax seeds
- 1 cup ground flax
- water
- 1/3 cup lemon juice
- 1/2 cup nutritional yeast
- 1 tbsp. garlic powder
- 1 tbsp. bragg’s
- curry powder (enough to coat the crackers once dehydrated)
Directions: Begin by pouring your 2 cups whole flax seeds in a large bowl. Carefully pour enough cold water into the bowl so the flax seeds are just covered. It will seem like more water than you need, but I promise it will be okay. Let the flax seeds soak for 10-15 minutes. The seeds should “gel” and start to stick together. Once the flax has gelled, add your ground flax, lemon juice, nutritional yeast, and other spices (minus the curry powder). You can let this mixture sit for a few minutes to congeal together.
Turn your dehydrator to 115 degrees Fahrenheit. Spread 1.5 cups of the cracker batter onto dehydrator sheets (I had about 3.5 full sheets of cracker batter) and dehydrate for 6-12 hours. Halfway through, flip your crackers over. Your crackers will be done when they reach your desired consistency (i like really crunchy!). Break cracker sheets apart with your hands to create bite sized pieces. Place in a large plastic bag and coat with curry powder. Close and shake bag until all pieces are coated with the spice.

Easy peasy lemon squeezy.
Sometimes I surprise myself. This is one of those times.
And if anyone wants to take on the task of teaching me how to hula hoop, I pay in crackers.
Question: Have you ever dabbled into raw foods or used a dehydrator? What was your experience like?

GAHH!! i need a dehydrator!!!
So full of nutrition and deliciousness, this is a win….. As much as you tried, I still think I could mess this up and am slightly intimidated. You go, Chelsey! ….These would be good with a piece of fruit at school for a snack!!!
Can you make these without a dehydrator?? Please tell me yes!
YES! I would say preheat your oven to 350 and cook until cripsy. I don’t know exactly how long it would take, but I’m guessing anywhere from 15-20 minutes per side?
oh I’m so impressed- these look straight from a fun little organicy/raw/vegan package
I honestly gasped when I read that you have a dehydrator! Quite jealous right now….these crackers sounds great
Interesting…my toaster has a “dehydrate” setting. I think I should take this as a sign that I need to try it out
That’s so cool! I’ve enver heard of that!
Yep, I’ve never tried the a whole bunch of the settings, but I LOVE the toaster oven in general.
If you (or anybody else reading this) is ever in the market for the toaster oven, I highly recommend this one!

I love curry, and those sound great. I haven’t dabbled in raw food – it sounds too restrictive.
I need a dehydrator after seeing this post
Looks so tasty, crunchy and healthy!
I love making raw crackers, these are vegan, seeds-only (no nuts as sometimes nuts can weigh down raw goodies), GF and you can make them in the oven. and they’re sweet

I love your crackers!
I have a section of chips and crackers I made in my recipes. I used to use my dehyd more but now, it’s just..the oven for efficiency.
I made flax crackers in my dehydrator once, but they were kind of blah– I bet adding curry gives them a great kick of spice! I’ll have to try this!
Mmm, those are beautiful! I am always dabbling in raw foods. I think it’s so amazing what you can make just by combining things together in different ways.
Those turned out great! I need a dehydrator now
I have an excalibur but I’m sad to say I don’t use it much. Maybe your new recipes will inspire me to try my hand at them as well!
I’m really good at hula hooping and I’m dehydrator-less. I think we can work out a deal! I have 2 homemade hula hoops, I’m willing to share for crackers
I haven’t dabbled too much outside of salads, smoothies, and homemade Larabars, but I’ve tried a few other raw bars out there. The dehydrator sounds interesting. I’m curious to see what other recipes you use with it!
AW, fun!! I’ve always wanted a dehydrator but much like a juicer, I just don’t see myself using it enough to compensate the cost. It’s a great idea though.
I recently made a raw vegan corn chowder that I really loved. Other than that, I mostly just eat raw fruits and veggies.
My parents have a dehydrator and often send me the treats they make. Maybe I just need to steal (ummm…I mean borrow) their dehydrator for a while!
Such a great idea! I might have to steal this to make for Henry and Clara. Have you tried any other flavor combinations? I don’t think they’d go for curry.
I haven’t – but I’ve been thinking about a sweet cinnamon/maple flavor! That would be delish!!
yum! i agree! They would definitely eat that!
They look delish.
Oh my living vicariously self..I cannot wait for what is in store.
Please let us know how your kale chips turn out (you are gonna make them right?) because Averie’s beautiful nutreasty trees make me want to take out a loan to get a dehydrator.
Oh my and veggie and fruit chips? So expensive in the whole foods.
Raw granola?
Sincerely yours, Vicarious.
Um, yes I am going to be making those kale chips. I’m looking forward to it! I’m thinking a miso/nutritional yeast combo is in store.
Im from MN and people dont say “eh” lol. People in Canada do though!!
They did, didnt they !! haha. Well, then I cant blame you
I love my dehydrator! I use it weekly, I’d say. I make zucchini or eggplant chips all the time, I bet you’d love those!

I’m making raspberry fruit roll ups next.
Eating raw is SO interesting to me! I think we’d all be better if we incorporated more raw foods/recipes into our diets…like this recipe
Those sound fantastic. I’ve played around with raw foods and dehydrators back when I decided to go raw vegan buttttttt that ended up pretty badly for me, so I stashed the dehydrator away and plan on keeping it hidden until I’m sure that I won’t get sucked back into bad habits.
I made raw pasta tonight!!!! Girl we are twwwwinnnsss!! Also I am coming over.
And I like yo style. Meh, throw some curry powder on it.
We used to have a food dehydrator way back before raw food was even popular and I am still kicking myself for telling my mom to get rid of it during a move! We used to make all our own dried fruits and a few other raw recipes! Apparently you can’t always live by the rule of “If I haven’t touched it in a year, I must not really need it”!
I’ve resisted the urge to get a dehyrator just b/c I don’t want another “gadget” in the kitchen but some of the simple recipes like this make it hard to pass up!
I want a dehyrdrator so badly! I’ve made pretty good kale chips in the oven, but I know nothing would compare to dehyrdating them.
My best friend’s dad got a dehydrator when I was in high school. I remember him drying a lot of fruit on it and it was the BEST tasting dried fruit ever!!! I have been wanting one ever since then
These look all sorts of delicious! And that’s so cool that you got a dehydrator! I’d love to try playing around with making raw foods, but I don’t think I could ever make it a lifestyle. It seems like too much work! Plus, I love cooked foods. But I actually bought one of Ani Phyo’s books a few weeks ago because it was on sale for $10… I keep on meaning to give it a read!
You have so many food restrictions, don’t go raw on us too!
I have never purposely tried any raw recipes. Of course, tons of foods are raw that I eat all the time.
Did you buy you dehydrator somewhere or order online? I want to get one!!!
I have only tried dehydrating different fruits. The bananas and strawberries turned out really good. I will have to expand my dehydrator usage these sound great!
Minnesotan is definitely a word, but like someone said, we don’t really say “eh”
I’m with you on the toys we like now–new cooking tools are always so exciting for me to get!
Ah I looove kitchen gadgets! A food dehydrator sounds quite interesting and those crackers look delicious!
I’m taking a raw foods cooking class in September and it’s based on food deyhdration! I’m so excited and I LOVE flaxseed crackers aka *Flackers*. I buy them at whole foods.
Love raw foods and love our dehydrator!! Those crackers look great, love curry!!
