I’ve done multiple “day in the life” posts in the past. The last one I did was when the girls were about 6 weeks old and I was still on maternity leave. Wellllll, our days have certainly changed since then! Here’s a “typical” day (“typical” because no day is really the same in our house!) in the life with (almost) 5 month old twin girls. This was from last Wednesday, which was also a day where I didn’t take any pictures! Whoops!
4:30 – Wake up before my alarm, realize I have 15 more minutes to sleep, and tuck my phone under my pillow so the alarm doesn’t wake up the girls. Even though they’re in their own room now, I swear my alarm clock wakes Emerson up every day.
4:45 – Alarm clock goes off, and I grudgingly get out of bed. Last night was grad class night and I just want to sleep for a few more hours.
4:50 AM – Wash my face, grab my makeup, grab my pumping supplies, and set up shop on the couch. Put on my makeup and try to wake up while I pump.
5:20 AM – Emerson wakes up early and is talking to herself. I don’t want her to wake up Brooklyn (she talks REALLY loud), so I get her from her crib and put her in her swing. She is her usual excited self and can’t contain her excitement.
5:30 AM – I start making my oatmeal in the dark so the light doesn’t keep Emerson awake, and sure enough she is back asleep in about five minutes.
5:40 AM – Eat breakfast, finish getting ready, and tiptoe through the dark house so I don’t wake anyone up.
6:20 AM – I’m all set to go, my things are by the door, and I have 20 minutes to kill. I selfishly risk waking Emme up by taking her out of the swing to snuggle, but she sleeps right through it.
6:40 AM – My mom arrives, I give her the low down, and I head out the door for my commute.
7:15 AM – Arrive at work, meet with my teammates, and get ready for the day.
8:25 AM – The kids are at Art, so I take this opportunity to pump. Triple check that my classroom door is locked.
9:30 AM – Teach all morning…. Adding fractions. Oy.
11:10 AM – Lunch time! I’m having leftover slow cooker chicken, rice, and roasted veggies. It’s a good one!
11:25 AM – Time to pump again. Triple check the door.
12:05 PM – Teach teach teach!
3:00 PM – Say goodbye to the kids, get my stuff ready for the next day, and talk with some co-workers for a while.
3:25 PM – Head out the door and go home to those babies!!!
3:55 PM – Both girls are awake when I get home (woohoo!), but are just about ready to go down for a nap (booooo…). Unfortunately I get them all riled up because they’re excited to see me, and I end up with overtired babies.
4:45 PM – Both girls are finally napping after a lot of crying, shushing , and patting. I usually don’t have to do that, but when they’re overtired – watch out! I take this time to get in a pumping session and prep dinner before they wake up.
5:30 PM – Awake! We play for a bit while dinner finishes up.
6:00 PM – Dinner time, and the girls are not having it. I end up holding Emerson while I eat dinner, and Brooklyn whines on and off/has to be entertained while she’s on her play mat.
6:30 PM – It’s bath time, but both girls are starving, so we give them a few ounces of formula (we supplement) to hold them off until bedtime. I start with Emerson, and she is not too happy about bath time tonight. Brooklyn’s next, and she’s a little more into it.
7:00 PM – Bedtime starts. We turn down the lights, put the girls in their sleep sacks, and get some bottles going. Neither one of them are too hungry because they had just eaten a little while before, but they both manage a few ounces. I am feeding Brooklyn tonight, and she is out before I even put her to bed. Emerson plays in her crib for a few minutes with her lovey (a giraffe) before she falls asleep.
7:20 PM – I leave to run to Kohl’s. I definitely need a few more pair of pants.
7:40 PM – I hate pants shopping. This is depressing.
8:15 PM – Return home to find that my wonderful husband has already completed all of our evening “chores”. The kitchen is cleaned, bottles are made for the next day, bottles are cleaned and sterilized from the day, and the house is picked up. I married a good one ladies! Take this as an opportunity to jump into the shower and dry my hair.
9:00 PM – Finally sit down on the couch. Eat a few squares of dark chocolate. Catch up with tonight’s episode of The Middle.
9:30 PM – Time to pump. Catch up on tonight’s episode of Modern Family (HILARIOUS).
10:00 PM – Dream feed time for the girls. We pop their bottles in while they’re asleep, and they down a few ounces.
10:20 PM – Crawl into bed. I’m exhausted!
I’m off today because I apparently live in Siberia once again – I’m crossing my fingers for tomorrow too! Wind chillds of –30 to –45 degrees, say what! Have a good Monday everyone!

Wow! You’re a machine! I’m in awe!
Impressive schedule!
LOL - gotta get it done!
Oh my god!!! I’m tired just thinking about getting up at that time with such a busy day ahead. I definitely wouldn’t have been able to drag myself pants shopping!!!
I know and Shopping for pants at Kohls for me in ANY size is always Annoying, we feel for you Chelsea, did you snag any cute like Carters play sets on sale there instead, that’s what always happened for me
haha - I should have looked for something for the girls to make me feel better about myself!
ugh, it was a disaster. it was not a good way to end the night!
I am really amazed at your 430 wake up. I get up at 530 and leave the house at 6 for my hour commute. I always wonder/stress how it will be when we have a baby and how i will do with little sleep. You are very blesses that your mom is able to watch the girls from your home.
haha - you sound like my best friend. She was worrying about the same thing when we were talking about my days!
I agree, very blessed! I have an awesome mama!
You’re doing such an awesome job with everything, girl!!!
Thanks!
Love this! You are a busy busy lady!
Just reading about your days makes me tired. Enjoy your day off!!
I did - and I have another one tomorrow!
Sounds like you have it down to a science! The school where I teach is closed today because of the “Chiberia” cold conditions
LOL - me too! TOmorrow as well!
I always enjoy reading “day in the life” posts from other moms, and yours is especially interesting as a working mom of twins. So impressive! I am in
Posted before I was done…
I am in awe of how much you get done in a day and on such little sleep! You’re doing a great job Mama
haha, I don’t know how I function some days, that’s for sure!
You are amazing!! What a busy day. AND you’re going to school….you rock!
I do what I have to do! And then a lot of times crash on the couch right after the girls are in bed.
That’s exhausting! My favorite part: triple check that the door is locked
girl, you have no idea how scared I am that someone will bust into that door. Every single time I have someone trying to get in my room. Can you imagine one of my students walking in? Yikes.
I love this post because I already knew everything about this day, haha. And I giggled at the chores being done
lol! You’re on the inside track!
Wow - I don’t think I can complain about busy days anymore. You are supermom!
haha - as I always tell my husband “we can both be busy and tired. we don’t have to fight for the title!” I am sure your busy days are just as busy!!
You rock! I’m 41 and newly pregnant again after 2 years of trying. My almost 5 year old is very excited!! I’m trying to imagine sleepless nights and classroom pumping. If you can do it with two I think I can manage one!
Congratulations! IT will come back very quickly to you I am sure! My mom had my brother when was 42, and me when she was 39. I liked having an “older” set of parents!
I am currently visiting Siberia (aka Minnesota)-BRRR! Stay safe and warm!
Yikes - you stay warm too!
You are super mom, I now I have told you that before! So great hubby helps out too, Mike is a much saving grace to me too, bless our men!
Happy week to you! Frigid cold here too! Stay warm!
We picked good ones!
I love reading your day in the life posts! You really are a supermom!! Are the girls sleeping through the night after the dreamfeed? My twin boys are 6 weeks old today, and I’m praying for the day I can get 6 straight hours! I’m lucky if I get two hours right now!! I love your blog, thanks for sharing the insights of life as a working twin mommy!!
They are! We are probably going to eliminate the dream feed in the next month or so as well. Brooklyn will sleep until 6:45-7:30, depending on the day. Emerson is more of an early bird and will get up around 5 or 6, but then will go back to sleep for a while.
I remember the first time I got 7 straight hours of sleep. OMG it felt so so good!
I have so much respect for you, Chelsey. I’m mom to a four month old little guy and know how crazy it can be with just one. You’re a hero to those two beautiful girls! And high five to your super helpful husband too. I can totally relate to the wonderful surprise of having those chores done.
Just a quick question - do you have your girls on an organic formula? I’m curious since I know you’re conscious about what you eat yourself. I’m researching organic formula options since we’re about to start supplementing. Four months old and he’s already eating us out of house and home
We don’t. We have to get hypoallergenic formula because they’re sensitive to dairy, and that’s expensive enough as it is! Because we are supplementing a small amount, I’m not too concerned about it!
My goodness-just reading that makes me exhausted! You’re a supermom, Chelsey!
My god, I don’t know how to do it. My husband and I are starting fertility treatments knowing we could end up with multiples, and I’m scared! You’re an inspiration!
You won’t get more than you can handle! Good luck!
WOW! That’s an impressive day! My day starts at 4am and ends at 10:30pm, but I have 2 jobs and no babies. That pant shopping trip would have done me in! Once I am finally home for the night I am not leaving!
haha I used to be like that until I had kids. Now all of my errand running/gym going is done once they’re asleep for the night!
All I can say is wow.
Whew, I’m exhausted just reading about your day! You’re a superstar
Yes, I read you clearly Chelsey. My niece goes through a similar ritual every day ….. less one infant! Haaha. Although her toddler does get a ride in the morning to baby school which helps her out. Still rough with a 2 month old. Better (not necessarily easier tho) having kids young …. when us girls have all that energy!
Weather alert (for us) in Illinois …. tonight will be the coldest. Brutal temps. Harsh wind chill. Stay home. Be cozy. Drink hot tea. We are all doing that until Wednesday. Do not risk your life to travel anywhere. Keep pets safe and definitely warm also. We cover ours with soft blankies. They love it!
We are hunkering down and not going anywhere! We have the day off of school again tomorrow, so we will be in our jammies until Wednesday! Charlie loves a blanket overhim while he sleeps as well!
Thanks for this! I’m a teacher too and staying home with my 3 week old daughter (I go back to work in 3 weeks, sad!) and was wondering what a typical day looked like for a teacher. Question for you: Do you prop the girls up after their dream feed? Do they spit up afterwards at all?
Congrats on your baby girl! You’ll get into a rhythm quickly once you go back to work, I promise! We don’t prop them up. They’ve pretty much grown out of their reflux, except for Emerson who just constantly spits up. They usually don’t spit up. Sometimes Emerson will a little but she is constantly spitting up and it is just like a fountain out of the sides of her mouth. I used to be freaked out about them spitting up in their sleep, but they’re smart - they will instinctively move their head to the side!
you make me tired.
you truly are super momma!! and i can’t believe those windchills! school would for sure be cancelled - i think we get cancelled when itz -20 windchill!
Do you drink coffee?? Seriously, how do you do it?
I am a part-time teacher’s aide looking for a teaching position, and I nanny after work until 6-ish. I am EXHAUSTED by the end of the day, and do nothing but lay on the couch like a lazy bum all night. No kids- just two dogs.
I seriously don’t understand how working parents do it!! If I don’t get 8+ hours of sleep at night, I can barely stay awake the next day.
I’m subbing tomorrow and I am dreading having to wake up by 6!
I would love to hear more about your diet and how you feel since introducing meat into your diet. I don’t think I will ever go back to eating meat, but I am concerned about my constant fatigue…maybe it’s all in my head though
You are one admirable individual!!! You can do it all - it’s official
Oh yes, overtired babies are the toughest! That’s a tip I need to remember again for in a few months. I feel like I forgot everything!
Love the post, but could totally use an extra pic of the girls… they’re so sweet!!
You are the definition of super woman! Those ar two lucky girls!
I’m stressed enough thinking about doing it with one baby when I go back to work in March! You and your husband are my hero!
Question, have you found it really difficult to keep up with the nutritional needs of breastfeeding two babies? I’m only breastfeeding one and I’m starving all the time. Some days I feel like all I do is eat haha.
I did the same post today! I love hearing how others typical days are. You go mama! More power to ya, I only have one baby to deal with.
I agree! I hate pants shopping! There are so many variables!
You are amazing, mama! Of course, I look at your day and think “I’d die with that little sleep” but umm I guess we all do it when our kiddos are so little. I still get up at 5am but am able to go to bed much earlier now that he’s older. And, yes, overtired babies are the worst!
haha - don’t worry, you’ll be back in the no sleep mode soon enough! It’s so funny how someone who had to have at least 8 hours of sleep (me) could change so quickly. Next year will be so much better when I’m not tied to my pump, they’re sleeping through the night and not waking up at 5-6. Oh I can’t wait!
Impressive how to juggle it all but as a friend and I were discussing you forget the old life and just adjust and go with flow. P I teach 6th grade and the one time I forgot to lock the door at lunch a student was getting picked up early and ran into the room to get his cell phone. Thank god I was finishing up and had my cover on but I was so embarrassed. Of course, he told everyone and I had to have a talk with my class and explain its a natural part of life, etc. I still cringe thinking about it.
oh. my. gosh. I would die - DIE!
