confessions of a black friday shopaholic

November 27, 2010

Hi, my name is Chelsey and I am a Black Friday shopping addict.

It’s true — if you were wondering where in the world I went to, you might have immediately thought it was because I was savoring all the moments spent with my family. Or, you may have thought I fell into a two day Thanksgiving Day food induced coma.

While all of those may be true, the real reason is because I’ve been shopping like it’s my job (I kind of wish it was….).

On Thanksgiving Day, I set out to Walgreen’s to buy a five pound newspaper. I then took it upon myself to scavenge all of the different ads to find the best deals for shopping.

Because I like to buy myself presents — I mean, I like to buy others presents.

Crap, you got me. Really, I was most concerned about my own Christmas present at 4 AM when I stood in line at Best Buy in the freezing cold with the Husband. While the shopping did not go quite as planned, I still got an amazing present.

November 27, 2010 030

And he (the Husband) won’t let me open it for 28 more days. I feel like I’m in some kind of intense shopping retail therapy to see if I can really endure the temptation that lies in my guest room.

That baby better get wrapped up quick.

Another things we went shopping for? Christmas decor! We were without a Christmas tree, so we set out to get one — the space we had to put the tree isn’t very big, so we wanted something tall and slender. We found one at Target for $80, and I couldn’t be happier.

Although we spent more on the decorations for the tree than the tree itself, I think it turned out beautiful!

This picture doesn’t do it justice — I love fancy trees! I know that once we have kids it will be fun to put up ornaments from when we were younger, so I am taking these next few years as an opportunity to create something fun and elegant in our home. We added a few birch branches to it last night to complete the look.

I’m all about rustic decor, and a few birch branches were also added to the garland in the bay window — perfect for holiday food photography.

I hope your Thanksgiving was a great one — mine was spent laughing until I cried playing Scattergories with my family, with my dad being upset that the Husband and I are reigning champions (two nights in a row).

I wish I could say this morning I am relaxing, but that couldn’t be further from the truth. Off for more shopping… and you thought I was in rehab.

Question: Do you participate in Black Friday shopping?

The rebel product line is great. My hubby has one and lots of the gadgets and absolutely loves his camera. You’ll definitely enjoy it (when you can open it). ;)

I don’t usually go out on Black Friday but did head out for 2 hours late last night. No lines, decent prices, and I finished all my shopping. Yay!

I can’t handle BF shopping…I was going to try it out for the first time yesterday, but I woke up, ate breakfast and then got a massive stomach ache, so I think that was my subconscious telling me not to go….so I didn’t :D

I wish I did, though - I saw lots of good deals for Nikons! I really want one, but I can’t imagine shelling out even $500!! I’m the biggest cheapo ever! Glad your BF was successful and I can’t wait to see the gorgeous pics you’ll take w/ that camera!

the original plan was to get a nikon d3100 - but the lady in front of me got the last one!

I’ve never done the Black Friday thing… I don’t think I could handle the crowds. I get claustrophobic in Wal-Mart on a regular day ;-) How exciting about the camera though!!!

Your decorations look great! We use birch branches/logs to decorate our house also :)

I’m VERY jealous of the camera, because I basically look for deals everyday! I wish Canada had Black Friday…instead we have Boxing Day, which is not nearly as good as Black Friday. My hubby happens to be in Florida right now, and I know he went shopping…but all he told me was that he got me something ‘small’…small could be good though! lol

In the past I have always gone to do Black Friday shopping but this year I didn’t make it! I have actually pretty much finished with all of my Christmas shopping for friends and family so I didn’t want the temptation to spend $$. So glad you had a good time and your Christmas decorations look great!!

I’m digging the tree. And the snowflake bowl! Very cute…

Ahhh congrats on the camera!! You’ll love it :) I didn’t go Black Friday shopping this year, but I have been in previous years. I’m never hardcore enough to go before 9 or so though!!

Love the bowl and the birch tree. I miss those trees.

I am impressed with your shopping fortitude - cold and all. I can think of nothing that would have gotten me out there.

My husband and I are the worst shoppers ever - we both hate it (well, unless it’s for food) so I was happy having to work yesterday and steer clear of the stores! :)

Oh, I just saw this recipe on another blog and thought of you! http://www.candidrd.com/2010/11/polenta-stuffing.html

I am all about great deals, but can’t handle lines and crowds so I don’t do the Black Friday shopping thing. Not worth it to me, but somehow I still get jealous about other people’s deals. ;-)
Your Christmas tree is gorgeous!!

Ah….Chelsey. You are full of surprises.
I had you pegged for the type of gal who has most of her shopping done in September (0:

I am so happy for you, you REBEL girl. And maybe a bit jealous. I was looking at them today in Sam’s club.
I have noticed you seem to be taking more of an interest in your photos of late. You have talent! I think it hit me when you spent the quality time with the bok choy, but the Spoons post certainly deserves applause in terms of photos.

Your tree is beautiful…maybe when you have the kids (and strike it rich and live in a super big house) you can have two trees. Growing up there was the kid tree (rel, traditional and full of my ornaments. One for every year! You should see my collection. Charlie brown, smurfs, strawberry shortake. I treasure them o this day. Then the “living room tree” (fake, and themed). It was so much fun!

I always look forward to your comments - I am full of surprises… I have many layers. :)

I am definitely getting more “into” my photography - it is so much fun! Thanks for the kind compliments! :)

I definitely want to be a 2 tree family some day… I doubt we’re going to strike it rich, but we do want a big farm house some day!

Are you kinda sad at all that it isn’t a real tree?

Reply

Not so much - with evergreens my eyes water and I sneeze constantly, so I’m happy not to have that happen for an entire month! :)

We don’t have Black Friday here in Canada but I wish!!! I love shopping and would definitely be one of those crazies out insanely early and waiting in line.

Your tree is so pretty! We have a fake one too and I love it. They’re super convenient, look fantastic, AND you don’t have to kill a precious tree. :)

I wish it were because I was concerned about killing a tree, but its because if we did have a real one, I would be sneezing for an entire month! :)

Thanks for making me smile! Somehow I found your blog, think it was from a comment you left on someone else’s blog (possibly “How Sweet It Is”) yeah, I think that was it. Anyway, I couldn’t imagine how or why you were putting your food next to the birch tree. I could almost see your husband hiding behind the tree, holding the cookie for you, hahah! Thank you for clearing that one up for me in this blog. You will SO love that camera for blogging and what not. We are considering the same camera for our daughter, who is also a blogger, but we’re trying to take it easy this Christmas, rough times! Thank you for the recipes and laughs! Have a wonderful day, and congrats! Congrats on loving your husband and not being afraid to say so!
