31 weeks pregnant with twins

July 30, 2013

How is it that it has been a week already? Gosh, these days are just flying by lately. I always hit my “new week” on Saturdays, so right now I’m sitting at 31.5 weeks and already looking forward to hitting 32 weeks on Saturday! My mom swears she thinks I’m going to go until 37-38 weeks, but I keep telling her my intuition is telling me I will not be making it that far. I’ll be happy to make it another 3.5-4.5 weeks!

Weight Gained: I think I gained quite a bit this past week to be honest with you. I have been STARVING!! The girls are going into another growth spurt (according to BabyCenter), and I have been feeling it.

Symptoms:

Contractions…. A few of you shared concern last week about the amount of contractions I get, but I assure you – this is completely normal for a twin pregnancy at this point. The main thing is that they aren’t consistent or rhythmic. However, I am going to talk to my OB next week because some of them have been pretty painful lately – mostly at night. The other night I actually woke up because one hurt so bad. I’m sure she’ll tell me to just make sure they don’t become consistent and to call if they do.

Hand pains…. Sounds weird, right? I think I’m developing some pregnancy related carpel tunnel (which happens in about 25% of pregnancies I’ve read). When I wake up in the morning, my hands are SO stiff and the palms of my hands tingle and hurt. It takes a good hour or two before I can actually use my hands well (ie: gripping things, writing, etc.). What a nice surprise at the end of this pregnancy. ;)

Hungry!

Ridiculous amount of bathroom trips… This one is actually pretty annoying. I go to the bathroom, and then fifteen minutes later I feel like I have to go again – so I do… and um yeah, there’s nothing there. Gaaaaah.

Heavy Belly…. It gets increasingly heavier as the days go by. In fact, it actually hurts to turn over in bed these days. If I’m out and about, it’s easiest if I wear my belly support band to help hold it up!

Movement: They typically have their times when they move around every day, and yesterday these two scared their mama all morning because they usually are kicking away when I wake up in the morning. Instead, I didn’t feel them moving around for hours! Apparently they are on a new sleeping schedule… or they are just running out of room. Most of their movements these days are much more pronounced when they are active.

Food Cravings:  No real cravings.

Food Aversions: Nothing.

Sleep: Other than waking up 2-3 times a night to go to the bathroom, sleep has been pretty good. I’ve been trying to sleep in until 7 and take a nap every afternoon – it’s been going well! :)

Stretch Marks? A few little ones finally popped up. They’re on the underside of my belly, so they’re hard to see right now.  Thankfully they aren’t huge and aren’t too noticeable, so I think they’ll fade pretty quickly after my belly eventually goes down.

Miss Anything? This week I’ve been wanting a glass of sangria SO bad.

Looking forward to: Going shopping today to get the rest of the stuff for the girls! We had our last shower on Sunday, so I’m making a big shopping trip today with my mom to get the rest of the stuff we truly need. Thankfully between gift cards and a few returns, we aren’t breaking the bank. I can’t wait to buy their bedding too!

I’m also excited for our next growth ultrasound next Tuesday. I’m estimating these girls will each be over four pounds by then!

Belly Button in or out? Half in, half out!

Happy or moody most of the time? Mostly happy. I was in a little bit of a funk Saturday and then Sunday morning, but I snapped out of that pretty quickly.

New Baby Items: We got a lot of generous gifts from the Husband’s family at our shower on Sunday, but like I said earlier, I’m making another haul today to get the rest of the items we need. I also have found I can’t get out of Target without buying these two an outfit. It’s a horrible habit.

Exercise: Rolling over in bed. Seriously, hardest workout ever.

Note for bedding…you don’t need the crib padding on the side. Really just some cute sheet sets (and at least three or four!) are all you really need for bedding. I bought all this cute bedding and used NONE of it. Went to waste. Would rather have put the money to other needs or other cute room decorations. PS - when are you ever on google chat anymore. I miss you!!!!

I’m not going to get the bumpers - they’re a waste! I got the breathable mesh bumpers for when they’re actually in their cribs. I’m buying cute sheets and crib skirts and a quilt. Hopefully they’ll be able to use the quilt when they’re in a toddler bed since it’s that size!

PS - I’m barely ever on my computer lately lol! But I promise I’ll look for you every time!

I never bought a traditional bumper because of the risk of SIDS, but little Hunter is a mover at night so I ended up getting a breathable one. Works great! ;)

Good advice! Though I got suckered in and CUSTOM MADE (who DOES that?!) bedding and bumpers. We actually got a lot of use out of them (Hailey was a roly poly and would have been bruised up without them) and still use them, but probably because I refuse to admit I went overboard with the bumper thing ;)

hahaha I love this. I mean, I guess I went a little crazy too because I’m a pottery barn kids snob and HAD to have our bedding from there. So worth it!

cleaneatingchelsey July 30, 2013 at 5:11 pm

We got breathable ones too - my sister bought a traditional bumper and never even used it!

As a twin mama to be at exactly the same point as you (literally - ill be 32 wks on Saturday too!) I am in the same boat with the contractions… and its been that way for a loooong time now. Our uteruses are working hard to house these babies! Do you have the ‘full term’ app for timing them? If not, it’s really helpful in establishing exact timing, sometimes I’m having less than I think.

Take care and keep up the great work with growing your girls!

cleaneatingchelsey July 30, 2013 at 6:54 am

Yes! I have been using that to track them if I ever get a lot at a time!

Reply

Cara July 30, 2013 at 9:24 am

I have that app and I’m a mo/di mommy to be (with girls) just a week behind you girls. I turn 31 weeks on Saturday:) I’m so happy to have found this blog Chelsey. It’s hard to find twin blogs and it’s so nice to have someone tell their experience. Plus, being so close behind you it’s a nice comparison because I keep getting the “you’re too small and haven’t gained enough weight” comments from friends but my doctors are happy with our progress so I’M HAPPY:) Since you and I are right around the same poundage gained, I know I’m FINE!! Haha, seems silly!

Like you I’m getting and have been getting lots of BH contractions, pressure and all the fun symptoms you have! Oh the joys of pregnancy!

cleaneatingchelsey July 30, 2013 at 9:27 am

:) Congrats on your girls Cara!!! I think every pregnancy is so different and people everywhere have this mentality that you HAVE TO GAIN ALL THE WEIGHT in the world in order to have healthy multiples. Ummmmm nope! ;) Just listening to my body over here!

I’m a little ahead of all you gals, will be 34 weeks on Thursday. I will say the contractions for me have picked up since first starting. I’d say most of the time I can have anywhere from 3-4 an hour. I wish I would have thought about finding a phone app! I just used my note pad on my phone and then I also put a dash and note if I have back pain during or stomach pains during (which they aren’t to often as of yet but they do happen at least once a day). I even had one day last week they got patterned and kind of painful, I started to cry and told my husband we may need to get ready to go to the hospital and then they just stopped, crazy. But, every week I get closer to 35 *almost there* I breath another sigh of relief because my home hospital doesn’t have a nicu and they transfer out any mom that hasn’t made it to 35 (or who is having pregnancy complications). Good luck to all you gals!

Your belly is so cute! I’m glad it sounds like the girls are doing well in their and continuing to grow. Does the doctor say anything about the babies coming sooner with the contractions you are having or is that just something that always occurs with twin pregnancies?

Carrying around two babies is hard work! I’m feeling shattered just thinking about it!

I can’t believe you are already almost at 32 weeks!! At what week did you have your first shower? We are trying to decide now and I want to ensure that I am not too uncomfortable & can enjoy - plus want to have minimal risk of being on bed rest if need be!

I think my first shower was at 26 weeks? I was afraid of having our second shower this late too, but it was totally fine!

You look great, Chelsey! …..those moms and their intuitions :) (I mean our moms) My mom had several of those when I was pregnant with Jackson- she was right on all of them. I don’t know if that should make you feel at ease or on edge- I’m sure you’re heart is really getting ready to meet those girls!

I had the numbness in my hands and arms too with my twin pregnancy. It was miserable and eventually attributed to them sitting on various nerves. Luckily for me it went away after delivery. You look amazing and are doing a wonderful job carrying these babies! Good luck.

It’s kind of blowing my mind that your girls will be here so soon! I feel like it was just a little while ago that you announced you were pregnant, and now you’re almost a momma. It might not be a good time to ask considering how cumbersome the bump must be getting, but I know a lot of women who say they really loved being pregnant. Will you miss it?

It’s so crazy to think they could be with you in just a month! You are looking beautiful with your baby belly. I remember my belly feeling a bit more heavy at the end, but I’m sure nothing compared to carrying around twins!

Thanks for posting! I’m a fellow 5th grade teacher and I stumbled across your blog this morning doing research for a website I created. It has week by week pregnancy pictures from moms all around the world. Many moms-to-be find it reassuring, or, at least, interesting!

We’d love to have you share your pictures, if you are willing. Or, if you just want to check out the site for yourself, I have included the link above (I think it attaches to my name, yes?). Either way, I hope you are feeling wonderful and I hope to hear from you soon!

Yay for being in the 30′s! So exciting. What fun stuff did ya get from the shower?

I have my 1st one this weekend, and I am so excited! We also finally got a crib, wahoo!

I’m sorry you’re having carpal tunnel, I think I have gotten it a bit too. Major yucko

You look great!!

As for contractions at night, make sure you drink plenty plenty plenty of water through the day. Last summer I was pregnant (with just one!) and my midwife told me 8oz every hour at a minimum.

Hand pains are something I not familiar with! I need to quit reading about pregnant women’s paisn and troubles or I might not ever convince myself to take the plunge ;-)
You look so cute prego! I love following your pregnancy because my brother in law’s fam just had twins. They were born at 32 weeks in May and are doing awesome! 2.5 lbs each and now are around 9!

OMG….the carpal tunnel….ugh. I’m almost 27 weeks (with one, lol) and I developed carpal tunnel last summer. It was fine for a LONG time and as soon as I hit 8 weeks, BAM, hit me like a truck! It’s awful. It’s the extra blood volume in the body, compressing the nerves in the wrists. I use wrist braces at night, but a hot and cold bath work too. It should stop after the girls are here! Can’t believe you’re so close to the end…wow!

I’ve experienced the “heavy belly” symptom the past two days (I’m at 36 wks with 1 baby) & it is truly painful to roll over in bed! I was about to Google it before I stumbled upon your post. Though I do feel bad for you, I’m glad I’m not the only one! ;) You look great!

If you are on your feet a lot during the day, I’d look into a support band. I wore mine while I was out and about today, and while I could barely walk by the time I was done, I can only imagine how much sooner that would have happened if I had not been wearing my band!

I cannot believe you’re reaching the end of your pregnancy! I’m sure you are so anxious to meet those little ones already! I have a friend who had horrible carpel tunnel in her wrists during her first pregnancy. She is pregnant with her 2nd and due in early september, and so far, no carpel tunnel. Pregnancy can be so odd! Can’t wait to hear about all the goodies you pick up at Target. That place is seriously the death of me..why is it so hard to walk out without making at least 1 impulse buy?!

I have the pregnancy carpel tunnel too and it is so trippy not to be able to feel your fingers! Mine started as tingles but progressed to where I can’t feel anything on the tips of my fingers. It’s so weird. Mine started at about 34 weeks and I’m officially 4 days overdue today! Ugh get this little guy out so I can get back to normal! :)

You look so cute. I can’t believe how close you are to meeting your girls. Enjoy these last few weeks. I wish I did more, once the girls are here life gets a little crazy. :)

I had a ton of contractions at the end, but one of the things that gave me a sign to call the doctor was cramping. So if you get any cramping that causes you not to be able to move call!! That’s all. :)

I am so excited for you. I am actually jealous I want to do it all over again!!

Reply

cleaneatingchelsey July 31, 2013 at 5:13 pm

:) Although I can’t wait for them to get here, I totally get what you mean!

I have only had cramping a few times, although it hasn’t been crippling. But I’ll be sure to call my doctor if it happens again

I’m going to second the recommendation for wrist braces! I tend to curl my wrists under me while I sleep and the braces, though annoying at times, make a huge difference. I’m also going to suggest cutting a pair of old socks (cut the toes to slip it onto your wrist and put a thumb hole in the heel) to wear under them b/c they aren’t the easiest to clean and getting a rash is not fun. Good luck!
