the real food diet (GIVEAWAY)

March 1, 2011

Sometimes, I hate following recipes from cookbooks.

In fact, I rarely use cookbooks.

I’ve actually made it a personal goal of mine to make a cookbook recipe at least once a week — I made that goal in January. I think I’ve actually done it once.

No wait, it never even happened.

Let me tell you what I can’t stand about cookbooks.

I have to change everything. I sub out the chicken for tofu, the cheese sauce for nutritional yeast “cheese”, the cous cous for quinoa. By the time it’s all said and done, I’ve made my own recipe.

So when Dr. Josh Axe contacted me to see if I wanted to try out his new cookbook The Real Food Diet — I was a bit hesitant.

I think I asked a million questions: “Is it gluten free friendly?” “Is it vegetarian friendly?” “Will I actually use this book or are the recipes so complicated it will collect dust on my recipe book shelf?”

The answers: yes, yes, and YES!

While this cook book is not necessarily a cookbook that is 100% vegetarian, all the recipes are geared towards a clean eating diet — or as Dr. Axe refers to it as “the real food diet”.

One thing that I loved about this book is that it is geared towards people who are just beginning to explore clean eating. Dr. Axe provides a very reader-friendly introduction which is geared towards explaining why whole foods is so great for you.

My favorite part of the introduction is this “food matching” guide. The little icons are located on recipe pages and allow you to pick recipes based on how you’re feeling (sick, tired, etc.) or who you are cooking for (kids). To make this even more reader friendly, I would have put together an index for the icons so readers could easily find what they are looking for.

This book has a plethora of dishes in every category: breakfast, main entrees, side dishes, snacks, desserts — it has it all!

Some recipes I am dying to try:

One of my favorite parts of this book is how it does not heavily rely on flours or gluten for any of its recipes. In fact, the desserts are right up my alley — raw cheesecake, pumpkin pie, and chocolate mousse (just to name a few). All recipes are nut and/or date based which I love.

There is even a recipe for homemade ketchup — made with raisins (?!?!!?). You all know I have to try that as I am addicted to my ketchup.

Lucky for you, Dr. Axe has also offered for one of my lucky readers to win this cookbook.

I say lucky for you not only because this cook book is amazing, but he’s not too hard on the eyes either. I think he should be on The Doctors, no?

There are 4 ways you can enter this giveaway. Please leave each entry as a different comment.

You are killing me by making me name a cookbook! If Mama Pea’s cookbook was out, I’d name that one but alas, it’s not so I’m going to have to go with the original Betty Crocker Cookbook. The peach cobbler is a classic!

My favorite cook-book is actually my only one! It’s the Pioneer Woman’s Cookbook that my boyfriend got for me last year after I started reading her blog. While she doesn’t have too many meat-less or gluten free recipes, the way it was written and her sense of humor are great!

I do not have a favorite cookbook :( …yet. I am recently gluten and lactose free, and a new blog reader. After years of being tortured by foods I loved and much much poking and prodding by doctors, a simple blood test confirmed that I am in fact plagued by the digestive genetics of my family and am also Celiac (along with a cousin and aunt) . Within the total re-farb of my diet I also discovered my lactose intolerance, being 18 years old and a freshman in college, I didn’t even know where to begin. Confused, I thought the easiest route was to “ignore” my stomach pains and eating problems. Great idea right? Two years later, I’m self skipping meals and going days without eating (hey being hungry was alot better than pains I would get!) Now, I find myself a daily reader of your blog, cant wait for your posts, and have already read through months of your stories! I must admit that it was my wonderful ladyfriend who only showed me your blog a few weeks ago, but my life has changed! no more skipping meals, no more stomach pains! And your food is delicious! I am beginning to understand how long this path is that I’ve started down and I can only imagine how hard blogging is, but it is really appreciated and it really helps! Thank you :) I’m going to go cook something!

Reply

cleaneatingchelsey March 3, 2011 at 2:50 pm

Wow - I usually don’t respond to “giveaway” comments because I don’t want to screw up the results, but I had to respond to this one Kyle. I am so sorry for all the trouble you went through. Finding out about allergies can be very frustrating, and I can relate. Those pains when eating weren’t worth it to me either at some points, but playing around and taking control of your own health is worth it. I’m so glad that you are feeling better and loving my blog!
