brooklyn and emerson: 4 month update

January 7, 2014

A third of a year? When did that happen?

It’s no surprise these two keep me busy all the live long day. They are beginning to do more and more with each passing day – I know I’ll say it every month, but this past month was my favorite!!

I have a ton of pictures on my camera – super cute pictures – and my computer decided last night would be the night it was not going to recognize my USB cord for my camera. Laaame! Anyone know how to fix that?

Anyway, you’re left with a few pictures I had on my phone!

Both girls are in an “in between” stage with their clothes. Their 0-3 month clothing is starting to get a little tight on them, but most 3-6 month clothing is still a little big. I’m having fun going through all our storage bins and getting ready for the next wave of clothing that they will wear!

We went into the doctor for their 4 month wellness check and shots, and these girlies are plump as can be. Look at the difference between 2 and 4 months!

  2 months

4 months

Emerson 9 pounds 3 ounces 13 pounds 3 ounces
Brooklyn 9 pounds 0 ounces 13 pounds 6 ounces

Brooklyn is also an entire half inch longer than her sister at this point. She is going to be tall like her daddy! I’m actually surprised that Brooklyn took the lead in the weight department – she’s always been a bit behind despite the fact that she weighed more when she was born.

Emerson

Emerson still wins the award for Happiest Baby in the World (although now her sister is right on her tail to tie her!). This lady smiles all the live long day – EVEN when she is crying. The other night we had a baaaaad night trying to go to sleep, and every time I went into her room to calm her down, the tears would immediately stop and she would squeal and smile. Ugh, what to do with her!!

December 28, 2013 034

Eat

This one loves her food. There are times where she will eat around seven ounces in a sitting, but she typically drinks anywhere from 4-6 oz at a time. There have been days where she eats over 30 oz which just seems crazy to me, but she typically drinks 24-28 oz in a 24 hour period. We are eating 6-7 times a day, typically 3 hours in between each feeding during the day. At night Emerson typically goes 7-8 hours without eating (but that doesn’t necessarily mean she’s sleeping. ;) )

We had to start supplementing with formula over the last few weeks, and Emerson would definitely rather have breast milk. She is not a fan of formula, but will drink it because she’s my chubby monkey.  Girlfriend also still always needs a bib on – she is my spit up queen!

Play

Emme has gained a lot of new skills during play time this month! She is truly “cooing” now – before it was more of a squeal/scream. Now that she can “talk”, Chatty Cathy never stops! Emerson has also taken an interest in trying to roll from her back to her stomach. She gets about half way before she stops, but it will only be a matter of time before she gets herself all the way over! At that point, she will be screaming on her stomach I’m sure, because she is not a fan of tummy time. Emerson also always wants to be sitting up now – forget laying on the floor, that’s boring! She will lay on my legs and use her core to pull her head halfway up, and if I hold onto her arms, she pushes herself all the way into a standing position. Lord help me when she starts moving!

Emerson 4 months

Emerson still loves her Kick and Play Piano as well as her Oball her Uncle Matthew got her for Christmas.

Sleep

Oh sleep….. Emerson and sleep has been the bane of my existence this past month.

I explained last month that she is not a very restful sleeper. That is definitely still true! We typically still get one really good nap during the day (typically the morning nap) and then the rest of Emme’s naps are cat naps. I will typically try to get her to go back to sleep by popping that pacifier back in her mouth, and sometimes it works. I have learned, however, that I cannot make eye contact with her during this time or else she thinks it’s time to play! This one just cracks me up. I don’t fight it anymore and just go with it though – she’s happy when she wakes up so I guess she is just a cat napper!

Emerson 4 months 2

Brooklyn

This girl cracks me up all the live long day. She is so spunky, yet so so sweet. She is still a ball of energy, but she has calmed down a little over the past month. She actually will stop to snuggle with you now if she wants to! Before, forget it – she wanted to look everywhere at everything! I actually brought up to the doctor yesterday that I was concerned about her muscle tone because she’s so floppy still. After checking her out, he said she’s perfectly fine – just a little top heavy (aka: she has a large noggin. ;) )

Eat

Brooklyn is also eating around 24-28 oz a day. This past month Brooklyn has been getting a lot of the frozen milk in my stash.  She seems to do okay with it, while Emerson does not. Apparently since I was still eating dairy at the time I was freezing milk, Emme gets gassy and so cranky. Thankfully Brooklyn takes it like a champ. She doesn’t like the taste of frozen milk though. When we went out of town last week, I had to supplement with formula, and she LOOOOOVED it. Seriously, she guzzled it down every time! Despite a formula bottle here and there, Brooklyn is still mainly drinking breast milk.

Play

This girl loves to play. She’s happy by herself, with her sister, or with someone talking to her. Really, she’s happy all the time! Brooklyn still loves her Kick and Play piano as well as grabbing onto just about every toy she can find.  She is still stubborn as all get out and typically only looks to her right when she plays.  Brooklyn has been trying so so hard to roll herself from her back to her tummy. She’s actually come pretty darn close a few times! Rolling from her tummy to her back is not the cool thing to do though. She can do it, but she chooses not to! When Brooklyn “stands” up, she bounces alllll the live  long time. We need to get that jumper out for her pretty soon – as soon as she can hold that head in place!

Brooklyn 4 months 2

Sleep

Nothing to be said – seriously! Brooklyn rocks at sleeping! She takes great naps (usually 2-3 longer ones and a short cat nap at the end of the day) and goes down easily at night. Brooklyn gets a dream feed around 10-11 and would probably sleep later than she does now because we tend to wake her up around 6 when Emerson wakes up so that we don’t have to get up multiple times to feed them! Brooklyn sleeps well, but if she gets overtired… you better watch out!

  Brooklyn 4 months 3
I have a feeling this month is going to bring a lot of new skills and milestones for these little ladies – I can’t wait to continue to watch them grow!

Chels, I just loved this update in so many ways! Both of your girls are just adorable, and I’m so happy to hear they seem to be sleeping so well! Right around 3-4 months is when everything just seemed to “click” with Hunter - he slept better, was more interactive, and ate better. And I swear it just keeps getting better and better! And seriously, Emerson looks SO much like you, and Brooklyn looks SO much like her daddy - just crazy!

Your girls are gorgeous!! And so bright-eyed! Have you considered a baby wedge for Emerson to lie on that would elevate her head above her stomach about 30 degrees when she is on her back? They work wonders for our babies with her spit up issues! (You lie the whole child on the wedge, before you get any nightmares about baby neck cricks!!)

I love them. PS - I found that all the transitions we had to make were SO much easier than I anticipated. In fact, Em slept WAY better in her crib than in our room. Go figure.

Isn’t every stage amazing? My favorite thing BY FAR about being a mom is getting a front row seat to watch Hailey develop her personality and getting to learn a little more about who she is everyday. It’s incredible.

B & E are as cute as it gets and I love that they are so different with their personalities. Thanks so much for swinging by for an update- love them!

Thanks for the three month update! I miss your posts, too, but I’m glad things are moving along pretty well! I love when babies really start to notice things, too, and interact more. It’s the best thing to watch their faces and reactions!

So glad you posted… and so happy for you that Brooklyn is mellowing out…hopefully that means a couple seconds of Mommy time added to your day. Yes, every second counts!

Hi Chelsey -
For Emerson’s crib when you transition her there… these “Sheet Savers” will help keep the immensely! I was so glad I had them for Garrett’s cribs.

My 3 month old spits up ALL the time too. I bought sheet savers - its a pad that goes on top of the sheet and catches all the spit up. They’re cheap and so easy to change!

They are just two little beauties!! Gah in the sleep department for me still sometimes. I love how Nia is not the greatest night sleeper and my mom tells me when Nia is around a year that neither was I when I was that age. Ugh, I could have used the heads up sooner! Thanks, Mom! haha

Reply

cleaneatingchelsey January 7, 2014 at 10:36 am

LOL - apparently I was a great sleeper all the time, and so was John. I don’t know what Emerson’s deal is. She always wants to wake up to PLAY. My pediatrician told me to ignore her unless she’s screaming. I can do that!

Brittany (Healthy Slice of Life) January 7, 2014 at 10:45 am

Oh yay an update on the precious girls!!! I still get the biggest kick that two twin girls can be so different so early on. They both sound sweet as can be and I love seeing the comparisons. I’m sure I’ll be doing the same thing when baby girl is born in May. I’ve been spoiled by a good sleeper and worry I’m not lucky enough to get two… we shall see!!

Do the girls notice/interact with each other at all? Do you see any sign of a ‘twin’ bond?

Reply

cleaneatingchelsey January 7, 2014 at 10:49 am

They actually JUST started to interact with each other. A few weeks ago Emerson would notice Brooklyn and start to smile at her and laugh, but Brooklyn was in her own little world and didn’t notice Emerson. Now, if I put them in their Bumbo seats, they’ll sit and smile and talk to each other. They also will usually calm down if I put them near each other!
