overnight oats tutorial (video blog)

June 22, 2011

My video blogs are kind of like Pringles. Once you pop, the fun don’t stop!

I had quite an ordeal trying to set up my kitchen for this one, which I tried to explain in the video, but I’m glad I made it work.

In this video, I talk about how I make my overnight oats. However, I can’t take all the credit. The way I make my oats originated from Kath and Katie, so credit must be given to them!

I hope you enjoyed my camera awkwardness once again.

Question: What is your favorite way to prepare your oats?

I have a recipe on my site for overnight chocolate brownie protein oats. Super easy and that’s my fave way.

Or wait, I use oats in all my raw/nobake vegan cookie dough balls. THAT’S my fave way to use oats :)

I’m such a convert. I used to like the easy peasy throw ‘em in the microwave oats eater, but now I like them on the stovetop with vanilla or chocolate silk light. so delish and thick!

Another awesome video! I’ve only tried overnight oats once, and I didn’t cook them before letting them soak overnight…this way that you show sounds WAY better, I need to try them that way. My favorite way to make oats is just the old fashioned way on the stovetop!

I love this! I’ve actually never made overnight oats…I feel like that’s a sin in blogger world haha. I made oats this morning (normal way) with banana slices, peanut butter, cinnamon, and a splash of unsweetened vanilla almond milk- it was fabulous!

I need to try the vegan version of overnight oats using chia seeds. I’m not a big fan of the yogurt kind, and I’ve heard this one is better.

My favorite way to prep oats is to make steel cut oats on the stovetop and add in half a banana and an egg white. Argh, now I’m craving oats… again.

How awesome is it that you changed outfits just for US…. pretty darn awesome! :) I loved watching this video for quite a few reasons but find it quite funny that you and my sister have something in common. She hates the sound of a fork in a pan and especially a fork on teeth. Drives her crazy!!!!! (so I may or may not have done it on ‘accident’ quite a lot growing up) hahaha!

Great video! Thanks for explaining it because I never quite understood how you made them. I like doing my oats on the stovetop with frozen blueberries and raspberries (I will be using fresh now that they are in season and because I just picked a gallon of blueberries!!!). I also add at least 1/4 cup chopped walnuts! It gives it a great crunch. I drizzle with honey before I serve it. Yum!

okay you are way too cute! i also have to thank you a bunch for doing this particular video because i see EVERYONE eating these overnight oats and hadn’t yet ventured to make them myself. not gonna lie, i usually just use instant packets and do the micro-bit. i add a ton of water and cook them longer, they seem to fluff up pretty well but i don’t think i’m getting the full ‘growing’ potential so i wanted to do the overnight oats thing but really am super lame. so thank you, the step by step visuals have helped a ton! :)

I eat ovenight oats all the time, but I usually just mix together equal parts of oats, milk, and Greek yogurt with 1/2 a mashed banana and stick it in the fridge overnight. Then I top with nut butter and sprinkle with chia seeds in the morning. I’m definitely going to try your method though because I LOVE volume!!

LOVE IT!! I loooove when you do vlogs! :D Katie’s trick is my fave!! I still usually do hot oats on the stovetop in the morning, but when I’m feeling like overnight oats, I go straight to Katie’s method! And haha the Banana Guard shout-out made me laugh!! They’re so cool ;)

I’ll have to try your version of overnight oats soon. I’ve only made the overnight oats that you just soak in liquid without cooking them and I wasn’t a fan! Your videos are always so fun and I enjoy watching them! ;)

I’ve never cooked my overnight oats…I use all the same ingredients and such except I just mix everything together and put it in the fridge. I dig it that way. ;)

Any kind is fine - thick cut, rolled, oats, or quick cook oats.

Pretty new to your blog! :) I used to eat overnight oats all the time but then when I started cooking it stove-top, I couldn’t go back to overnight oats since it wasn’t as creamy or voluminous, as you say. Your method seems like a great option! :)

I love your hair, by the way! :) The cut looks really good!

Thank you so much for sharing. I usually soak the oats over night with cinnamon, bee pollen and flaxseed and then heat them up in the microwave and then i add my toppings. I am trying your method tonight and it already looks really good. Like the video.
