chocolate protein blueberry oatmeal

August 11, 2011

I have been hungry lately. Like, insanely hungry. In fact, last night as I was scrounging through all of the cabinets looking for just one more snack, I had already decided that I couldn’t wait until breakfast. I already had my meal planned out for the morning.

There are a few reasons why I think I could be hungrier than normal – one being my massive muscles increasing in size by the second. **flexes biceps**. The other being my thyroid medication being increased. Holy hunger! I guess it’s a good thing since an increase in thyroid medication means my metabolism is being revved up.

I surely would not want to ignore it.

So on the breakfast plan this morning was some protein oats to get my stomach nice and full.

I started with a base of voluminous overnight oats, with 1 scoop of chocolate Sun Warrior mixed in.

I always reach a conundrum when it comes to oatmeal toppings. There are just too many possibilities. Sometimes I go overload and top it with everything and anything I can find in my fridge.

Other times, I like to keep it simple – like this morning.

August 11, 2011 014
Blueberries are looking mighty fine right now, wouldn’t you agree? That was my deciding factor – that or if one must eat a 2.5 pound box by herself, she has to eat at least 1 cup of blueberries a day so they won’t go bad. Don’t mind if I do.

August 11, 2011 010
And since we’re keeping it simple around here this morning, I wouldn’t have wanted to mess it up by using anything but some of the best peanut butter around.

August 11, 2011 015

Oatmeal that tastes like a chocolate milk shake? Don’t mind if I do!

Chocolate Protein Blueberry Oatmeal (serves 1)

The only thing that made this better? Registering for the 2011 Foodbuzz Festival while eating it!

Would you know it that I still wasn’t full after this almost 30 grams of protein breakfast? I suppose snack time will be coming very soon today!

Question: What do you try to incorporate more into your diet when you have insatiable hunger?

I definitely eat lots more protein, like peanut butter and my granola bars as snacks!

I also LOVE eggs! When I know I won’t be able to eat my snack right at 10am, I usually have eggs with my oatmeal in the morning- and a big glass of milk!

I try to amp up protein and fiber to stay full – hence my breakfast of greek yogurt and Kashi GoLean. :)

What kind of thyroid condition do you have? I have hypo…just diagnosed about 6 weeks ago. I started taking Synthroid and am a little frusterated by the whole thing…staying away from Dr. Google is helping. :)

hypothyroid – I actually just posted a little bit more about it in my latest post. It is kind of frustrating because I hate taking medication!

I try to incorporate more protein– and FATS! I’m always amazed at how much staying power adding half an avocado to my meal adds!

Reply

cleaneatingchelsey August 11, 2011 at 9:48 am

I agree – fats and protein definitely help me!

Yum! That looks awesome. If I’m really hungry, the only thing that helps is more food haha.

Protein is always eaten more by me if I have hunger pains! That oatmeal sounds perfect! I love blueberries this time of year :)

I have the same hunger problem right now! I am trying to add more protein into my meals and making sure I eat every 3 hours to curb any hunger!

Faith @ For the Health of It August 11, 2011 at 8:30 am

Protein usually helps me curb of tons of snackage. Problem is, I usually only remember this *after* a cup of cereal, a chunk of chocolate and a couple chips…oops!

I hate when medication is switched or altered. I don’t like taking it in the first place and then when it sends me for a loop, I never know quite how to feel :( …..At least it is getting your metabolism is working like crazy! YAY for that! …… Simple and delicious oatmeal! YUM :)

Aine @ Something to Chew Over August 11, 2011 at 8:35 am

Yum! Looks great :)

I need a lot of fibre and protein to stay full. So I have oatmeal with nuts and fruit, hummus with crudites, wholegrain toast with almond butter…If I’m jsut feeling snacky I like to have popcorn as it seems like a lot of food!

Thyroid medication? Did I miss something? (or I’m just super nosy :p)
I find lots of protein satisfies me, and if that fails – a giant apple. So much of the time I’m really just thirsty, so the apple fills me up :-)

I have an apple for a snack! :) I wrote about my thyroid problems a while ago, I’m too lazy to go find it now – buuut! I will be writing a post either tonight or tomorrow about an update! :)

I have been a hunger monster lately, too! I’m blaming breastfeeding – but really, I don’t care what’s causing it….more food in my belly! But I do try to include more fiber – that seems to be the only thing that makes the food stick to my ribs.

Reply

cleaneatingchelsey August 11, 2011 at 9:49 am

I think breastfeeding would DEFINITELY cause you to be hungrier!

Reply

Lindsay @ Lindsay's List August 11, 2011 at 10:10 am

ditto on the nursing hunger! I stay ravenous – not complaining though!

Reply

Katie August 11, 2011 at 9:02 am

I go for eggs and protein when I am hungry. I’ll take down 6 hard boiled egg whites with a side of chicken or turkey breast. Nothing satisfies me like that.

Christina @ This Woman Cooks! August 11, 2011 at 9:03 am

This looks delicious Chelsey. You’re making me want to eat oatmeal more often.

Lauren August 11, 2011 at 9:13 am

My dad has thyroid issues and takes medication for it, so I’m always hearing about his weight going up or down because of it. I’ve been ravenous lately too! I’m curing the problem by eating hummus by the tub and peanut butter at what seems like every meal/snack. I’m okay with that though. I’m so not simple when it comes to oatmeal toppings. I like to put everything on there!

cleaneatingchelsey August 11, 2011 at 9:49 am

One of the reasons why I knew it was out of whack again is because I could tell I was gaining weight and nothing was helping! It is only like 5′ish pounds, but I can tell a difference!

I have been playing with protein powders and I’m thinking Sun Warrior is my next stop. I tried Vega after hearing all kinds of great things and then it turned out to taste awful! So far the veggie/brown rice protein has tasted like dirt and the whey protein has tasted like chemicals. Does Sun Warrior live up to all the hype?

blueberries always go on super sale for like buy 1 get 2 free at my grocery store and then I end up with 1/2 a cup of them on everything! They’re my favorite fruit topping in oatmeal :)

Lauren A. @ Newest Obsession August 11, 2011 at 9:36 am

Oh man, I have been feeling the same way lately. Whenever my appetite is out of control I always add lean protein and healthy fats. This typically does a good job of toning down the hunger monster.

Reply

Amanda @ .running with spoons. August 11, 2011 at 9:38 am

When my hunger starts going crazy, it seems like no matter what I eat, I won’t be satisfied unless I eat A LOT. Carbs, fats, protein… doesn’t seem to matter how much of whatever macro I eat. Sometimes a high protein meal will satisfy me, other times it won’t. Kind of frustrating actually… I wish my body would just make up its mind!

I try to get more fats in! Almonds, peanut butter, and eggs are my go-to sources. And also if I am more hungry than usual, I’ll have a couple of spoonfuls of peanut butter before bed so I won’t wake up starving.

Reply

Bridget August 11, 2011 at 11:03 am

That’s almost the exact same breakfast I had yesterday morning. Swap chocolate protein powder for vanilla, and I topped it with raw, slivered almonds instead of peanut butter for a little crunch.

My hunger has been wild lately too. I mean, I woke up hungry at 3 am last night and had a bowl of cereal, and when I woke up at 7 am, I was hungry again! :P

I think it’s because I didn’t have Greek yogurt as my night time snack. That stuff always keeps me nice and full throughout the night!

Reply

cleaneatingchelsey August 11, 2011 at 11:28 am

Oh I have totally done that before! Sometimes I’ll chug a glass of water in the middle of the night, but if in 10 minutes I am still hungry, back to the kitchen!

When I’m super hungry, I love making a big batch of air-popped popcorn (topped with some brumel and brown and nutritional yeast or Brady Street Cheese Sprinkle from Penzy’s spices – an awesome spice company that started locally in Brookfield, WI but has since gone national.)

A hugh jass bowl of watermelon tends to work well for this. I think the addition of water helps make me less thirsty as well.

But seriously, it must be taken to the level of HUGH JASS bowl.

Otherwise, all bets with the hunger monster are off.
